For a first flight, choose a legal open site, complete the required checks for your drone and flight, and keep the aircraft in sight while you practise simple controls. This guide covers U.S. recreational flying; pilots elsewhere should check their aviation regulator, and flights for work or other non-recreational purposes must follow the applicable rules rather than the recreational exception.
Which rules apply to your flight?
In the United States, the rules depend first on why you are flying. Recreational pilots must satisfy the FAA’s exception requirements, including passing the free Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) through an approved test administrator and following the applicable community-based safety guidelines. Keep proof that you passed TRUST available. See the FAA TRUST guidance.

Flights for work or another non-recreational purpose follow a different framework. Part 107 is the common FAA framework for small unmanned aircraft operated for non-recreational purposes; do not assume a personal-use exception covers a work flight. Consult the FAA Part 107 guidance and the FAA getting-started page to identify the rules for your operation.
Check the drone’s registration and Remote ID status
For recreational operations, the FAA says drones weighing 0.55 pounds (250 grams) or less are exempt from registration. This is a weight-based rule, not a visual estimate: check the aircraft’s specifications and current FAA guidance. The FAA’s registration guidance explains the requirements.

Registration and Remote ID are linked: drones that must be registered, or are registered, must comply with Remote ID rules. If a drone does not have Remote ID equipment, the FAA says it must be flown within a FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA). Check the aircraft’s status and the FAA’s Remote ID guidance before flying.
Choose a site and check its airspace
For practice, look for a large, open area with few people and obstacles. DJI’s Flight Safety Guidelines recommend open fields away from densely populated places, buildings, and electromagnetic interference. That is manufacturer safety advice, not permission to take off from any particular property or park; local access rules may also apply.

Before travelling, check the exact launch location and intended time using FAA resources. Recreational pilots need prior authorization to fly in controlled airspace. The FAA describes authorization through LAANC or DroneZone and publishes location-specific limits on its where you can fly page. Stay within any authorization’s conditions and do not fly in restricted or prohibited areas.

- Check that the aircraft battery and controller have sufficient charge for the planned flight.
- Inspect propellers for damage and confirm they are installed correctly. Follow the model’s markings and instructions.
- Remove a gimbal protector before powering up if the model’s manual calls for it.
- Connect the controller and mobile device as directed, then power up in the manufacturer’s specified order.
- Wait for the aircraft’s startup checks. Resolve app warnings—such as compass, IMU, or vision-system alerts—rather than trying to take off through them.
- Confirm the aircraft reports that it is ready. If the model provides a home-point status, verify that it has refreshed before flight.
DJI’s Flight Safety Guidelines call for checking battery power, propeller condition and installation, link status, app warnings, and takeoff readiness. Its Mini 3 guide shows why the exact process is model-dependent: do not transfer its startup steps or propeller instructions to a different drone.
Keep the first flight simple and in sight
Keep the drone within visual line of sight and give way to crewed aircraft. FAA safety guidance also requires pilots to respect the applicable altitude ceiling and airspace restrictions. The FAA’s getting-started guidance references 400 feet as the general ceiling in uncontrolled airspace, but that is not blanket permission to fly at that height: authorization, local restrictions, and other rules still apply. For the first practice flight, use an uncomplicated site and focus on basic control, orientation, and landing. Leave room to land, avoid complex camera moves, and keep watching the aircraft rather than concentrating on the screen. A visual observer can help only where permitted and when they can communicate effectively with the pilot under the applicable rules.

Land with battery margin
Do not plan a flight around the manufacturer’s maximum-flight-time figure. For example, DJI lists maximum flight times of 38 minutes with a standard battery and 51 minutes with the optional Intelligent Flight Battery Plus for the Mini 3; DJI says those figures were measured under controlled wind-tunnel conditions. Actual flight time varies with environment, use, and firmware. The Plus battery is model-specific and changes aircraft weight. See the DJI Mini 3 specifications.

Learn your drone’s return-to-home behaviour and settings before relying on them, and follow its warnings and manual. There is no single battery percentage, return-to-home altitude, or wind limit that is safe for every camera drone; those depend on the aircraft, site, and conditions. Do not fly when conditions exceed the manufacturer’s limits.
If the app reports a problem
Stop and identify the warning before takeoff. Check the app’s explanation and the model’s manual, then follow the recommended remedy. Do not ignore a compass, IMU, vision-system, connection, or readiness warning simply because the aircraft appears able to arm. If the warning remains unresolved, postpone the flight and contact the manufacturer’s support channel if needed.
