WordPress category links usually return 404 on Nginx when the request never reaches WordPress’s front controller. Put the standard try_files fallback in the active Nginx server block, confirm that PHP requests reach the correct PHP-FPM socket or upstream, then resave permalinks in WordPress. A blank PHP page is a symptom rather than a diagnosis: enable logging and use the PHP, Nginx, and WordPress logs to identify the actual failure.

What is failing: the category URL, PHP execution, or both?
A WordPress category archive is generated dynamically. The category does not normally exist as a physical directory or file on disk. When a visitor opens a pretty URL such as /category/news/, Nginx must pass that request to WordPress’s index.php. WordPress then interprets the path and builds the archive.

Nginx does not use per-directory .htaccess files. Rewrite and fallback behavior belongs in the Nginx server block (the virtual host that serves the site). If the server block checks only for files and directories, a category URL can stop at Nginx and return 404 before WordPress has a chance to handle it.
A white or blank PHP response is a different symptom. It can result from a PHP fatal error, a database failure, a plugin or theme conflict, an incompatible PHP version, an exhausted memory limit, or a broken FastCGI route. The blank output alone cannot identify which one occurred.

Use the correct Nginx fallback for WordPress
For a standard single-site installation, the important part of the active location / block is:

$uriserves a real file, such as an image, stylesheet, or JavaScript asset.$uri/serves a real directory when one exists./index.php?$argsforwards anything else to WordPress while preserving the original query string.
The third alternative is what category archives, post slugs, pages, and other pretty URLs need. Without it, Nginx treats a virtual WordPress route as a missing filesystem object.
Repair the configuration step by step
1. Confirm the active virtual host and document root
Make changes to the server block that actually answers the domain. On a shell with permission to inspect Nginx, dump the loaded configuration and locate the server block for the site:
sudo nginx -TCheck that its root directive points to the directory containing the WordPress files and that the server block declares PHP as an index file:

index index.php;A correct try_files line in an unused or disabled virtual host will not affect requests. Likewise, a correct rewrite with the wrong document root can send Nginx to a directory that does not contain the intended index.php.
2. Add the front-controller fallback
Inside the active location / block, add or correct:
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args;Do not replace the fallback with a filesystem path to a category directory. Categories are WordPress routes, not directories that need to be created manually. Keep the query-string suffix so requests that include parameters reach WordPress intact.
3. Check the PHP location and script mapping
Nginx must pass PHP requests to PHP-FPM (or to the configured FastCGI upstream), and PHP-FPM must be told which script file to execute. In the PHP location, verify all three pieces:
- The FastCGI parameter include used by the server.
- The
fastcgi_passdestination, which must match the PHP-FPM socket or upstream that is running on this host. - The
SCRIPT_FILENAMEmapping, which must resolve to the real document root plus the requested script name.
A typical mapping has the following form; retain the socket or upstream name already defined in your installation rather than copying a path from another server:

}The identifier in fastcgi_pass is installation-specific. It may refer to a Unix socket or a named upstream. A stale socket, a stopped PHP-FPM service, or a script filename that points outside the WordPress root can produce upstream errors or a blank response even when the Nginx rewrite is correct.
4. Validate and reload Nginx safely
Test the complete loaded configuration before reloading:
sudo nginx -tOnly after the test reports success should you reload Nginx:
sudo systemctl reload nginxIf the test fails, restore the last known-good configuration and correct the reported file and line. A reload is not a substitute for a successful syntax test.

5. Refresh WordPress’s permalink state
In the WordPress administration area, open Settings > Permalinks and click Save Changes. You do not have to change the selected structure. Saving refreshes WordPress’s rewrite state and is the documented first reset for permalink failures.

This action cannot repair an incorrect Nginx document root, a missing try_files fallback, or a broken PHP-FPM socket. It is useful only after requests can reach WordPress.
Diagnose a blank PHP page instead of guessing
Enable WordPress logging
Turn on WordPress debugging in wp-config.php and write errors to the WordPress log. A common configuration is:

- WordPress:
wp-content/debug.logidentifies application-level PHP errors, plugin and theme exceptions, and WordPress database messages. - Nginx: the error log shows configuration errors, permission failures, missing files, and FastCGI connection problems.
- PHP-FPM: the pool or service log can show worker crashes, fatal PHP errors, rejected connections, and resource-limit failures.
Reproduce the blank page immediately after starting a log tail, then match the timestamp across the logs. The first fatal error in the chain is usually more useful than later 502 or 500 messages that merely describe the consequence.

Isolate plugin, theme, PHP, and memory causes
Temporarily test extensions
If the logs identify a plugin or theme callback, disable that component and retry the category URL and the previously blank page. When the administration area is unavailable, deactivate the suspected extension using the site’s normal maintenance procedure or by temporarily changing its plugin directory name on the server. Restore the name after testing, then update or replace the component that caused the fatal error.
Test the active theme
A theme can break category templates or execute incompatible PHP. Switch temporarily to a bundled, known-compatible theme and retest. If the blank page disappears, inspect the original theme’s category template, custom functions, and PHP compatibility before reactivating it.
Check PHP compatibility and memory
Use the PHP version supported by the installed WordPress core, theme, and plugins. A version mismatch commonly appears in debug.log or the PHP-FPM log as a fatal error. Also check the WordPress memory limit when the log indicates exhaustion. Increasing memory without fixing an infinite loop, oversized query, or incompatible extension only postpones the failure.
Verify WordPress files
If logs refer to missing or corrupted core files, compare the installation with a clean copy of the same WordPress release and restore only verified files. Preserve wp-content and the site configuration. Do not overwrite the entire installation before taking a backup and confirming the release you need to retain.
Common fixes that do not solve the underlying problem
- Resaving permalinks repeatedly: useful for refreshing WordPress rewrite state, but ineffective when Nginx never forwards the request.
- Creating category folders: unnecessary and potentially confusing; category archives are generated by WordPress.
- Copying a PHP-FPM socket path from another server: socket names and locations depend on the installed PHP-FPM service. Use the destination configured on this host.
- Showing PHP errors to every visitor: it may expose paths, SQL details, or credentials. Log errors while keeping display disabled on a public site.
- Changing several plugins, the theme, and PHP at once: it removes the evidence needed to identify the offending component. Change one variable, reproduce the error, and record the result.
Verify the repair
- Open a category archive in a private browser window and confirm it returns the expected archive rather than a 404.
- Open a normal post and page permalink to verify that the fix is not limited to one route.
- Load the WordPress login and administration pages, which exercise PHP execution separately from public archive routing.
- Submit a harmless request with a query string and confirm it reaches WordPress without losing the parameters.
- Review Nginx, PHP-FPM, and WordPress logs after testing; a successful page with new fatal or upstream errors is not a complete repair.
- Turn off temporary debugging settings or keep them configured to log without displaying errors, according to your maintenance policy.
A practical decision order
Use this order to avoid applying an application fix to a server-routing problem:
- Routing: confirm the active server block, document root,
index index.php, and thetry_filesfallback. - PHP handoff: verify the FastCGI include, PHP-FPM socket or upstream, and
SCRIPT_FILENAME. - WordPress rewrites: save the settings at Settings > Permalinks.
- Evidence: reproduce the failure with WordPress, Nginx, and PHP-FPM logs open.
- Isolation: address the specific plugin, theme, PHP compatibility, memory, database, or file problem named by the logs.
This sequence separates a 404 caused by request routing from a blank response caused by PHP execution. It also prevents a successful permalink refresh from creating false confidence when the server is still pointing at the wrong root or PHP-FPM endpoint.
