To fix your site’s metadata, review each important page’s title, description, crawl and index directives, canonical URL, and any structured data; then check the rendered page after publishing. These fields help search engines interpret pages and choose how to present them, but they do not guarantee rankings or exact wording in search results.
How do I fix my site’s metadata?
Work through the checks below for each important page, starting with the page’s purpose and preferred URL. Make edits in your CMS or its metadata controls if available; if you edit HTML directly, check the output after deployment. Avoid relying on a setting’s label alone: confirm that the page actually renders the intended values.

- Choose the preferred URL. If duplicate or very similar URLs exist, decide which one should represent the page in search.
- Review the page title and description. Make them accurate, distinct, and relevant to the page.
- Check crawl and index directives. Look for accidental restrictions that would prevent a page or its preview from appearing as intended.
- Review structured data and site-name signals. Keep markup accurate and aligned with visible content.
- Publish and verify the rendered output. Confirm that the intended metadata appears and that no conflicting tags were introduced.
What metadata should every page have?
A clear, distinct title
Review the <title> element on every important page. It should accurately describe that specific page, use concise wording, and differ from titles on other pages. Replace vague labels, boilerplate repeated across the site, and keyword repetition. Keep the visible main title clear and consistent with the page topic.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe title element is not the only source Google may use for a result’s title link. Google can also draw on visible titles and headings, og:title, prominent text, links pointing to the page, and WebSite structured data. If the title seems unclear or inaccurate, Google may show different wording. As Google puts it, “Google uses a number of different sources to automatically determine the title link, but you can indicate your preferences by following our best practices for influencing title links.” See Google’s title link documentation.

A useful, page-specific description
Write a meta description that summarizes the page accurately and helps a searcher understand why it is relevant. Do not copy one generic description across unrelated pages. Google primarily creates snippets from page content and may use the meta description when it better represents the page. Its documentation gives no fixed character limit; snippets can be shortened to fit the device. The description is an input, not a promise of what will appear. See Google’s snippet documentation.
Intentional crawl and index directives
Check page-level robots directives for unintended noindex, nosnippet, or preview restrictions. A crawler needs access to a page to read directives in its HTML or response headers. For non-HTML files such as PDFs or images, an X-Robots-Tag response header can apply robots directives.

Do not treat a robots.txt block as a reliable way to remove a URL from search results: it controls crawling, not necessarily indexing. Google explains the distinction in its robots meta tag and X-Robots-Tag guidance.
A consistent canonical URL when duplicates exist
When duplicate or very similar URLs are available, use a canonical declaration to indicate the URL you prefer search engines to treat as the representative. Align internal links with that preferred URL and avoid sending conflicting canonical signals. A robots.txt rule is not a canonicalization method. See Google’s guide to consolidating duplicate URLs.

Accurate structured data where it fits
Add structured data only when it describes content that is genuinely visible on the page and relates to a search feature Google supports. Validate the markup during development and monitor it after publication. Google recommends JSON-LD when a site’s setup allows it because it is generally easier to implement and maintain. Correct markup can make a page eligible for an enhanced search appearance; it does not guarantee that the appearance will be shown. Start with Google’s structured data overview.
How do I change the title and description that show in Google?
Change the page’s title element and meta description in the CMS fields or plugin controls that produce them, or edit the page HTML if that is how the site is maintained. Then inspect the rendered page rather than assuming the editor saved the values as intended. Confirm the title and description are page-specific, that the title agrees with the visible page heading, and that duplicate or conflicting tags have not been added.

Even with correct metadata, Google chooses what to display. Title links can be drawn from several page and site signals, while snippets usually come from page content. After publishing, Google must recrawl and process changes; its title-link documentation says this can take a few days to a few weeks. A correct edit is therefore not an immediate guarantee of a changed result.

How should I set the site name?
A site name is a site-level search appearance element, distinct from an individual page’s title link. A WebSite structured data node on the homepage can express a preferred site name, but Google makes the final selection automatically and may consider homepage content, og:site_name, titles, headings, and other references. See Google’s site name documentation.

How can I verify metadata in a CMS or direct HTML?
Use the method that lets you produce accurate, page-specific output and inspect the published result. A CMS setting, plugin, or direct HTML edit can all work; the important checks are whether the right fields are accessible, whether each page gets the intended values, whether multiple controls create conflicts, and whether the output can be validated.
- Open the published page and inspect its rendered HTML for the title, description, robots directives, and canonical declaration.
- Check that the canonical URL matches the preferred URL and that internal links point consistently to it.
- For structured data, run an appropriate validator and review available Search Console reports after publishing.
- Recheck after theme, plugin, or CMS changes that may alter the page head or HTTP headers.
For implementation details, use the relevant Google documentation for title links, snippets, robots directives, canonical URLs, and structured data.
