A relay has two network legs to diagnose, not one. Check the encoder’s error and YouTube Live Control Room stream health at the time of the disconnect before changing settings.
Map the streaming path before troubleshooting
“Streaming from Linode” can describe different setups. In a direct setup, an encoder running on a Linode instance sends the stream to YouTube. In a relay setup, an encoder elsewhere sends to a Linode server, which then forwards the stream to YouTube. Akamai’s RTMP server guide documents the relay architecture; it does not mean every Linode stream uses one.

- Direct: inspect the encoder host’s connection to YouTube.
- Relay: inspect local encoder to Linode and Linode to YouTube separately, as well as the relay service itself.
Write down the encoder host, any relay, the destination URL, and which device sends the final YouTube leg. Record the exact disconnect time, encoder status or error, relay logs if applicable, and the stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room. Preserve the current configuration and change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.

Refresh the stream key if authentication is suspect
If a third-party encoder reports an error when starting, YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends copying the current stream key from Live Control Room and pasting it into the encoder. If your encoder authenticates by signing in to YouTube rather than using a key, YouTube directs you to the encoder’s software provider. Keep the key private: it is the credential the encoder uses to send your feed. If it may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder using it.

Match RTMPS settings to the actual error
For an RTMPS connection, copy the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room instead of assuming a saved RTMP URL is still right, and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting page advises verifying the URL for connection timeouts. For an “invalid SSL certificate” type error, verify the URL and, if needed, try port 443. Apply these checks to matching errors rather than changing protocol or port speculatively.
Check encoder load and sustainable upload
Measure upload capacity on the machine that sends the YouTube leg. A speed test from a separate desktop does not establish the upload capacity of a Linode VPS or another sender. Compare sustainable capacity with the configured stream bitrate and leave headroom for variation; one speed-test result cannot guarantee stability throughout a live event.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. YouTube’s encoder settings page lists recommended settings by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Consult its current table for your profile rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Check the page for the current audio, codec, and other encoder requirements too.

- Test representative motion and audio before the event.
- Watch YouTube stream health while testing.
- If health warnings or measured capacity point to an unsustainable output, reduce bitrate or resolution and retest.
YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health. Its live-stream tips also advise starting the encoder early, checking the preview, and monitoring quality through the event.

Inspect the Linode relay, if you use one
Check the relay process, destination, and logs
At the recorded disconnect time, verify that the relay process is running and inspect its logs for errors. Confirm that its push destination is YouTube’s current ingest URL and that the destination key is valid. Akamai’s RTMP guide illustrates a Linode-hosted relay forwarding to YouTube; it cannot establish the condition or configuration of your particular instance.
Check both firewall layers and outbound traffic
Inspect the operating-system firewall and any Akamai Cloud Firewall attached to the Linode or interface. Akamai documents configurable inbound and outbound rules in its Cloud Firewall documentation. Check whether egress to the configured YouTube endpoint is permitted. Do not open broad inbound ports merely because an example relay deployment uses them: inbound ports for an encoder connecting to a relay are different from the relay’s outbound connection to YouTube.

If an application service cannot be reached, Akamai’s service troubleshooting guidance recommends reviewing firewall rules and logs. Use application-specific evidence, and change a rule narrowly only when it points to a block.

Do not treat ping as an RTMP test
Ping uses ICMP, while RTMP(S) uses a different protocol. Akamai’s network troubleshooting guide explains that distinction. A successful ping does not prove the streaming session is healthy; a failed ping alone does not prove YouTube ingest is blocked. Prefer encoder or relay connection status, timestamp-correlated logs, and checks appropriate to the actual destination and protocol.

Retest one suspected fault at a time
- Save the original settings and note the disconnect time, symptoms, and stream-health status.
- If authentication errors point to the key, copy the current key from Live Control Room into the encoder; reset a compromised key and update its users.
- If connection errors point to the endpoint or protocol, correct the URL and confirm RTMPS support. Try port 443 only for the relevant SSL error described by YouTube.
- If capacity or stream-health evidence suggests the output is too demanding, reduce bitrate or resolution, keeping the stream profile and YouTube’s current encoder guidance in view.
- If relay logs or firewall evidence identifies a fault, repair the service or adjust only the implicated rule.
- Run an unlisted or private test and compare the same indicators. YouTube advises testing before an event, starting the encoder early, checking the preview, and monitoring stream quality.
Choose direct streaming or a relay deliberately
A Linode relay is not automatically a reliability fix. Direct encoder-to-YouTube streaming has fewer services and network legs to monitor. A relay can serve a deliberate distribution design, such as forwarding to multiple destinations, but adds relay software, logs, firewall rules, and a second connection to diagnose. YouTube supports direct encoder ingestion; compare the two designs based on where encoding and upload capacity are available, how much infrastructure you want to operate, and whether forwarding is actually needed.
