For routine file sharing between Windows and Mac, ExFAT is a practical default—provided every device you plan to use supports it. Reformatting is not a reliable speed upgrade by itself, and it erases the drive’s contents. Back up your files, check the requirements of every target device, then choose a format for compatibility rather than assuming one filesystem is universally fastest.
Choose a format for the devices that must use the drive
Start by listing the computers and other devices that need to read or write the USB drive. Their supported formats and partition requirements matter more than a general-purpose recommendation. Apple’s Disk Utility guide for preparing a disk for Windows computers recommends MS-DOS (FAT) for disks 32 GB or less and ExFAT for disks over 32 GB. That is guidance for Disk Utility in this use case—not a universal capacity limit or a guarantee for every TV, car stereo, camera, console, or older computer.

| Use case | What the cited guidance says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Moving ordinary files between Windows and Mac | Apple’s Disk Utility guide recommends MS-DOS (FAT) for disks 32 GB or less and ExFAT for disks over 32 GB when formatting for Windows computers. Apple Support | Confirm that any additional device you plan to use supports the selected format. |
| External storage connected to iPhone | Apple requires one data partition and one of its listed file-system formats. Apple’s iPhone storage guide | Check Apple’s supported formats and partition requirements before erasing the drive. |
| Surface recovery media | Microsoft specifies FAT32 for this recovery-drive use case and recommends USB 3.0 or higher for best performance. Microsoft’s Surface recovery guide | Follow the recovery instructions; this recommendation is not a general transfer-speed benchmark. |
| External drive for Final Cut Pro, Motion, or Compressor on Mac | Apple recommends APFS for these applications. Apple Support | Do not assume this specialized recommendation is suitable for a drive that must also work with Windows or consumer devices. |
Apple’s broader Disk Utility file-system overview describes the formats available in the Mac utility. For an unspecified or older device, its manual is the best way to confirm support; there is no safe compatibility guarantee for every model.

Will reformatting make transfers faster?
There is no established universal speed winner among ExFAT, FAT32, and other formats for USB flash-drive transfers in the cited official guidance. It does not support a promised percentage improvement—or a claim that changing filesystems alone will make your transfers faster.
#1 Best Overall
- USB-C 2-in-1 storage OTG: The Lexar JumpDrive Dual Drive D40E features USB Type-A and Type-C connectors in a slim, portable form factor for easy device compatibility
- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
Performance can depend on the flash drive’s own read and write capabilities, the USB port, and the workload. A large group of small files can behave differently from a few large ones. Microsoft’s USB 3.0-or-higher recommendation applies to Surface recovery media, not to transfer rates generally. If a drive is still slow after you select a compatible format, check the drive and port instead of repeatedly reformatting it.
Back up before formatting
Formatting deletes the volume’s contents. Copy anything you need to another location and verify that the backup opens before you start. Apple and Microsoft both warn about data loss when formatting or managing volumes. Apple’s Disk Utility guide Microsoft’s Disk Management guide

- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
Format the USB drive on Windows
- Back up the files you want to keep, and confirm the backup is accessible.
- Connect the drive and verify its name and capacity so you do not select another disk by mistake.
- Use File Explorer’s format command or open Disk Management and select the intended volume. Choose a format supported by the devices that will use the drive; for routine Windows-and-Mac file exchange, ExFAT is a practical choice when no target requires something else.
- Start the format and wait for it to finish. Microsoft explains that “The Perform a quick format option will create a new file table but will not fully overwrite or erase the volume.” Microsoft Support
- Reconnect the drive if needed, copy a few representative files, eject it safely, and test it on each required device.
A quick format is faster because it creates a new file table without fully overwriting or erasing the volume. It is not a secure full overwrite.

- Back up the drive and verify the backup; erasing deletes its files.
- Open Disk Utility and identify the intended physical disk or volume carefully.
- Choose the format—and, if needed, the scheme—required by the devices that will use it. For Windows compatibility, Apple’s Disk Utility guide recommends MS-DOS (FAT) for disks 32 GB or less and ExFAT for disks over 32 GB.
- Use Disk Utility’s erase action and confirm only after checking the selected disk. Follow Apple’s Disk Utility instructions for the current interface.
- Copy a small test set, eject the drive safely, and check that the files are readable on every required device.
Do not tune FAT32 cluster size for speed
Microsoft publishes historical default FAT32 cluster sizes by partition size: 4 KB for 512 MB–8,191 MB; 8 KB for 8,192–16,383 MB; 16 KB for 16,384–32,767 MB; and 32 KB above 32,768 MB. The page also says FAT32 does not support drives smaller than 512 MB. These are reference defaults, not evidence that choosing a different cluster size will speed up USB transfers. Microsoft Support
