To force validation on an ARK: Survival Evolved dedicated server, stop the server and run SteamCMD with app_update 376030 validate. The number 376030 is the ASE dedicated-server app ID; it is not the client ID.
Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
ARK: Survival Ascended uses a different dedicated-server app. A hosting setup guide identifies that app as 2430930 (the ASA client is 2399830), so use app_update 2430930 validate only for an ASA installation that actually uses that app. App-ID mistakes are the most common reason a validation command appears to do nothing.

What SteamCMD validation actually does
SteamCMD’s validate argument tells Steam to compare the files installed for a specific app with the depot versions currently published for that app. Missing or damaged files are downloaded again, and files that differ from the depot can be replaced. Because the command is attached to app_update, it can also download an available server update.
Validation does not repair every possible ARK problem. It does not fix a bad startup argument, an incompatible mod, a corrupted save, a port or firewall problem, or a server that is pointed at the wrong installation directory. It also cannot make a server use a different Steam branch or an update that has not yet been released to that branch.
#1 Best Overall
- ARK: Survival Ascended has completely recreated and redesigned the artwork and worlds of ARK to take advantage of the latest in videogame technology, Unreal Engine 5, using high-end graphics features such as fully dynamic Global Illumination (“Lumen”), so that light bounces realistically of off surfaces and provides realistic reflections, and advanced mesh streaming (“Nanite”) of hundreds of millions of triangles for extreme detail.
- Advanced new physics systems such as dynamic water so that every creature creates waves, ripples, splashes, and bubbles as they move through fluids, and fully interactive physical foliage where every blade of grass, bush, and tree reacts to characters, explosions, projectiles, and physics objects.
- ARK: Survival Ascended includes access to all of ARK’s worlds, including Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, ARK Genesis Part 1, ARK Genesis Part 2, and more. The Island is released now, with the subsequent expansion worlds to be added at no additional cost on a regular basis.
- Thorough Quality of Life revamps in every area: redesigned User Interfaces, dynamic navigation for intelligent creature pathfinding, Wild Babies, Photo Mode, new Camera systems, new Map system, Tracking System, new Structures and Items, new Creatures, and much more.
- Cross-Platform Modding: Download & play new custom content created by players, including new maps, creatures, items, and game modes, through a dedicated new Mod-bowser directly within the game! Enjoy an endless stream of new ARK content as the creativity and talent of the community is fully unleashed for the first time ever across gaming platforms!
Always shut down the ARK process before validation. If the server is writing a save or loading a map while SteamCMD replaces files, the result can be an incomplete installation. Back up the save and configuration directories before a repair, especially on a server with an established world.
Choose the correct ARK edition and app ID
Dedicated servers are separate Steam applications. Do not copy the app ID for the game client from an old forum post into a server command.

Reported as a separate free Steam app by a hosting setup guide; treat this identification as medium-low confidence and confirm the app used by your host or installation instructions. |
If you are unsure, inspect the directory that contains the server’s Steam app manifest and compare it with the command used when the server was first installed. A validation run against a different app ID can complete successfully while leaving the real server untouched.
One-off validation with SteamCMD
Windows command line
Install or locate steamcmd.exe, stop the ARK service or batch file, and open Command Prompt or PowerShell. Replace the installation path with the directory that contains your dedicated-server files. Run the entire command as one line:
steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir "C:ARKServer" +login anonymous +app_update 376030 validate +quit
For ASA, substitute the dedicated-server app ID reported for your installation:

steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir "C:ASA_Server" +login anonymous +app_update 2430930 validate +quit
force_install_dir must point to the existing server directory, not merely the folder where SteamCMD itself is stored. If you omit it, SteamCMD can validate a different default library and leave the running server unchanged.

An interactive session is useful when you want to see each command and check the path before downloading:

app_update 376030 validatefor ASE, or the ASA dedicated-server ID used by your installation. - Wait for SteamCMD to finish downloading and validating, then enter
quit.
The console should show depot checks or downloads and finish with a successful installation status. A quick return to the prompt with no activity usually means the wrong directory, the wrong app ID, a login problem, or an installation that Steam considers current.
Shell use on a Linux host
For a Linux host running SteamCMD, the syntax is the same, with a Unix path:
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir /srv/ark +login anonymous +app_update 376030 validate +quit
Use the ASE command only when the directory contains the ASE server. Claims that ASA has a native Linux dedicated-server build are inconsistent across hosting guides; some describe running the Windows binary through a compatibility layer. Confirm your provider’s supported method before applying a Linux command to ASA.

Safe validation procedure
- Announce maintenance. Validation can download gigabytes and may keep the server offline for an unpredictable period.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the service manager, console shutdown command, or the script that normally starts it. Check Task Manager or
psto ensure the ARK server process has exited. - Back up persistent data. Copy the saved-world files and configuration files to a separate location. File validation should target program files, but a backup protects you from an accidental path error or a damaged save.
- Confirm the edition and path. Write down whether the installation is ASE or ASA and verify that the target directory is the one used by the start script.
- Run the matching SteamCMD command. Keep the
validatetoken on the sameapp_updatecommand as the correct dedicated-server app ID. - Read the completion status. Do not close the console while SteamCMD is still checking or downloading files. Record any error text.
- Start the server and test. Confirm that the expected map, saves, mods and configuration load, then check the server’s reported build from a client or the server console.
Why a server can remain on an old version after validation
Community discussions describe both ASE and ASA servers that stayed on an old build even after an administrator used validate. A December 2024 Steam discussion reports this behavior on ASA, and a 2020-era ASE discussion describes SteamCMD lag. These are user reports, not an official explanation from Valve or Wildcard, so no single cause or guaranteed fix has been established.
Work through the checks below in order. They separate an update problem from a validation problem.
1. Verify that you validated the dedicated-server app
Using 346110 validates the ASE client app, not the ASE server. Using 2399830 validates the ASA client, not the reported ASA dedicated-server app. Re-run the command with the ID that matches the server edition and the directory used by the start script.
2. Verify the installation directory
It is possible to have two ARK installations: one created by a host control panel and another created manually with SteamCMD. Compare force_install_dir with the path in the service definition or startup batch file. If the timestamps change in one folder while the server starts from another, validation succeeded technically but repaired the wrong copy.
3. Stop every process that can hold a file open
Close the game server, update wrapper, watchdog and control-panel task before retrying. A wrapper may restart the server while SteamCMD is working, causing files to be locked or immediately replaced by the older copy in a backup directory.

