If YouTube buffers during busy hours, first check whether the video is actually playing through the VPS. A VPS matters only if playback runs inside its remote desktop or a proxy/VPN routes your viewing traffic through it. If you watch on your own device without either setup, the VPS is not on the playback path.
Compare the same video at the same resolution over the VPS path and an independent connection, both during peak hours and when traffic is quieter. If the buffering consistently follows the VPS path, collect measurements and ask the host to investigate shared-resource contention or routing. If it does not, focus on your device and local network.

Why does YouTube buffer during peak hours?
Video playback depends on a steady flow of data to the device playing the video. A shared VPS could be relevant if playback is running in its remote desktop, or if you deliberately route your device’s traffic through that VPS using a proxy or VPN. Otherwise, your video traffic does not pass through the server, so changing VPS settings or providers is unlikely to help.

Peak-hour buffering can reflect variable throughput, packet loss, latency, competing use of a connection, or a client-side issue. A single speed-test result may not capture conditions at the time playback stalls. YouTube also cautions that “Using multiple devices on the same network may reduce the speed that your device gets.” YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends comparing connections and reducing demand on the network.

How to diagnose YouTube buffering on a VPS

Map the playback route
Determine where the video is playing and how the traffic reaches it. If YouTube is open in a browser inside the VPS’s remote desktop, playback uses the VPS connection. If you watch locally through a proxy or VPN hosted on the VPS, the viewing traffic is routed through the server. If neither applies, test the local connection instead of changing the VPS.

Measure during peak and quieter hours
Use the same YouTube video at the same resolution for each comparison. Test during the hours when buffering usually occurs and again at a quieter time. Note whether playback pauses or changes resolution, along with sustained throughput, round-trip time (latency), and packet loss if you can measure it. Record the time and whether other devices or applications are using the connection.

Compare the VPS path with an independent connection
Repeat the playback test over the suspected VPS route and over a separate connection that does not use that VPS. Keep the video and selected resolution the same. If buffering follows the VPS route but not the alternate path, that is useful evidence for the VPS host. If it affects multiple services or devices on your normal connection too, investigate that network or device rather than assuming YouTube or the VPS is solely responsible.

Lower video quality as a test
Temporarily select a lower playback quality and see whether pauses stop. YouTube gives these approximate recommended sustained speeds:

Congestion, packet loss, or fluctuating throughput can still cause buffering even when a brief speed test exceeds the figure. If lowering quality stabilizes playback, available throughput may be a constraint; continue comparing the routes and times to locate where it occurs. Rule out the playback device and app
Restart or update the browser or YouTube app, try another supported device, and check whether browser extensions affect playback. Clear the app cache where that option is available. Reduce competing network activity while testing so it is easier to tell whether the problem is on the client or connection.

Escalate with evidence if the VPS path is implicated
Give the VPS host the test times, the affected video’s playback behavior, measured throughput, latency and packet loss, and the results from the independent connection. Ask whether shared-resource limits or a routing issue could be affecting performance at those times. Consider another provider only after the VPS path is consistently implicated; compare measured peak-hour performance and support rather than relying on a provider’s location label alone.

What the India findings about YouTube do—and do not—show
A Google-hosted technical report by Monia Ghobadi, Yuchung Cheng, Ankur Jain, and Matt Mathis, Trickle: Rate Limiting YouTube Video Streaming, describes a server-side mechanism and reports experiments using YouTube production data-center traffic in Europe and India. Its reported results—up to a 43% reduction in average TCP loss rate and up to a 28% reduction in average round-trip time—are results for that mechanism in those experiments, not expected improvements for an individual viewer on a shared VPS. They do not establish that a particular VPS host is causing your buffering or provide a VPS setting you can apply to fix it.
