XCOM 2 crashes on Windows are usually narrowed down by three tests: confirm the installation meets the correct edition’s requirements, launch with every mod disabled, and verify that DirectX 11 plus the Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 and 2013 runtimes are present. If a clean launch works, add mods back only after checking that each one matches both your game edition and its current version. The procedure below covers base XCOM 2 and War of the Chosen on Steam and Epic, from startup failures through save-loading crashes.
1. Identify exactly when and where the crash occurs
Before changing files, write down the edition, launcher, Windows version, and failure stage. XCOM 2 and XCOM 2: War of the Chosen have different storage requirements and mod locations, while Steam and Epic handle mods differently. A precise description prevents you from applying a fix for the wrong installation.

Classify the failure stage
- Before the launcher appears: suspect an installation dependency, graphics driver, damaged game files, or a launcher problem.
- After pressing Play but before the main menu: test dependencies and a no-mod launch first.
- Only when loading a save: compare a new game with the affected save and note whether a recent mod or edition change preceded the failure.
- Only after enabling mods: treat mod compatibility and load order as the primary variables.
Also record the exact error text, the last change you made, and whether the game reaches the menu with all modifications disabled. These details are more useful to support than a description such as “it just closes.”
2. Confirm the correct requirements and dependencies
Compare your computer with the official requirements for the edition you own. The base game’s 2K requirements list Windows 7 64-bit, 4 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11-capable graphics processor, and 45 GB of free storage. The listed installation dependencies include Steam, Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 and 2013 runtime libraries, and Microsoft DirectX.
#1 Best Overall
- XCOM ON THE RUN: Take command of the Avenger, an alien supply craft converted to XCOM’s mobile headquarters. Guide your strike force around the world, build popular support and expose the aliens’ sinister plans.
- RECRUIT RESISTANCE FIGHTERS: Five soldier classes, each with its own skill tree including new class abilities like Momentum, let you create specific soldiers for your tactical plan.
- TACTICAL GUERRILLA COMBAT: New gameplay systems offer more tactical flexibility in combat. The state of the world affects each combat mission’s environment. Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols. Loot enemies for precious gear and artifacts. Rescue VIPs and save fallen comrades by carrying them to the extraction point.
- A NEW BREED OF ENEMY: A diverse cast of enemies from powerful new alien species to the ADVENT, enforcers of the alien regime, offer a distinct tactical challenge.
- RESEARCH, DEVELOP AND UPGRADE: Configure and build rooms on the Avenger to give XCOM new capabilities on the battlefield. Use your Scientists and Engineers to research, develop and upgrade weapons and armor to fit your preferred tactics.
| Installation | Storage requirement | Other points to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Base XCOM 2 | 45 GB | Windows 7 64-bit minimum in the 2K requirements; 4 GB RAM; DirectX 11 GPU; Visual C++ 2012 and 2013 runtimes; DirectX |
| XCOM 2: War of the Chosen | 65 GB minimum; 70 GB recommended | Use the separate War of the Chosen requirements and support information rather than the base-game page |
Windows and Steam version limits
The base-game requirements page still lists Windows 7 64-bit, but Steam’s client policy has required Windows 10 or later since January 1, 2024. On a Windows 7 or 8 computer, the game may therefore be within the old publisher specification while the current Steam client is no longer supported. If you use Steam, bring Windows up to a supported version before treating the crash as an in-game fault.
Install or repair the runtimes
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows).
- Look for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 and Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 redistributables. Keep both the x86 and x64 entries when they are present; the game’s dependency list calls for the 2012 and 2013 runtime families.
- If either family is missing or appears damaged, install the matching redistributable from Microsoft, then restart Windows.
- Confirm that DirectX 11 is supported by the graphics hardware and that Windows has completed pending updates. A DirectX 12-capable card does not remove the game’s DirectX 11 requirement.
Make sure the drive has more free space than the stated requirement, not merely exactly the required number. Windows and the launcher need working space for updates and temporary files.
3. Perform a clean, no-mod launch
Disable every mod before changing individual files. This is the fastest way to separate a base installation problem from a compatibility problem.
Rank #2
- Exit XCOM 2 and close the launcher.
- Disable all subscribed, installed, or manually copied mods in the launcher or mod manager. Do not leave a single “utility” mod active for this test.
- Start the game and reach the main menu. If possible, begin a new game rather than loading a modded save.
- Repeat the test after a full restart of Windows if the first attempt still fails; this removes a stuck launcher or runtime process from the test.
If the unmodified game reaches the menu, the core installation and dependencies are less likely to be the immediate cause. Re-enable modifications only after recording which set was active during the crash. If the clean launch also fails, leave mods disabled and continue with the requirements, runtime, and installation checks below.
4. Match every mod to the right edition and version
Base game versus War of the Chosen
Do not assume that a mod built for base XCOM 2 works in War of the Chosen, or the reverse. Keep separate lists for the two editions and install a mod only where its author identifies that edition. Feral Interactive warns that “Enabling incompatible mods may cause the game to crash.”
2K’s guidance for a “Game Failed to Start” message is equally direct: “one of the first steps is to make sure your mod version matches your game version.” A game update can make an older mod incompatible even when that mod worked previously.
Rank #3
Reintroduce mods in small groups
- With the clean launch confirmed, enable one mod or a small, known-compatible group.
- Start the game and test the menu, a new game, and—when relevant—the save that previously failed.
- If the crash returns, disable the last group and test its members one at a time.
- Remove or update the mod that reproduces the failure. Keep a written list of the working set so a later update can be traced.
This approach identifies a reproducible conflict instead of guessing from a long load order. It also distinguishes a mod that prevents startup from one that only breaks a particular save.