4. Check SteamCMD’s own state
Allow SteamCMD to update itself, then run the command again. Watch for login failures, disk-space errors, permission errors, interrupted downloads or a connection that repeatedly stalls. Run the shell with an account that can write to the server directory; otherwise SteamCMD may be unable to replace files even though it can read them.
5. Check branch and launch configuration
A server can appear old because its startup script launches a second executable, an old backup, or a non-default Steam branch. Compare the executable path, working directory and any branch parameters with the installation you just validated. Do not add a branch switch unless the server operator deliberately uses one and has confirmed that branch’s availability.
6. Separate server files from mods and saves
Mods, saved worlds and configuration files are not proof that the core server binary updated. Test the reported build with the server’s normal content, but if it fails to start, temporarily use a backed-up configuration and an empty test save to determine whether the problem is an add-on or world file rather than Steam validation.
7. Treat community workarounds as reports, not guarantees
In one community discussion, a user said that forcing validation through a server manager resolved an ASE update problem. That experience is useful as a lead, but it is not a verified universal remedy. If repeated, correct validation still leaves the server on an old build, capture the SteamCMD log, app ID, path and server version before seeking help from your host or the game’s support community.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you validate on every server start?
Community guides describe automatic validation and update scripts, but the available guidance does not establish that every start requires a file check. One hosting guide recommends validation for a first installation or when corruption is suspected rather than as a mandatory daily action. Validation on every boot can add startup time, disk activity and downloads, and it can unexpectedly apply a newly released server update before you have tested it.
A safer recurring policy is to update during a maintenance window, keep a dated backup, and validate when installing the server, after an interrupted update, after unexplained file errors, or when a build mismatch is suspected. If you automate the process, make the script stop the server first, use the same app ID and directory every time, write SteamCMD output to a log, and return a failure code that prevents the old server from starting.

PowerShell example for ASE
$steamcmd = "C:steamcmdsteamcmd.exe"
$serverDir = "C:ARKServer"
& $steamcmd +force_install_dir $serverDir +login anonymous +app_update 376030 validate +quit
if ($LASTEXITCODE -ne 0) { throw "SteamCMD validation failed with exit code $LASTEXITCODE" }
This is a template, not a requirement to validate every time. Add your service stop/start commands only after testing the sequence on a copy of the server.
Bash example for ASE
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
STEAMCMD=/opt/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh
SERVER_DIR=/srv/ark
"$STEAMCMD" +force_install_dir "$SERVER_DIR" +login anonymous +app_update 376030 validate +quit
For ASA, replace the app ID only after confirming that the installation uses the reported ASA dedicated-server app. Keep separate scripts for ASE and ASA so an operator cannot accidentally validate one edition with the other edition’s ID.
Why Steam client’s “Verify integrity” is not the same answer
The Steam desktop client’s Verify integrity of game files action is designed around a client library entry. A dedicated server is a separate app, so the client procedure is not confirmed as a substitute for SteamCMD validation. Use SteamCMD and the dedicated-server app ID for a headless server unless your hosting provider explicitly documents a supported control-panel equivalent.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes and their symptoms
| Mistake | Typical symptom | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Using the client ID | SteamCMD reports the wrong app as current, or the server files do not change. | Use ASE 376030 or the ASA dedicated-server ID associated with your installation. |
Leaving out validate |
SteamCMD checks for an update but does not force a complete file comparison. | Put validate immediately after the app update command. |
| Validating the wrong folder | The command succeeds, but the running server remains unchanged. | Match force_install_dir to the service or startup script’s working directory. |
| Running while the server is active | Locked-file errors, partial downloads or files reverting after restart. | Stop the server and watchdog before validation. |
| Assuming validation fixes saves or mods | The binary updates, but a world still fails to load. | Restore a known-good backup and test configuration, save and mods separately. |
| Starting an old copy afterward | The validated folder has new timestamps, but the reported version is unchanged. | Inspect the executable path and working directory in the launch script. |
What is and is not established about ARK validation
- The ASE dedicated-server command form is documented as
app_update 376030 validateby the ARK Official Community Wiki. - The ASE client ID
346110is distinct from the dedicated-server ID. - ASA is reported to use a separate free dedicated-server app,
2430930, while2399830is the client app; the dedicated-server ID comes from hosting documentation rather than a primary Valve or Wildcard page in the available material. - No official Valve or Wildcard statement was found that defines how often validation should run, guarantees a fix for a stuck-version report, or confirms Steam client’s Verify integrity as a dedicated-server replacement.
- No published statistic establishes a normal validation time, failure rate or required validation frequency. Duration depends on the files that must be downloaded, storage speed and the server’s connection.
