Text messages and other alerts have separate sound categories in Sounds & Haptics; you can also assign a different ringtone or text tone to an individual contact.
Change your default ringtone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Tap a tone to hear it and select it as your ringtone.
Apple’s current support guide is labeled for iOS 27. If your iPhone uses another iOS version and a label differs, look for the equivalent sound category under Sounds & Haptics. Apple’s guide to changing iPhone sounds and vibrations covers ringtones, text tones, and other alerts.

Choose a sound for texts and other alerts
Alert sounds are selected by category, so changing one does not automatically change every other alert.

- Tap the category you want to change, such as Text Tone, Calendar Alerts, or Reminder Alerts.
- Tap a sound to select it.
Apple lists options for text messages, new voicemail, new mail, sent mail, calendar alerts, reminder alerts, and AirDrop. Controls such as Keyboard Feedback, Lock Sound, and System Haptics are also available on supported iOS versions.

Set a ringtone or text tone for one contact
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Ringtone or Text Tone.
- Choose a sound, then save the contact changes.
This changes the sound for that contact rather than replacing the general default. Apple documents contact-specific tone assignment in its guide to using tones and ringtones with iPhone or iPad.
Adjust ringtone volume and vibration
In Settings > Sounds & Haptics, use the ringtone and alert volume slider to set the level. Apple also documents a Change with Buttons control, which determines whether the iPhone’s volume buttons can change ringtone and alert volume.

To change vibration, choose a haptic pattern for the relevant sound category. Where available, tap Create New Vibration to record a custom pattern. Control names and availability can vary with iOS version.
Separate alarm and alert volume where supported
Some current iOS versions provide separate volume groups for alarms and timers, and for alerts and system sounds. Turn off Match Ringtone Volume for the group you want to adjust independently, then set that group’s slider. If you do not see this control, your iOS version may not offer the separate groups described in Apple’s current guide.

Silence calls without changing the ringtone
If you want incoming calls silent rather than a new ringtone, use the Ring/Silent switch on iPhone models that have one. On supported models without that switch, use Control Center or configure the Action Button for the relevant ringer control. A Focus can also silence incoming calls temporarily. Apple notes that Clock alarms still play when Silent mode is on. See Apple’s instructions for selecting ringtones and controlling the ringer.

Buy a tone from the Tone Store
Where available, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtones > Tone Store to browse and buy ringtones or other tones. Purchases are associated with the Apple Account and payment method on file, and purchased tones appear near the top of the sound list. Store availability varies by country or region, and some previous purchases may not be available to download again. Check Apple’s tones and ringtones guide for details.

Create a custom ringtone in GarageBand
GarageBand for iPhone can export a ringtone from an audio file, eligible downloaded music, or a song made in GarageBand. Protected music and music that has not been downloaded cannot be used. Apple sets a maximum ringtone export length of 30 seconds; GarageBand can shorten a longer selection automatically, or you can trim it before exporting.
- Open your project in GarageBand and prepare the audio section you want to use.
- Share or export the project as a ringtone. If the selection exceeds 30 seconds, shorten it or allow GarageBand to trim it.
- After export, choose whether to use the sound as the standard ringtone or text tone, assign it to a contact, or finish without assigning it.
