If YouTube rejects your kirtan encoder’s stream key, first confirm that the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube stream and that its saved key matches the current key in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed or invalidated, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. If the credential and destination are correct, check the encoder, outgoing feed, computer load, and internet connection in that order.
Check the YouTube destination and saved key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live → Stream to open the stream intended for the kirtan broadcast.
- Copy that stream’s stream URL and stream key. In the encoder, verify that the server or stream URL and stream-key fields match the current values for that destination. A key is a credential that allows YouTube to accept the encoder’s feed; using a key from a different stream or an old saved value can prevent the connection. See YouTube’s stream setup instructions.
- Save the encoder configuration and try starting the stream again. Check the encoder’s own status or error message as well as YouTube’s Live Control Room.
Reset a key that may be invalid or exposed
If you suspect someone else has seen the key, or the current key no longer works, reset it in YouTube and update every encoder that uses it. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to that stream.

- In Live Control Room, open Stream and find Stream key.
- Select Reset and copy the newly generated key.
- Replace the saved key in the encoder with the new one, save the change, and reconnect.
YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. If you do not have the required channel role, ask an owner or manager to perform the reset. More detail is in YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
If the key is correct, isolate the encoder or connection
Check how the encoder connects
Some encoder software signs in directly rather than asking you to enter a stream key. If that software cannot connect, YouTube advises contacting the encoder vendor because its software may need an update to work with YouTube Live. For a key-based setup, update the encoder to its latest version, then verify that the video and audio feed is reaching it.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Inspect the feed and computer
Use the encoder’s preview and error log to see whether it is receiving the expected picture and sound. Check CPU load and, if available, a local recording or archive from the encoder. A missing or unstable local output points to the source or encoding setup rather than a YouTube key mismatch. YouTube’s troubleshooting steps are at “You get an error when starting your encoder”.
Check the outbound internet connection
If the encoder preview and local output look healthy but the stream will not reach YouTube, test the computer’s outbound connection. If the test indicates a network fault, contact your internet service provider. Avoid changing several settings at once: confirm the destination and key first, then work outward from the encoder to the network.

Use YouTube’s stream-health messages
In Live Control Room, read the errors shown beside the health indicator. YouTube classifies red errors as critical; they may stop an event from starting or cause viewer problems. Yellow errors indicate conditions that may reduce quality. Follow the specific guidance shown for the error rather than treating every warning as a key problem. See YouTube’s stream-health troubleshooting guidance.

Correct an “Incorrect stream format” error
For this specific message, YouTube’s documented format is H.264 video and AAC audio. Select those formats in the encoder, apply the change, and test the stream again. This fix addresses a format error; it is not a general remedy for a rejected key.

Prepare an always-on kirtan stream for recovery
Keep recurring stream credentials consistent
A reusable custom key can simplify a recurring broadcast, but make sure the encoder’s saved key always matches the active key in YouTube. YouTube’s Reuse settings function copies the previous stream’s key along with its other settings. If you reset the key, update the encoder before relying on the next broadcast. Do not share the key publicly or include it in screenshots or support messages.
Test before depending on the broadcast
YouTube recommends testing the live stream, checking the preview and stream quality, and confirming that viewers can access the event. Its encoder tips suggest setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder 15 minutes beforehand. Those are event-planning recommendations, not a guarantee of 24/7 uptime. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

YouTube says a channel needs to be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction within the previous 90 days to stream; enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Choose gear only if the current setup is inadequate
A stream-key error is usually a configuration problem, not a reason to buy new equipment. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders. An encoder may be useful when your workflow needs external equipment such as preamps and microphones, and YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. The appropriate choice depends on your existing workflow, audio and video equipment, monitoring needs, and reliability requirements; YouTube does not identify one option as best for every channel. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting page and encoder tips.
Common causes and fixes
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Key rejected or encoder cannot start | Wrong destination or stale key | Copy the current URL and key from the intended stream in YouTube Studio and replace the encoder’s saved values. |
| The key may have been shared or compromised | Credential security | Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. |
| Encoder signs in directly and fails to connect | Encoder compatibility or version | Update the encoder; contact its vendor if the sign-in integration still fails. |
| Preview or local recording has missing or unstable audio/video | Source feed, encoding, or computer load | Inspect the feed, encoder errors, and CPU load before troubleshooting the network. |
| Local output is healthy but YouTube receives no stream | Outbound internet | Test the connection and contact the ISP if the test indicates a network problem. |
| Live Control Room reports “Incorrect stream format” | Video or audio encoding format | Use H.264 video and AAC audio. |
| Red or yellow health message | Issue identified by YouTube | Read and address the specific Live Control Room message; red is critical, while yellow may degrade quality. |
