The NBA 2K21 “green glitch” describes two different problems: the Excellent Release animation is missing, or an online player is removed immediately after making a green shot. The first is usually a feedback or controller-visual setting; the second was tied to divergent gameplay settings and was addressed in update 1.03. Turn Shot Feedback on, verify your input and meter configuration, update every participant to the same game version, then use the normal console restart, network, cache, and reinstall steps if the symptom remains.
What the NBA 2K21 green glitch actually means
“Green” is NBA 2K21’s shorthand for an Excellent Release: you hit the timing or aiming target precisely and the game confirms it with a green-light visual effect. The phrase green glitch is not one single defect. Players use it for two visibly different symptoms:

- Missing green animation: the shot goes in, but you and possibly your opponent do not see the Excellent Release effect.
- Removal after a green: an online player is kicked or disconnected immediately after making a green shot.
Those symptoms require different checks. A hidden animation is normally controlled by feedback and visual-effect settings. An online removal can be caused by incompatible settings between participants or by a version mismatch. Treating both as a bad controller, HDMI cable, or graphics card leads to unnecessary purchases and does not address the documented causes.

Identify your symptom before changing settings
Write down what happens in one test game. Record whether the shot still registers as Excellent, whether the problem occurs offline or only online, whether you use the shot button or Pro Stick aiming, and whether the shot meter is displayed. Also note your platform and the game update shown on the title screen. This short record prevents you from changing several variables at once.

Fix a missing green-release animation
1. Turn Shot Feedback on
- Open NBA 2K21’s in-game Settings or Options menu.
- Open the controller or gameplay settings area and find Shot Feedback.
- Set Shot Feedback to ON, apply the change, and run a controlled shot test.
Update 1.02 explicitly changed the behavior: when Shot Feedback is OFF, players and opponents no longer see Excellent Release (green-light) animations. The shot can still be timed correctly even when the visual confirmation is hidden, so a successful basket without the animation does not by itself prove that shooting is broken.
2. Check the green-release visual effect
NBA 2K21’s gameplay director Mike Wang explained that Controller Settings can customize the visual effect, randomize it, or turn it off. Open Controller Settings and make sure the effect has not been deliberately disabled. If it is set to a random option, the appearance may vary from shot to shot; choose a consistent enabled effect while troubleshooting so you can tell whether the game is responding.

3. Match the test to your input method
NBA 2K21 supports two fundamentally different shooting approaches:

- Pro Stick Shot Aiming: use the right stick to aim the shot, then follow the game’s aiming and timing behavior.
Before testing, decide which method you are using and avoid moving the stick if you are trying to diagnose button timing. A player expecting a timing-based green while the game is set to Pro Stick aiming can interpret the different feedback as a glitch.

4. Verify the shot-meter state separately
The shot meter is not the same setting as Pro Stick aiming. Update 1.02 enabled Pro Stick Shot Aiming with the Shot Meter turned off, so an invisible meter does not mean aiming is unavailable. If you want visual timing assistance, turn the meter on; if you intentionally aim with the Pro Stick and prefer no meter, leave it off and judge the center-aim result and release feedback instead.
Update 1.03 also states that Excellent Release jumper animations play with green center-aimed shots on the Pro Stick. After updating, test a center-aimed Pro Stick shot in an offline mode. This isolates the visual behavior from online latency and from another player’s settings.

Fix a kick or disconnect immediately after a green shot
1. Bring the game to update 1.03 or later
Update 1.03 recorded a fix for an issue that removed players from online matches when they greened shots because settings diverged. Fully close the game, let the console or PC install any available NBA 2K21 update, and relaunch it. Do not rely on one player having the patch: every participant in the match must be on the same current version available for that platform.

Have all players use compatible gameplay and controller configurations while testing. In particular, avoid joining a match while one participant has changed Pro Stick, meter, or feedback behavior and another is still using an older configuration. The documented bug involved divergent settings, so consistency is more useful than repeatedly changing a single controller.

3. Separate an online-only failure from a general crash
Play a short offline game after updating. If offline play is stable but the kick occurs online, proceed to the network checks below. If the game crashes or loses input offline too, treat it as a local installation, cache, storage, or hardware problem rather than an online green-shot removal issue.

2K’s support guidance uses a general recovery path for persistent game symptoms. It is not a guaranteed NBA 2K21-specific cure, but it is the appropriate escalation after settings and patch checks.
- Quit completely: exit NBA 2K21 rather than leaving it suspended or in a quick-resume state. Restart the console or PC, then launch the game again.
- Check the game update: use your platform’s system update screen to confirm NBA 2K21 is current. Also install any pending console or operating-system update.
- Test the network for online-only problems: run the platform’s built-in connection test, confirm that other online services work, and retry after a stable connection is available. A network test cannot restore a missing offline animation, so do not use it as the first fix for Shot Feedback.
- Repair cache or storage data when corruption is suspected: use the platform’s documented cache-clear or storage-rebuild procedure. Follow the platform’s warnings carefully and avoid deleting saved data unless the support instructions specifically require it.
- Reinstall as a last local step: remove and reinstall NBA 2K21 if updates repeatedly fail, files are reported as corrupted, or the game crashes in both offline and online modes. Back up or synchronize saves according to your platform’s normal procedure before uninstalling.
Platform, generation, and controller considerations
NBA 2K21’s menus and update delivery differ between console generations, PC installations, and storefronts. The documented fixes establish the settings and patch behavior, not a universal controller or hardware cure. A replacement controller, display cable, television, or graphics card is not supported by these findings as a reliable solution.

On a console, use the exact update and cache tools supplied by that console maker. On Windows, verify that the game launcher has completed its file update and that the controller is recognized before changing gameplay options. If only one physical controller fails while another works with identical settings, test the second controller and inspect the first for stick drift or a stuck button; that is a hardware-isolation step, not evidence that the green glitch itself requires new hardware.
A practical decision tree
- No green visual, but the shot is made: enable Shot Feedback, enable a consistent green-release visual effect, then retest offline.
- No meter while using Pro Stick: remember that aiming with the meter off is supported; test a center-aimed shot after confirming the game is updated.
- Green shot causes an online removal: update to at least 1.03, have every participant use the same current version, align settings, restart, and test the connection.
- Crashes or corruption appear in every mode: complete the restart and update sequence, then use cache/storage repair or reinstall.
- Only one controller produces wrong input: compare with another controller before assuming the game has a universal green-release defect.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
NBA 2K21’s own update notes document the Shot Feedback behavior in 1.02 and the online-removal and Pro Stick animation changes in 1.03. Mike Wang’s explanation confirms that players can customize, randomize, or disable the visual effect. No authoritative prevalence rate, success percentage, or controlled test establishes how often the green glitch occurs, and there is no documented fix that promises every case will disappear. If the settings, updates, and recovery procedure do not change the symptom, preserve your notes about the mode, input method, platform, and exact timing when contacting 2K Support.
