Identify what is actually going wrong
“Poor performance” can describe several different faults. Record the symptom before changing settings, because each pattern points to a different cause and a different level of risk.

Run one controlled comparison on battery and another on AC power. Write down the active Armoury Crate operating mode, whether a Default Game Profile is applied, and whether a Windows, BIOS, driver or Armoury Crate update happened immediately before the fault.

Why the Ally X20 can stutter or crash
Power and frame-pacing limits
The Ally X20 balances a small battery, a shared thermal envelope and a high-refresh display. A game can therefore show a high burst frame rate followed by uneven frame times when the selected power mode or frame cap is too aggressive for sustained operation. Xbox PC titles with a Default Game Profile receive per-game thermal design power (TDP) and FPS limits through ASUS software. Clint Woon, Principal Product Manager for Team Xbox, describes the purpose as balancing performance and battery life “beyond what titles can achieve via in-game settings alone.”
Shader compilation
Games must compile shaders into a GPU-specific format. Just-in-time compilation can cause a hitch when a new effect appears, especially on the first launch after installing a game or changing a driver. A short pause limited to the first run is not the same symptom as a crash in every title or a slowdown that grows as the device heats.
Heat and airflow
High internal temperature can reduce system performance. A blocked intake, a dock that restricts ventilation, unusual fan behavior or sustained maximum power can turn an initially smooth session into a progressively slower one.

AMD frame generation, overlays and real-time monitoring hook into rendering and presentation. They can expose a compatibility problem even when the game itself is stable. A driver update can also invalidate shader data or introduce a regression, making the timing of the change valuable evidence.
Use this troubleshooting sequence
Proceed in order. Each step is reversible or preserves more evidence than the next one.

1. Record the trigger and scope
Note the game, location in the game, battery or AC state, Armoury Crate mode, frame cap, temperature trend and exact error behavior. Test a second title. A single-game failure calls for game or profile checks; failures across all titles justify platform-level troubleshooting.

2. Remove external variables
Shut down the game and disconnect docks, external displays, USB devices, external storage, memory cards and adapters. Retest on the built-in screen with only the normal charger. If the fault disappears, reconnect one item at a time until the trigger is identified.

3. Update the platform through official support channels
Install current BIOS, Windows packages and ASUS/AMD drivers from the Ally X20 support path. ASUS states that regularly updating BIOS, Windows and drivers can enhance system stability and performance. Restart after each major update rather than stacking several pending restarts.
Record the installed versions and update dates before testing. This makes a later rollback precise instead of forcing you to guess which change mattered.

4. Check temperatures and hardware health
Keep vents clear and observe fan behavior during a repeatable workload. Use MyASUS system diagnosis when available. If performance declines as temperature rises, first improve airflow and use a sustainable Armoury Crate mode; do not compensate by repeatedly raising clocks or power limits.
If the system is frozen, ASUS documents holding the power button until the power light turns off, then restarting. Use that only when normal shutdown is impossible, because unsaved data can be lost.

5. Roll back the change that introduced the fault
If the problem began immediately after a driver, Windows, application or Armoury Crate update, reverse that specific change before attempting a full reset. For a display-driver rollback, open Device Manager > Display adapters > [your AMD display adapter] > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver. If the button is unavailable, uninstall the recent software change through the relevant Windows or application settings and reinstall the last known-good package from official support.
Rollback is the right choice when event timing is strong and the fault affects multiple games. Keep the new version available for later testing; a rollback is a diagnostic step, not proof that every newer driver is unsuitable.

6. Stabilize power and frame pacing
For Xbox PC Store games, open Armoury Crate Command Center and check whether a Default Game Profile is active. Profiles set per-game TDP and FPS limits through Xbox services and ASUS software. Microsoft says its test teams used hundreds of games and targeted stable performance above a 30 FPS minimum. The launch set contained 40 games, and Microsoft reported more than two dozen additions in May 2026.

If a game has no profile, select a fixed FPS cap and a power mode the device can sustain instead of pursuing the highest short burst. Change one setting at a time and replay the same scene, so you can attribute any improvement.

7. Separate shader stutter from instability
Allow a supported game to complete its first-run work, then compare a second launch. Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery supplies precompiled shader data for supported Xbox PC titles and refreshes the cache when a driver update invalidates it. The Microsoft DirectX team reported launch-time reductions of up to 85% in Avowed under its measured conditions.
Unsupported games may still compile shaders locally. A brief first-launch hitch that diminishes afterward is expected behavior; repeated hitches, crashes or progressive slowdown require the other checks in this guide.

