To format an SD card in a Canon camera, open the camera’s menu, choose Format, select OK, and confirm. Back up anything you want to keep first: formatting erases the card’s data. Exact menu names, controls, and card-selection steps depend on the camera model.
Before you format: back up the card
Copy any photos or other files you want to keep to another device before proceeding. Canon warns that erased data cannot be retrieved; its EOS-1D Mark II N manual specifically says formatting erases all data on the card, including protected images. Selecting a format option is not a way to preserve protected photos.

How to format an SD card in a Canon camera
- Insert the SD card into the camera. If your camera has more than one card slot, check which slot contains the SD card.
- Press MENU.
- Find and select Format in the camera menu. The menu location and label can vary by model.
- If prompted, select the card you want to format.
- Select OK, then use the camera’s controls to confirm the operation.
- Wait for the format to complete. The camera returns to the menu when it is done.
Canon’s general illustrated guide uses the sequence MENU, Format, OK, and confirmation. The EOS-1D Mark II N manual adds a card-selection step. If the labels or controls do not match your camera, use the manual for your exact model rather than guessing.

Canon recommends formatting a new card in the camera and also recommends in-camera formatting for a card that has been used in another device. A card formatted elsewhere might not work properly in the camera, so use the camera’s own Format function when preparing it for use.

What “low-level format” means for your options
Some Canon models offer a low-level format option, but it is not a universal feature. The EOS-1D Mark II N manual describes low-level formatting for its Card2 SD card. Follow your model’s manual if this option appears; do not assume that every Canon camera has it or uses the same procedure.
Formatting also should not be treated as secure erasure. Canon explains that formatting changes the card’s file-management information and does not ensure that its contents are completely erased. If you need to prevent recovery of sensitive files, ordinary camera formatting is not a guarantee.

Which SD card is compatible?
Card type and capacity support depend on the camera model. Check the specifications or manual for your particular Canon camera before buying a replacement or spare card. A card listed with one camera kit is not a general compatibility recommendation for other Canon models.
