If YouTube Live rejects an FFmpeg stream key, first copy the current stream key and matching server URL from that stream’s Live Control Room, then update FFmpeg’s output destination. A stale key, key from another stream, or incorrect URL is the first thing to rule out; codec, bitrate, RTMPS, encoder, and network problems are separate branches to check if the credentials and destination are correct.
1. Copy the current key and server URL from YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live > Stream.
- Under Stream key, copy the key shown for the stream you intend to start. Copy the corresponding Stream URL as well.
- Replace the key and server details in your FFmpeg output configuration with those current values, taking care not to add spaces, quotes, or line breaks accidentally.
- Start FFmpeg again and watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages.
YouTube’s first-line advice for third-party encoder startup errors is to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. A saved command or reused stream setup can contain an old key, or one belonging to a different stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its Manage live stream settings guidance, so keep the key private.

If the key may have been exposed or is known to be stale, reset it in Live Control Room, then update FFmpeg with the newly generated key. Do not publish the complete output URL in a forum post, screenshot, or log if it contains the key.

2. Check FFmpeg’s output URL structure
FFmpeg’s RTMP output URL combines server and stream-path components. Its documentation gives the general form rtmp://server[:port][/app][/instance][/playpath] and a generic publishing example using -f flv. The precise server and key presentation for your YouTube stream must come from Live Control Room; there is no single path concatenation that is guaranteed for every setup.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmp://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY'
This is a schematic pattern, not a ready-to-run YouTube destination. SERVER, APP, and STREAM_KEY are placeholders. Use the values shown for the actual stream in Live Control Room and follow FFmpeg’s official protocol documentation for its URL syntax.
- Check for a truncated key, an accidental space, a copied quotation mark, or a missing URL path component.
- Confirm the server URL belongs to the same stream as the key; do not rely on a server URL stored in an old command.
- Make sure the output is actually being sent to the intended YouTube ingest URL rather than an input or local file path.
3. Match the stream’s media settings to YouTube’s guidance
A valid key and destination can still carry an unsuitable feed. This is not the same as an invalid credential, so check media settings after verifying the key and URL, and use the exact error or stream-health message to decide whether this branch applies.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrates guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 frames per second; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and Rec. 709 for SDR.
H.264 bitrate reference
The following are YouTube’s published H.264 video bitrate figures; they are configuration guidance, not guaranteed acceptance thresholds for every stream. Consult YouTube’s settings page for other resolutions and codec combinations rather than inferring values.

| Resolution and frame rate | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |

| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Use a speed test to check whether your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate. YouTube also recommends testing with representative movement and audio, then monitoring stream health.
4. Use the RTMPS branch only for RTMPS errors
RTMPS is YouTube’s encrypted extension of RTMP. If your chosen endpoint or FFmpeg error mentions RTMPS, TLS, SSL, or a timeout, open the lock icon beside Stream URL in Live Control Room and copy the RTMPS server URL along with the current key.

- SSL certificate error: Verify that the destination starts with
rtmpsand that it is the correct server URL. For the SSL error covered by YouTube’s guidance, try port443where appropriate. - Connection timeout: Recheck the URL and confirm that your FFmpeg build and configuration support RTMPS.
See YouTube’s RTMPS streaming instructions for its protocol-specific guidance. Do not switch protocols just because a key is rejected: first correct a stale key and mismatched destination unless the error points to RTMPS.

- Update FFmpeg. Check whether you are using a current build and whether its output reports a protocol, muxing, or encoder error.
- Check the local feed. Confirm that video and audio look and sound right at the encoder before diagnosing YouTube’s ingest.
- Review system load. Look for CPU overload or encoding errors that could interrupt or degrade the outgoing feed.
- Check outbound connectivity. If the local feed is healthy but YouTube does not receive it reliably, test whether the internet connection can sustain the chosen bitrate and remain stable.
- Use stream-health messages. When a preview appears, follow the messages in Live Control Room and test with representative movement and sound before a real event.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance also notes that when multiple viewers report problems, the encoder may be involved. If you sign in to third-party software through a YouTube integration rather than entering a stream key, YouTube directs you to that software’s support team; it may need an update to work with YouTube Live.

6. Keep copyright and channel rules in view
Getting the stream accepted by the ingest server does not establish that the content is permitted to remain live or that the channel will qualify for monetization. Use material you have rights to stream, and check YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules for your channel and content. A successful connection and a healthy preview are technical checks, not a copyright or reused-content clearance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than troubleshoot a local FFmpeg process, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed. Each slot handles any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube only. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
