A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For a drive you want to use on both a Mac and a Windows PC, Apple’s Disk Utility guidance is to choose ExFAT for disks over 32 GB or MS-DOS (FAT) for disks 32 GB or smaller. Back up anything you need first: formatting erases the selected disk or volume.
Choose a format for sharing files between Mac and Windows
Apple lists ExFAT and MS-DOS (FAT) as Windows-compatible formats and gives this size-based guidance for formatting in Disk Utility:

| Disk size | Format in Disk Utility | Apple’s guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Over 32 GB | ExFAT | Apple recommends ExFAT for disks over 32 GB. |
| 32 GB or less | MS-DOS (FAT) | Apple recommends MS-DOS (FAT) for disks 32 GB or less. |
This is Apple’s guidance for the stated Disk Utility use case, not a universal rule for every device or manufacturer. See Apple’s file-system format descriptions.
Back up files before formatting
Formatting erases the files on the selected disk or volume. Copy anything you want to keep to a different volume before continuing. Apple’s Disk Utility instructions warn that formatting erases all files; Microsoft gives the same warning for formatting a Windows volume.

Format the drive in macOS Disk Utility
- Open Disk Utility. In the menu bar, choose View > Show All Devices. This reveals the physical device above its volumes in the sidebar.
- Select the external disk. Check its name and capacity carefully to distinguish it from your Mac’s internal storage or another attached device.
- Click Erase. Confirm that the selected device is the drive you intend to format before proceeding.
- Choose the format and scheme. In Format, select ExFAT for a disk over 32 GB or MS-DOS (FAT) for a disk 32 GB or less, following Apple’s guidance. Scheme is a separate partition-layout setting.
- Name the volume. Apple’s instructions specify a maximum name length of 11 characters.
- Click Erase, then Done. Wait for Disk Utility to finish before disconnecting the drive.
Apple’s instructions require a scheme selection but do not prescribe one universal scheme for every drive shared between Mac and Windows. Windows guidance describes GPT as appropriate for modern UEFI systems, including when supporting large drives and more than four partitions, while MBR may suit older hardware or operating systems. Those are Windows initialization considerations, not a universal cross-platform prescription. See Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance if you are choosing a scheme for a particular Windows system.
When to use Windows Disk Management
A drive successfully formatted in Disk Utility does not need to be reformatted in Windows just because you plan to use it there. Windows Disk Management is useful if you need to inspect, initialize, create, or format volumes on a Windows PC. To format an existing volume, Microsoft’s documented path is to open Disk Management, right-click the volume, choose Format, and confirm. Formatting still destroys the data on that volume.

Quick format versus normal format
Microsoft says a quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume. A normal format takes longer and, according to Microsoft’s guidance, fully erases existing data. Do not treat quick format as secure erasure or rely on either description as a guarantee about forensic recovery.
If the labels differ on your Mac
Disk Utility’s wording can vary with macOS versions. Look for the controls named Show All Devices, Erase, Format, and Scheme; use Apple’s external storage initialization instructions if you need help identifying the physical device and its volumes.
