If a CD or DVD tray is stuck, try File Explorer > This PC > right-click the optical drive > Eject. If that fails, use the drive’s physical eject button. A paper-clip release is only for drives whose manual identifies a manual-eject hole; it is not an option on every drive. If Windows does not show the drive at all, troubleshoot device recognition instead of trying to free the tray.
Try Windows’ Eject command first
- Open File Explorer and select This PC.
- Right-click the CD/DVD drive and choose Eject.
- If the drive has a physical eject button, try that normal control as well.
The File Explorer command sends an eject request to a drive that Windows recognizes. It may not work if the drive or an application is unresponsive. ASUS documents this Windows procedure in its optical-drive tray troubleshooting steps.

Check whether an app is using the disc
Close programs that may be reading the disc. If a program is writing data to it, let that operation finish before ejecting; interrupting a write can risk data loss. Microsoft documented an ejection-related data-loss bug specifically for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. That legacy report does not establish that the same bug affects Windows 10 or Windows 11. Microsoft’s report identifies the affected versions.

Use a manual release only if the drive supports it
Some tray-loading drives have a small manual-eject hole; others do not. Slot-loading optical drives may lack one entirely. Check the manual for your exact computer or drive to confirm that a hole is provided, where it is, and how to release the tray. Sony’s support instructions describe inserting a pointed object such as a paper clip into the manual-eject hole, but the device’s own manual should guide the procedure.

Release a supported tray carefully
- Shut down the computer and unplug its power if the manufacturer’s procedure calls for it. HP’s desktop instructions specify doing so before manual release.
- Identify the manual-eject hole using the device documentation. Do not mistake an activity light or another opening for the release.
- Straighten a paper clip and insert it gently until you feel resistance; press gently to release the tray. Do not force it or probe an unidentified opening.
- Once the tray opens, remove the disc without pulling or twisting the mechanism.
Hardware designs and release-hole locations vary. See Sony’s manual-eject guidance and HP’s desktop procedure, then follow the instructions for your model.
If Windows does not show the optical drive
A tray that will not open and a drive missing from Windows are different problems. If the drive is absent from File Explorer or appears with a yellow exclamation point in Device Manager, Windows may have a driver or configuration issue. Microsoft’s CD/DVD drive troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and includes these checks:

- Check whether the drive is enabled in BIOS or UEFI.
- Install the chipset drivers recommended by the computer manufacturer.
- In Device Manager, uninstall the CD/DVD device driver, then restart Windows so it can detect the device again.
- Use the registry repair steps only if appropriate. Microsoft cautions that readers unfamiliar with Registry Editor should seek help from someone who is.
These steps address Windows detecting the drive; they do not mechanically release a jammed tray.

Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media is a Windows control for removable devices, not the primary command for opening an optical-drive tray. Its icon may be absent when removable hardware is not connected or Windows does not recognize it. Use the optical drive’s Eject command in File Explorer for the tray procedure. Microsoft’s safe-removal instructions explain the separate feature.