Steam and Epic installations are not interchangeable. 2K notes that Steam mods generally need Epic-specific changes before they can be used with the Epic version. Copying a Steam mod unchanged into an Epic installation can therefore create a startup crash even when the same mod is stable on Steam.
Epic locations documented by 2K
For Epic installations, 2K documents separate folders under the game installation for each edition:
Rank #4
- Global Threat: Lead your squad in fierce battles to defeat the alien threat, and rescue civilians in crowded cities and desolate outlands around the world.
- Base game:
XComGameMods - War of the Chosen:
XCom2-WarOfTheChosenXComGameMods
Use the folder that belongs to your installed edition. Do not place War of the Chosen files in the base-game folder, and do not mix files from a Steam workshop package with an Epic copy unless the mod documentation explicitly provides the required Epic version or changes.
Clean out a suspect manual installation
- Exit the game and launcher.
- Move the suspected mod folder or package to a temporary location outside the game directory; do not delete it until the test is complete.
- Launch with the remaining mods disabled.
- If the crash disappears, restore compatible mods one at a time and leave the suspect package out until its edition and version are confirmed.
6. Repair the installation after the clean test
If XCOM 2 crashes with no mods and the requirements are satisfied, use your launcher’s built-in file verification or repair command for the installed game. Let it finish without launching the game simultaneously, then restart Windows and test again. A repair can replace a damaged or incomplete game file without changing your save files, but keep backups of important saves before making broad changes.

Check for an edition mismatch
Confirm that the shortcut, launcher entry, and installed files all refer to the same edition. A shortcut aimed at base XCOM 2 while the launcher is starting War of the Chosen can load the wrong executable or mod directory. Remove obsolete shortcuts and start from the current Steam or Epic library entry while troubleshooting.

Keep graphics software consistent
Install the latest stable graphics driver offered for your GPU by its manufacturer, then restart Windows. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, use the manufacturer’s rollback option and retest; record which driver version was active when the crash occurred. This is especially important when the game fails before the menu, when no mod is involved.
7. Separate startup crashes from save or campaign crashes
A new game and an existing save exercise different data. If a new campaign works but one save crashes, the save may depend on a mod that is now disabled, changed version, or belongs to another edition. Re-enable only the exact compatible set used by that save, then test again. Do not overwrite the only copy of the affected save while diagnosing it.
If both new games and existing saves crash at the same point with no mods, return to the dependency and installation checks. If only one modded campaign fails, preserve the clean configuration and document the mod list before seeking support.

8. Decide what to do from the symptom
| Observed result | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Clean launch works; crash returns with mods | Check each mod’s edition and version, then re-enable in small groups |
| Steam version fails after a Windows upgrade or client change | Confirm Windows 10 or later and run the launcher’s file-repair check |
| Epic version crashes after copying workshop files | Remove the copied package and use the Epic-specific mod location and files |
| Crash occurs before the menu with no mods | Check DirectX 11 support, Visual C++ 2012/2013 runtimes, graphics driver, free space, and repaired files |
| Only one save crashes | Compare that save’s required mod set with the current edition and versions; test a new campaign |
9. Prepare a support-quality report
Do not send only a screenshot of the desktop. Feral Interactive’s manual identifies the game’s Support tab as the place to obtain XCOM 2 Report.txt and crash logs.
- Open the game’s Support tab and save
XCOM 2 Report.txt. - Collect every crash log offered there and keep the original filenames.
- State whether you own base XCOM 2 or War of the Chosen, and whether the installation is Steam or Epic.
- Include your Windows version, graphics hardware, exact error text, and the point at which the crash occurs.
- Report whether a clean no-mod launch reaches the menu, which mods were active in the failing test, and the last change made before the problem began.
For Steam installations, use the XCOM 2 technical-support path; War of the Chosen has a separate Steam support page because its requirements and storage figures differ. Attach the report and logs rather than pasting incomplete excerpts, and remove personal information from filenames or screenshots before sharing them publicly.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and includes an app-crash log; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a free trial by category of at least two days, and then requires a subscription. Results vary, and no tool repairs every game crash.
