Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not have a separately documented microphone-mute button. To stop microphone activity completely, slide the power switch on the left inner arm fully to the left and turn the glasses off. The notification LED blinks red during shutdown.
If you want to keep the glasses powered, use the Meta AI app to turn off Voice and Hey Meta. Those settings reduce voice activation, but they are not described as a physical microphone disconnect. The outward-facing capture LED is the main signal that a photo or video may be recording; the inward notification LED has several meanings, including audio processing.

Is there a microphone-mute switch on Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
No separately documented microphone-mute switch is provided in the Ray-Ban Meta controls or privacy guidance. The only documented way to stop microphone activity completely is to power the glasses off.
Slide the power switch on the left inner arm, close to the hinge, fully to the left. The notification LED blinks red as the glasses shut down. Once powered off, the glasses cannot perform voice activation, process spoken commands or record video.

You can leave the glasses powered and disable voice features in the Meta AI app, but that is a software reduction in listening and activation. It should not be treated as proof that the microphone has been electrically disconnected.
How to stop the microphone from listening
Option 1: Power the glasses off for a complete stop
- Remove the glasses or open the left temple enough to see the inner arm.
- Locate the power switch near the left hinge.
- Slide the switch fully to the left.
- Wait for the notification LED to blink red, confirming the shutdown sequence.
Powering down is the appropriate choice for a meeting, consultation or other situation in which you need the microphone and voice features inactive rather than merely less likely to respond.
Option 2: Turn off Voice and Hey Meta in the Meta AI app
- Open the Meta AI mobile app.
- Open Settings.
- Select Glasses & privacy. In some app versions, you first select your glasses and then choose Glasses & privacy.
- Open Your glasses.
- Turn off the Voice and Hey Meta preferences.
Menu names can differ by app version or region. These controls stop or reduce voice activation through the software, while the glasses remain powered for functions such as camera use, audio playback or calls.

Hey Meta preferences include an option to let the glasses respond to another request without hearing “Hey Meta” again. Turn that option off if you do not want the microphone to remain active for a follow-up request after an initial command.
When the option is enabled, the microphone remains on briefly after each request. If you do not make another request, follow-up listening ends automatically after a few seconds. The setting changes the listening window; it does not provide a hardware mute.

Do not mistake Microphone adjustment for mute
Under Your glasses > Microphone troubleshooting, the Microphone adjustment toggle is a troubleshooting control for call or voice quality. It is not a privacy mute and does not document a complete microphone disconnect.
What the lights mean when the glasses are recording
Ray-Ban Meta glasses use two different indicators. The outward-facing capture LED is intended to notify people in front of you that the camera may be recording. The inward-facing notification LED is visible to the wearer and reports several states, including voice activation and audio processing.

- For a photo, the capture LED blinks briefly.
- For video, it continues blinking while video capture is active.
- Meta describes this LED as a privacy signal that activates when you take a photo or video.
This is the primary indication for nearby people. A blinking capture light means the camera may be recording; it is not a signal that the microphone alone is active.
Inward-facing notification LED
- During video capture, Ray-Ban says both the notification LED and capture LED are solid white.
- For a photo, both LEDs blink white once.
- The notification LED can also pulse or blink when voice activation or audio processing is occurring.
Because the notification LED has multiple jobs, it is not by itself proof that the camera is recording. A white notification light can indicate audio processing even when no photo or video is being captured.
Audio processing is separate from camera recording
Ray-Ban’s official FAQ describes the notification LED as showing when the glasses are processing your audio. That state is separate from camera recording. If you see an inward-facing light without the outward capture indication, do not assume a video is being saved; check which feature you activated and whether the capture control is running.