8. Test graphics memory and frame-generation features
When a game crashes at launch or reports a graphics-memory problem, open Armoury Crate’s GPU Settings, choose Auto or 8 GB, apply the change and restart the Ally X20. Test the same title before changing another variable.
If Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) or AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) controls are missing, ASUS recommends running AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition once. ASUS specifies driver V32.0.12011.7001 or newer for AFMF support with third-party monitoring tools. For diagnosis, turn AFMF, overlays and real-time monitoring off temporarily; re-enable them individually only after the game is stable.

9. Restore, reset or escalate
Use a Windows restore point from before the failure when updates and reversible settings did not help. Back up personal files before a full reset. ASUS’s escalation order is restore point, reset to the original configuration, then ASUS customer service if the issue remains. Keep your model number (RC74XA), software versions, crash timing and the tests already completed for support.
Run a repeatable comparison instead of guessing
Use the same save point or opening sequence for each test. First launch the title with the current settings, then close it normally and repeat the scene. Record whether the hitch occurs once, at the same visual effect every time, or increasingly often as the session continues. Repeat the comparison once on battery and once on AC power, without changing the Armoury Crate mode between runs.

Change only one variable per run: a frame cap, power mode, profile state, GPU-memory setting, AFMF state or overlay. Give the game enough time to reproduce the problem, and write down the result. This prevents a common troubleshooting failure in which a driver update, reset of the shader cache and frame-generation change happen together, leaving no way to identify the effective fix.

VRAM allocation: Auto or 8 GB?
The Ally X20’s Armoury Crate GPU Settings offers two documented choices: Auto and 8 GB. Auto lets the platform manage the allocation; 8 GB reserves a larger graphics-memory pool and requires a restart. Use 8 GB when a particular game reports insufficient graphics memory or repeatedly crashes at launch, then retest the same scene. Use Auto when the title is stable and you need the operating system to retain more flexible system-memory capacity.

VRAM allocation is not a universal performance upgrade. A crash caused by a driver, overlay, shader cache or overheating will not be cured merely by selecting 8 GB. Change the setting only after recording the original value, and revert it if other applications or games become less stable.
Understanding AFMF, RSR and monitoring conflicts
AFMF generates intermediate frames; it does not increase the game’s underlying rendered frame rate. That extra processing can make an unstable baseline harder to diagnose. Disable AFMF while investigating crashes or severe hitching, confirm a stable native render, then test AFMF again.
RSR, overlays and monitoring utilities can also compete for presentation control. If their controls are unavailable, launch AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition once as ASUS advises. Third-party monitoring support for AFMF requires driver V32.0.12011.7001 or newer. Do not change the driver, GPU memory and frame-generation state simultaneously; otherwise you cannot identify which interaction caused the result.
Common pitfalls that make diagnosis harder
- Comparing battery and AC results while also changing the power profile; power state must be the only difference.
- Assuming every first-launch hitch is a failing GPU when it may be shader compilation.
- Raising the FPS target after a short burst looks good, then overlooking the later heat-related slowdown.
- Leaving a dock, display, memory card or USB device attached during every test, which hides whether an accessory is involved.
- Changing VRAM allocation, AFMF, overlays and drivers in one session, so the successful change cannot be identified.
- Resetting Windows before recording versions, crash times and the update that preceded the fault; this destroys useful evidence.
Preventing repeat problems
- Keep a short change log with BIOS, Windows, AMD-driver and Armoury Crate versions and dates.
- Retest a known game after major updates before changing several graphics options.
- Keep vents unobstructed, especially when using a dock or external display.
- Use a repeatable scene and the same battery/AC condition when comparing settings.
- Prefer a stable frame cap over an uncapped burst that later throttles.
- Leave restore points enabled before major driver or Windows changes.
- When a game receives a profile update, verify whether its TDP and FPS behavior changed before blaming the new game build.
When to contact ASUS
Contact ASUS after you have documented the model, symptom, trigger, software versions, temperature behavior, accessory-free test and rollback result. Escalation is especially appropriate when crashes occur in multiple games after a clean update/rollback cycle, when MyASUS reports a hardware fault, when the display remains black outside games, or when freezes require repeated forced shutdowns. ASUS provides product registration and a technical-support workflow for the RC74XA, and lists security-update support through 31 December 2030.
