To follow Dallas Cowboys roster moves, start with the team’s official roster page, then check its dated news archive for what changed. Use the depth chart only to see the order Dallas currently lists at each position: the page calls itself an “Unofficial 2026 Dallas Cowboys Depth Chart,” not a promise about starters or playing time.
Which Cowboys page should you check?
| Reader question | Best source | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Is the player listed, and in what status group? | Cowboys roster | Players grouped as Active, Reserve/Designated to Return, Reserve/Injured, or Practice Squad. |
| Who is listed first, second, or third at a position? | Cowboys depth chart | The team’s listed ordering on a page explicitly labeled unofficial. |
| What happened, and when? | Cowboys news archive | Dated team reporting and context for moves and player availability. |
| Does a league roster view show the same status? | NFL.com roster | A league-level roster presentation to use as a cross-check. |
How to check a roster move
- Find the player on the Cowboys roster page. Note the section heading, rather than treating every name on the page as having the same status.
- Open the team news archive. Look for a dated report that explains the move. A roster page is a current-state view and may not show the sequence behind a change.
- Check the wording and date. Distinguish an official announcement of a completed move from a report of an agreement or a projection. If the report describes a transaction as reported rather than completed, do not treat it as confirmation that the roster page has already changed.
- Cross-check NFL.com if useful. Compare the labels and the dates on both pages. They may not update at the same time; use the Cowboys’ own announcement for what the team has said, and the league page as a second view.
How to read the Cowboys depth chart
The depth chart is for listed positional order, not proof of a fixed lineup. A player shown first is first on that page; the listing alone does not establish that the player will start, receive a particular workload, or be available for the next game. Use the roster page for the player’s published roster category and team updates for later developments.

Keep the page’s label in view: the current page is headed “Unofficial 2026 Dallas Cowboys Depth Chart.” That qualification matters when comparing it with a roster list or a media projection, which may answer a different question.

Why a roster announcement can go stale quickly
A roster announcement records a moment, not the end of personnel changes. On August 30, 2026, Dallas reported trimming from 91 players to 53 and said the initial 53 was “just the starting point.” The team also noted that practice-squad formation and further transactions could follow. In its cutdown coverage, Dallas reported that 39 players moved off the roster, mostly through waivers. Those figures describe the Cowboys’ 2026 cutdown account; they are not universal NFL rules or season-long transaction totals.
#1 Best Overall
After the initial cutdown, keep checking dated updates. The Cowboys news archive included later reporting on October 2, 2026, about a trade and player availability. Training-camp cuts, practice-squad formation, and game-week availability can all make a previously checked snapshot obsolete.
What to compare when sources disagree
- Authority: Is it a Cowboys page or announcement, a league roster database, or a media projection?
- Timestamp: When was the page or report published or updated?
- Purpose: Is it showing roster membership and status, positional ordering, or a reported transaction?
- Status detail: Does it distinguish Active, reserve, injured, and Practice Squad groups?
- Certainty: Does the wording confirm an official move, or describe a report, agreement, or projection?
If the pages differ, note when each was checked and what each one labels. A difference may reflect timing or purpose rather than a direct contradiction. For current team-confirmed information, give priority to the Cowboys’ dated announcement; use NFL.com as a cross-check.