How to check whether a photo or video is being captured
Use the outward capture light as the main check
Look for the front-facing capture LED. A brief blink corresponds to a photo, while a continuing blink corresponds to video. The signal is designed so people around you have an external indication that the camera may be recording.
The light does not indicate that every nearby person has noticed it, nor does it indicate audio-only activity. Treat it as the camera-status signal, not a universal microphone-status light.
Check the capture button and recording duration
Press and hold the capture button to start recording video. Press the button again to stop. The default video length is 30 seconds. In the app, the recording limit can be extended to 60 seconds or 3 minutes.
If you are unsure whether a clip is still running, look for the continuing capture indication and use the capture button to stop it. Changing the maximum clip length does not change the LED behavior or create a microphone mute.
Privacy controls compared
| Action | Microphone shutoff | Camera availability | What others can observe | LED interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Power glasses off | Complete documented stop | Unavailable while off | No active capture signal | Red blink during shutdown |
| Turn off Voice and Hey Meta | Reduces voice activation; not documented as a hardware disconnect | Remains available | Capture LED still appears during photos or video | Notification LED can still report other states |
| Disable “respond without Hey Meta” | Ends the extended follow-up listening behavior | Remains available | Capture behavior is unchanged | Audio-processing indications may still occur during permitted actions |
| Change Microphone adjustment | No mute; troubleshooting only | Remains available | Capture behavior is unchanged | Does not establish recording status |
Can people tell when Ray-Ban Meta glasses are recording?
The outward-facing capture LED is the designed notification. Meta says it activates for a photo and stays active while video is recording; Ray-Ban describes a brief blink for a photo and continuing blinking for video. This is the signal people in front of the wearer should use to identify possible camera capture.

The inward notification LED is not a substitute for that external signal. It is intended for the wearer and can also indicate voice activation or audio processing. Therefore, a person who sees only the inward light cannot reliably conclude that a camera recording is in progress.
Camera capture and microphone activity are different states. Voice processing can occur without a camera recording, and the camera can be used while voice controls are disabled. If privacy requires both functions to stop, power the glasses off rather than relying on either LED.

With the follow-up response option enabled, the microphone remains on briefly after a request so you can speak again without repeating “Hey Meta.” If no additional request is made, the glasses automatically stop that follow-up listening after a few seconds.
To avoid this listening window, open the Meta AI app and turn off the option to respond without saying “Hey Meta.” For the strongest assurance that no microphone processing is taking place, use the physical power switch and shut the glasses down.

Meta’s privacy guidance says the camera is blocked if the capture LED is covered. In other words, disabling or obstructing the light also disables camera capture rather than creating a stealth-recording mode.

Do not tape over, modify or otherwise disable the capture LED. Doing so prevents the camera from functioning and defeats the status signal intended for people nearby. Use the normal power switch and app settings instead.
Troubleshooting the privacy settings
The app does not show the exact menu names
Meta notes that the path can vary. Try Settings > Glasses & privacy > Your glasses. If that entry is absent, select the connected glasses first and then open Glasses & privacy. Look for the Voice, Hey Meta and follow-up response preferences.
You still see a notification light after turning off Voice
The notification LED has more than one purpose. It can indicate audio processing and other states, so seeing it does not necessarily mean the camera is recording or that Hey Meta is enabled. Check the outward capture LED and the capture-button state separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou need the camera but not voice activation
Leave the glasses powered, turn off Voice and Hey Meta, and disable the follow-up response option. Camera controls remain available, and the outward capture LED continues to signal photo or video activity.
You need no microphone or camera activity at all
Slide the power switch fully left and confirm the red shutdown blink. App preferences alone are not the documented complete shutoff.
Quick Recap
A practical privacy checklist
- For a complete stop, power the glasses off at the left-arm switch.
- For reduced voice activation while powered, disable Voice and Hey Meta in Meta AI.
- Turn off responses without repeating “Hey Meta” to remove the follow-up listening window.
- Use the outward capture LED to check for photo or video activity.
- Remember that the inward notification LED also reports audio processing.
- Do not treat Microphone adjustment as a mute.
- Do not cover, tape over or modify the capture LED; Meta says the camera is blocked when that light is covered.
