How to Forward a Live Stream to Another Platform

Forward a live stream using separate encoder outputs or a cloud relay. Compare the trade-offs, configure OBS, plan upload bandwidth and check platform rules.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To forward a live stream, either send a separate output from your encoder to each platform, or send one feed to a cloud relay and let it distribute the stream. Direct outputs give you control but require enough upload capacity and encoding resources; a relay reduces the load on your computer and can simplify sending to several destinations.

Choose how to send the stream

Simulcasting means broadcasting the same live content to more than one platform at the same time. YouTube calls it “simulstreaming” and says, “You can go live with the same content across multiple platforms at the same time.” (YouTube Help)

Route How it works Best fit Main trade-off
Local, multiple outputs Your streaming software or hardware sends an output directly to each platform. Creators who want direct control and have sufficient computer capacity and upload bandwidth. Each destination adds to the total upload target; multiple encodes can also increase local workload.
Cloud relay Your encoder sends one feed to a relay, which distributes it to connected destinations. Creators who want a simpler setup or are sending to several platforms without encoding a separate local output for each. You depend on the relay’s supported destinations, configuration and plan limits.

YouTube describes local encoding as a fit for people seeking control with a powerful computer, and cloud services as simpler, lighter on the computer, and useful for more than two channels. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee of performance for every setup. (YouTube Help)

Prepare the accounts and stream details

  • Confirm that each receiving account is active and in good standing, and check the destination’s current rules for simultaneous streaming.
  • For direct outputs, find each platform’s RTMP server URL and stream key if your encoder requires them. For a relay, connect the destination accounts and select or create the intended live events.
  • YouTube requires a verified channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first activation can take at least 24 hours after the initial request, so do not leave activation until event day. (YouTube Help)
  • Treat stream keys as credentials: keep them private, enter them only in the encoder or relay you intend to use, and replace a key if it is exposed.
  • Check the plan’s number of simultaneous destinations and any platform-specific account restrictions before building the workflow.

Forward from OBS using a cloud relay

  1. Connect destinations in the relay. Sign in to the relay, authorize the channels or accounts you want to use, and select the live events or destinations for this broadcast.
  2. Configure OBS to send one feed to the relay. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose the relay from the Service menu if it is listed, or choose a custom RTMP service and enter the server URL and stream key the relay provides.
  3. Check output and audio. Confirm the resolution, frame rate, audio source and encoder settings are appropriate for the event and that the relay accepts them.
  4. Enable the destinations. Before starting, verify that every intended output is enabled and linked to the correct live event.
  5. Start OBS and verify each destination. Start streaming, then check that video and audio appear on every platform. On YouTube, monitor the Stream health tab in Live Control Room.

Restream documents this general flow for Facebook and YouTube: connect channels, choose Restream as OBS’s streaming service or paste its key, and start streaming in OBS. Its guide also describes a browser Studio alternative when OBS is not needed. Supported platforms and plan entitlements can change, so confirm them in the service before relying on a particular destination. (Restream setup guide)

Send separate outputs directly from your encoder

  1. Add a destination for each platform. In your encoder or hardware, enter the receiving platform’s RTMP server URL and stream key for each output. If the encoder cannot run multiple outputs, you may need a supported plugin, a separate encoder, or a cloud relay instead.
  2. Set each output to a compatible profile. Use a resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate accepted by the receiving platform. A shared profile that every destination supports is often simpler than maintaining different output profiles.
  3. Calculate the combined upload target. Add the target bitrates for all simultaneous outputs; this total, not the bitrate of one output, is the relevant starting point for your upstream capacity.
  4. Test under realistic conditions. Use representative camera movement, audio and graphics, then check stability and each platform’s stream-health indicators before the real event.
  5. Start and monitor all outputs. Confirm that each destination receives the intended picture and sound, and watch for dropped frames, buffering or platform warnings during the broadcast.

Budget upload bandwidth and test before going live

YouTube Help recommends upload speed of “1.5 to 2 times” the combined target bitrate for stability. Its example adds two target streams—6 Mbps and 4 Mbps—for 10 Mbps total, then recommends 15–20 Mbps upload, particularly on a shared connection. This is YouTube’s setup guidance, not a universal measured threshold. (YouTube Help)

Run a speed test during conditions similar to the broadcast rather than relying on a best-case connection result. YouTube recommends testing with typical audio and video activity. Leave headroom for other devices and traffic on the connection; if the stream is unstable, lower the output bitrate or use a relay rather than trying to push more data through the same upload connection.

Check platform rules before simulcasting

Rules differ by destination and can change. Twitch’s Terms of Service section 11 permits simulcasting subject to conditions described by Twitch: the Twitch audience experience must not be worse than on other services; creators must not direct the Twitch community to leave for a concurrent stream elsewhere; and third-party services must not combine activity from other platforms, such as merged chat, on the Twitch stream during the simulcast. Review the current Twitch Terms of Service and Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ before streaming, and check any separate agreement that applies to your account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also review the receiving platforms’ rules for the specific content and format you plan to broadcast. A technically successful relay does not make content or cross-promotion compliant with every platform’s policies.

Relay limits and destination planning

Plan for the limits of the specific service, not a general maximum for simulcasting. Restream’s setup guide currently reports that its free plan allows two channels at once, supports Facebook profiles and YouTube, and requires Standard for Facebook Pages and Groups. These are vendor-reported entitlements and may change; confirm current details with Restream’s guide before choosing a plan.

Cloudflare Stream documents that one live input can simulcast to as many as 50 concurrent destinations, with outputs that can be enabled or disabled during a broadcast. That is a documented capability of Cloudflare Stream, not a general limit for other relays. See the Cloudflare Stream simulcasting documentation.

Troubleshoot a forwarded stream

Symptom Likely cause What to check
One platform is offline while others are live That destination’s output is disabled, the event was not selected, or its server URL or key is wrong. Check the relay’s output status or the encoder’s destination settings; confirm the correct live event and refresh credentials if needed.
Every destination buffers or drops frames The combined direct-output bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, or the shared connection is congested. Compare total output bitrate with available upload capacity, test with realistic activity, reduce bitrate, or move distribution to a relay.
The computer struggles when broadcasting directly Encoding multiple outputs is consuming too much local processing capacity. Check encoder load and reduce workload, use a single output to a cloud relay, or use a more capable encoding setup.
YouTube does not accept the live feed Live streaming may not be enabled yet, the channel may not meet the setup requirement, or the stream key or event selection may be incorrect. Confirm channel verification and live activation, select the intended event, and recheck the key and ingest details. First-time activation may take at least 24 hours.
Video is present but audio or graphics are missing The wrong audio source or scene is being sent, or the destination output differs from the preview. Test the broadcast scene and audio routing on each output before the event; verify the received stream rather than relying only on the encoder preview.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded videos rather than forwarding a camera-based live feed, StreamNeo is a different kind of cloud service: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can be off; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. For Indian creators, UPI is supported. This is for uploaded videos to YouTube, not forwarding a live camera feed or streaming to other platforms. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
