You can format an SSD from Command Prompt using Windows’ built-in format command if the SSD already has a drive letter, or DiskPart if you need to create a new partition layout. The DiskPart route can erase the selected disk’s partition layout, so identify the correct drive before running any destructive command.
Before you format: choose the right method
Formatting an existing volume and rebuilding a disk’s partition layout are different tasks. Use the volume command when the SSD already appears with a drive letter. Use DiskPart when you need to remove the existing layout and create a new partition.

| Task | Tool and target | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Format an existing volume | format followed by its verified drive letter |
Formats that volume using the file system and options you specify. |
| Create a new partition layout | DiskPart, with the SSD selected by disk number | clean removes partitions or volume formatting from the selected disk; you then create and format a partition. |
Back up files you need before formatting. Microsoft documents DiskPart for Windows 10 and Windows 11 and notes that it requires membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent privileges. Its commands act on the object currently in focus, so list and select the intended object before issuing commands: Microsoft Learn: diskpart.
Format an SSD volume that already has a drive letter
- Confirm the drive letter. Check File Explorer or Disk Management, and make sure the letter belongs to the SSD volume you intend to format.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run the format command. Replace
X:with the confirmed drive letter and change the label if desired:format X: /FS:NTFS /Q /V:Data - Wait for completion and verify the volume in File Explorer.
Microsoft’s format command supports file systems including FAT, FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, ReFS and UDF. Choose one compatible with the devices and software that will use the drive. The example uses NTFS; it is not a requirement for every SSD or use case. Microsoft documents /Q as quick format: it deletes the file table and root directory of a previously formatted volume without performing a sector-by-sector scan for bad areas. That behavior is not a secure-erasure guarantee. See Microsoft Learn: format.

Create and format a new partition with DiskPart
Use this procedure only when you intend to remove the selected SSD’s current partition or volume formatting and make a new partition. DiskPart’s clean command removes all partitions or volume formatting from the disk in focus.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator and start DiskPart:
diskpart - List disks:
list disk - Identify the SSD from the displayed details. Do not assume it is Disk 1 or copy a disk number from an example. If you need more information, select the candidate disk and inspect it before proceeding:
select disk Ndetail disk
ReplaceNwith the number you have verified. - Remove the current layout only if that is your intention:
clean - Create a primary partition:
create partition primary - Format the new partition:
format fs=ntfs quick
You can add a label, for exampleformat fs=ntfs label=Data quick. - Assign a drive letter if needed, then exit:
assignexit
Microsoft’s DiskPart example uses list disk, select disk 1, create partition primary and format fs=ntfs label=Backup quick. The example’s disk number and label are illustrative, not values to copy blindly: Microsoft Learn: diskpart.

What clean and quick format do—and do not do
cleanremoves all partitions or volume formatting from the disk with focus. Afterward, its prior layout is no longer available as before.clean allis a separate, more destructive command: Microsoft says it sets every sector on the disk to zero and deletes the data contained on it. It is not the routine quick-format step in the procedure above.- A quick format removes file-system bookkeeping, including the file table and root directory, but does not scan every sector for bad areas. Do not treat it as proof that data has been securely erased or that an SSD has been sanitized.
See Microsoft’s clean command reference for the documented distinction between clean and clean all.

You cannot format the currently running Windows volume like an ordinary data volume. To reinstall Windows, use the Windows Setup workflow instead. Microsoft’s UEFI setup guidance describes booting into Setup, opening Command Prompt with Shift+F10, and using DiskPart to identify and select the intended disk. In the cited UEFI path, the commands include clean and convert gpt before continuing installation. That partition-style step is specific to the documented setup path, not a general instruction for every data SSD; the correct layout depends on boot mode. Follow Microsoft’s Windows Setup guidance for MBR and GPT.
