First find out what actually stopped: the playlist source, the encoder, or YouTube’s live event. In OBS, a local playlist that reaches its last file needs Loop Playlist enabled on a VLC Video source; a single-file Media Source has a separate Loop setting. Neither setting repairs an encoder crash, an unstable internet connection, an invalid stream key, or a copyright interruption. Check OBS and YouTube Live Control Room together to choose the right fix.
Identify which part of the stream stopped
At the next interruption, note the time and inspect both the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room. Determine whether YouTube ended the event, YouTube reported a stream-health or ingestion error, or OBS remained connected while only the video stopped or restarted. If multiple viewers report the same outage at once, investigate the encoder and connection before assuming the issue is on viewers’ devices.

- Only the playlist stops or restarts: check the media source, file list, and looping behavior.
- OBS reports output errors or its preview/audio is faulty: check the encoder, system load, and media routing.
- OBS looks healthy but YouTube reports an ingest problem or the event drops: investigate the outbound connection and stream configuration.
- Live Control Room or Studio shows a copyright notice or restriction: address the rights or channel issue rather than changing bitrate or cables.
A healthy encoder preview does not rule out a problem between your encoder and YouTube. Conversely, a playlist ending does not by itself show that YouTube disconnected the event.
Fix playlist playback in OBS
These steps apply to local files in OBS Studio. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the controls below; VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear.

For several local video files
- Open the OBS scene that is being sent to YouTube and check that the intended VLC Video source is in that scene.
- Open the source’s properties and verify that the correct files are listed, in the intended order, and that each file plays.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the list should start again after its final item.
- Check whether the source becomes hidden or inactive during scene changes. Test whether that visibility behavior stops or restarts playback in your setup.
- Run a test through the end of the list and into the next cycle. Confirm that picture and sound continue before relying on it for a long broadcast.
For one local video file
Use OBS’s Media Source and enable its Loop option if the file should repeat. This is a different source control from VLC’s Loop Playlist; choose based on whether you are looping one file or cycling through multiple files.

Check encoder output and upload stability
If the playlist appears correct but YouTube’s event drops, or the output itself looks or sounds wrong, use the encoder and connection checks YouTube describes in Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

- Update OBS or the encoder you use to its current release, then inspect its error messages and CPU load around the time of the interruption.
- Check that audio and video are routed from the intended sources. If available, review a local recording to see whether the fault is present before the signal reaches YouTube.
- Test outbound upload quality and stability. If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube reports ingestion trouble, focus on the outbound path and contact your ISP if testing indicates a connection problem.
- Compare the encoder’s actual codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendations for that configuration. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance recommends choosing settings reliable for the available connection, testing before the event, and watching stream health. Do not raise bitrate reflexively: a bitrate your connection cannot sustain can make delivery less reliable.
- If practical, compare Wi-Fi with wired Ethernet while keeping encoder settings the same. Treat this as a diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix; a cable will not correct a looping setting, encoder crash, bad stream key, or copyright interruption.

Verify YouTube’s stream URL and key
If the encoder says it cannot start or reports a key or startup error, check the server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s stream troubleshooting procedure and copy the current key into the encoder. If you reset the key in YouTube Studio, update the encoder with the replacement; see Manage live stream settings. Keep the key private. A key reset is a recovery step for a configuration problem, not a fix for a playlist that simply reached its last file.
Check copyright notices and live restrictions
Review Live Control Room and YouTube Studio for copyright warnings, matches, strikes, or live-stream restrictions. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content, including other live broadcasts. A detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the broadcast. See Copyright issues with live streams.

Check the rights for every item in the playlist. If the material is licensed, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A technical change such as lowering bitrate or switching to Ethernet does not resolve a rights restriction.
If the playlist is not a set of local OBS files
The steps above cover local files loaded into OBS’s VLC Video or Media Source. If “playlist” means a YouTube-hosted playlist, a feed relayed from another service, or a playlist in a different encoder, these OBS controls may not apply. Check the source service’s playback status and the current documentation for the encoder or relay you are actually using, while still using Live Control Room’s stream-health status to determine whether YouTube is receiving a stable feed.
