If YouTube is not working on your Android phone or tablet, first identify whether the app, one video, or playback in general is affected. Then update YouTube, reopen it, restart your device, and—if videos are buffering—try another connection and clear the app cache. Follow the steps below in order; the right fix depends on the symptom.
Start by identifying what is failing
Try the video again, then open a different video. Note the exact message if one appears. YouTube errors such as “An error occurred. Please try again later,” “We are experiencing problems with our servers. Please try again later,” and “Something went wrong” do not, by themselves, identify the cause.

- The app will not open or shows a playback error: start with the app update and restart steps below.
- Videos buffer or keep loading: test another connection, then clear YouTube’s cache.
- Only one video fails: retry another video and save the error wording; the available guidance does not establish one universal fix for content-specific failures.
- You cannot update YouTube: check Android compatibility and system updates.
Update YouTube from Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Manage apps & device, then Updates available.
- If YouTube appears, tap Update. Google notes that some app updates may require restarting the device. YouTube’s update instructions describe the Play Store process.
Close the app and restart your device
- Close YouTube, then open it again and retry the video.
- If it still fails, restart your Android phone or tablet and try once more.

For buffering or loading, test the connection
Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or from mobile data to Wi-Fi, then replay the video. Mobile data may incur charges. If YouTube works on one connection but not the other, note that observation; it can help when reporting the issue, but it does not prove the underlying cause.

Clear YouTube’s cache
- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps or Applications, then select YouTube.
- Open Storage and tap Clear cache.
- Reopen YouTube and test playback again.
Android menu names vary by version. YouTube specifically recommends clearing the app cache for buffering or loading problems. This is not the same as Clear data, which is a separate action and is not part of the troubleshooting steps cited here.
If YouTube will not update, check Android compatibility
An older Android operating system may no longer support a newer YouTube app. Check Android Settings for a system update and install one if available. If the app still cannot be updated, YouTube says to use m.youtube.com in your mobile browser. Older app versions may eventually stop working. YouTube’s unsupported-device guidance explains this fallback.

If the problem continues, collect details and get help
- Write down the exact error message and whether the issue affects one video or several.
- Record your Android version and YouTube app version, if available.
- Note whether playback fails on both Wi-Fi and mobile data, and whether other apps or services are affected.
- If possible, try a different supported device to see whether the problem appears tied to the device, video, or account. This comparison is a clue, not a definitive diagnosis.
You can send feedback from the YouTube app using its Android help guidance. If several apps or services are also having trouble, YouTube directs users to their device manufacturer’s support site. Open the Android troubleshooting page.
