There is no single confirmed fix for every OBS version, operating system, and media format, so locate the failing point before changing settings.
Find where the video turns black
Compare the image at each stage: OBS preview or program output, a local recording of the stream, the Live Control Room preview, and playback on YouTube. YouTube advises checking the encoder output directly and examining a local archive when stream quality is bad (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting).

- Black in OBS: Start with the media source, selected file, and active scene.
- Normal in OBS but black in the local archive: Check the output routed to the encoder and look for encoder errors or high CPU load.
- Normal in OBS and the archive, but black on YouTube: Check the Live Control Room, stream status, and viewer playback rather than assuming the source file is at fault.
If viewers report the problem, ask whether it affects one person, several people on the same network, or people on separate networks. YouTube’s troubleshooting uses that pattern to help distinguish an individual device or connection issue, a shared network issue, and a possible encoder-side issue (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting).

1. Confirm the source and scene
- In OBS, select the scene that is actually being streamed.
- Look in the Sources list for the file source. OBS documents Media Source and VLC Video Source as source types for video or audio files (OBS media sources).
- Open the source’s properties and verify that the intended file is selected and loaded. Check that the source is visible in the active scene and is not hidden behind an opaque source.
- Play the file in an ordinary media player as a basic check that it opens. This does not prove OBS can render it, but it helps separate a file that fails everywhere from one that fails only in OBS.
If you are showing a separate player window instead of adding the file as an OBS Media Source or VLC Source, treat that as a different capture path. Reports from OBS users describe black video with captured player windows, but those reports do not establish one cause shared by all systems or versions (OBS community report: black screen while video plays in a media player; OBS community report: VLC video appears black).

2. Check whether OBS can render the source reliably
Watch the OBS preview while the file plays. Note whether audio continues when the image goes black, whether the image is black from the start, and whether the problem appears only after playback or looping. Those observations help describe the failure; they do not identify a universal codec or settings fix.
OBS cautions that complex scenes and sources use system resources. If the problem coincides with rendering or encoding overload, try simplifying the scene, reducing unnecessarily large media resolutions, or limiting resource-intensive sources (OBS guide to identifying overload issues). Resource load is one possibility to check, not proof that every black media source is caused by GPU performance.

If OBS looks right but YouTube is black
Inspect the encoder output and archive
YouTube Help says, “If your stream looks or sounds bad: There may be a problem with the quality of your audio and video sources routed to your encoder.” Check the actual output being sent to YouTube, any encoder errors, CPU load, and a local archive of the stream. If the archive is also black, focus on the path feeding the encoder; if it is healthy, investigate what happens after the output leaves OBS (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting).
Use the Live Control Room preview and a test
Before starting a public event, use an unlisted test stream when appropriate and compare the Live Control Room preview with playback on the watch page. YouTube Help instructs creators: “Before clicking Start Streaming, check the preview in the Live Control Room.” Continue monitoring audio and video during the event (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting; YouTube live streaming tips).

Separate a viewer playback problem from a stream problem
Ask affected viewers to try another device or connection, and find out whether reports come from separate networks. A single viewer’s black screen does not establish that the encoder is sending black video. Widespread reports from different networks make an encoder or stream-side issue more plausible, but check the OBS output and Live Control Room before drawing a conclusion (YouTube live streaming troubleshooting).
Use graphics acceleration advice only for the right symptom
YouTube’s advice to try another browser, turn off Chrome hardware acceleration, or update graphics drivers concerns a green-screen browser playback problem. It is adjacent guidance, not a confirmed general fix for a local OBS Media Source showing black (YouTube Help: green screen in the video player). Do not treat a driver update or acceleration change as the first answer unless the evidence points to browser or graphics rendering.

When the cause is still unclear
For a useful diagnosis, record these details before asking for help:

- OBS version and operating system.
- Exact source type: Media Source, VLC Video Source, Browser Source, or captured player window.
- Media-file format and whether audio plays.
- Whether the file is black in OBS preview, the local archive, Live Control Room preview, or only viewer playback.
- Whether one viewer, a shared network, or viewers on separate networks are affected.
- An OBS log and the steps that reproduce the issue.
Without those details, a specific codec, container, driver, or version-related cause cannot be established from the symptom alone. OBS community reports are examples of user experiences, not evidence that one fix applies to all black-video cases.
