Fix WP-Cron by checking Tools → Site Health → Status, running wp cron test from your WordPress directory, and checking wp-config.php for cron constants. Most failures come from a blocked loopback request, a plugin or theme conflict, host security rules, or a site that receives too few visits to trigger scheduled work on time. If you need dependable, fixed-time execution, have a server scheduler request wp-cron.php and then disable request-triggered spawning with DISABLE_WP_CRON.

What WP-Cron does, and why it can appear broken
WP-Cron is WordPress’s scheduling system. It handles scheduled posts and background events created by WordPress, plugins, and themes. Unlike a traditional Unix cron service, it is normally triggered by web requests: when someone loads a page, WordPress checks whether an event is due and attempts a loopback HTTP request to wp-cron.php to process it.

- Low-traffic sites can run events late. If no one visits the site around the scheduled time, there may be no request to start the work.
- A request can fail before the event runs. Plugins, themes, firewalls, DNS, SSL settings, or HTTP authentication can block the loopback request even when the public site appears normal.
A WP-Cron warning can affect more than publishing. Plugin and theme auto-updates also depend on scheduled cron tasks, so a failure may leave maintenance jobs waiting in the queue.

Start with the fastest diagnostic path
Use this order so you can separate a scheduling-delay problem from a genuine cron-spawn failure.
- Open Tools → Site Health → Status and record any failed scheduled-event or loopback warning, including the hook name, HTTP status, and timestamp.
- From the WordPress installation directory, run
wp cron testwith WP-CLI available. - Inspect
wp-config.phpforDISABLE_WP_CRONandALTERNATE_WP_CRON. - Temporarily isolate plugins and the active theme, then run the test again.
- If the failure remains, ask the host to inspect outbound loopback requests and server security rules.
- For low-traffic or deadline-sensitive sites, move triggering to a server-side scheduler.
Do not change several variables at once. Keeping the original error, changing one layer, and retesting gives you evidence about the actual cause.
1. Read Site Health before changing anything
Go to Tools → Site Health → Status. Look for notices about scheduled events, loopback requests, or failed background tasks. Site Health is useful even when scheduled posts are merely late, because it may expose an HTTP status or a failed check that the post editor does not show.
Record the details
- The exact wording of the warning.
- The hook or scheduled event named in the message.
- The HTTP status code, if one is shown.
- The time of the failed attempt.
- Whether the warning is about a loopback request or simply an event that has not run yet.
Save this information before deactivating anything. It gives you a before-and-after comparison and provides the host with concrete data if server-side troubleshooting is required.
2. Run wp cron test
When WP-CLI is available, this is the quickest authoritative check. Change to the directory containing your WordPress installation and run:
wp cron testA working spawn reports:
Success: WP-Cron spawning is working as expected.The command checks whether cron has been disabled, warns about an alternate spawning mode, attempts the HTTP spawn, and reports a non-200 response from that request. Treat each result differently rather than assuming every warning means the same thing.
If the command reports that spawning works
The loopback mechanism is responding, so a late post may be a traffic problem or a particular scheduled event rather than a global spawn failure. Compare the event’s due time with the times at which the site receives requests. Also check Site Health for a hook-specific error.

If the command reports DISABLE_WP_CRON
WordPress has been told not to start cron during normal page requests. That is appropriate only when another scheduler is deliberately requesting wp-cron.php. If you did not intend to run a separate scheduler, remove the unintended setting according to your configuration-management process and test again. Do not simply toggle constants without understanding who is responsible for triggering events.
If it warns about ALTERNATE_WP_CRON
This constant changes the spawning path. Keep the warning in context with the HTTP result and your hosting setup. An alternate path may be intentional, but it can also interact poorly with redirects, authentication, or security rules. Change it only after you have captured the test output and know why it was enabled.
If the HTTP spawn returns a non-200 response
A non-200 response means the loopback request reached an HTTP layer but did not receive the expected success response. The next step is isolation: test with plugins and the theme removed from the request path, then investigate host controls if the response persists.

3. Check the cron constants in wp-config.php
Open the site’s wp-config.php and search for these definitions:
define( 'DISABLE_WP_CRON', true );
define( 'ALTERNATE_WP_CRON', true );The values shown are examples of settings that materially change cron behavior; your file may contain only one, different formatting, or no definition at all.
DISABLE_WP_CRON
When this constant is true, normal page loads do not spawn WP-Cron. Every scheduled event then depends on an external or server-side scheduler calling wp-cron.php. If a previous administrator enabled it to reduce page-load overhead but never installed the replacement scheduler, scheduled work will accumulate.
ALTERNATE_WP_CRON
This setting changes how WordPress starts cron. Evaluate it together with the output of wp cron test, the Site Health message, and any redirect or authentication behavior at the host. Do not add or remove it as a generic fix.

After any intentional configuration change, rerun the WP-CLI test and check Site Health again. Keep a record of the old value so you can roll back if the result worsens.
4. Isolate plugin and theme conflicts
WordPress’s loopback guidance recommends removing application-level variables before blaming the server. A plugin or theme can intercept HTTP requests, add authentication, alter SSL behavior, or return an error during the cron request.
Use the dashboard when it is available
- Deactivate all plugins, including must-use plugins when your administration method permits it.
- Switch the active theme to a bundled default theme.
- Run
wp cron testand review Tools → Site Health → Status. - If the test now passes, reactivate the theme and plugins one at a time.
- After each activation, rerun the test and wait for the relevant Site Health check to refresh.
The first component whose activation brings back the failure is the leading suspect. Check its settings, update it through your normal change process, and ask its developer for a fix if the conflict is reproducible.
When you cannot reach the dashboard
Use SFTP, FTP, or your host’s file manager to temporarily rename the plugins directory or the directory of the active theme. Renaming prevents WordPress from loading the component, allowing you to regain access and perform the same controlled test. Restore the original directory name after each experiment and reactivate components individually.

Avoid deleting plugin files as a diagnostic step; deactivation or a reversible rename preserves the evidence and the configuration.
5. Investigate host-level loopback blocks
If WP-Cron still fails with plugins and the theme ruled out, the problem is likely outside WordPress. WordPress identifies several host-level causes:
- Outbound firewall or security rules that reject a request from the server to its own site.
- DNS that resolves the site to an unreachable or incorrect address from inside the hosting network.
- SSL configuration that the server cannot validate when it connects back to the site over HTTPS.
- HTTP authentication that requires credentials the cron request does not have.
What to give your host
Send the exact site URL being requested, the HTTP status, the timestamp, the Site Health wording, and the complete wp cron test output. State whether the failure disappears when plugins and the theme are inactive. Ask the host to check outbound self-requests, DNS resolution from the server, TLS validation, firewall logs, and any authentication or web-application-security rule that matches wp-cron.php.

This information is more useful than reporting only that “scheduled posts are late.” It tells support whether to inspect WordPress code, the HTTP response, or the server network path.

There are two valid operating models. Choose based on timing and control requirements rather than treating one as universally superior.

Even a server scheduler still depends on a successful HTTP request to wp-cron.php. It does not fix a firewall, DNS, SSL, or authentication block; it only makes the trigger predictable once that path works.
7. Move to a server scheduler when timing matters
If visitors are infrequent or a job must run on a dependable interval, configure the scheduler to request wp-cron.php. The WordPress requirement is an HTTP request to that endpoint; the exact scheduler syntax depends on your host.
Linux crontab example
A valid five-field entry that runs every five minutes is:

The */5 * * * * expression means every five minutes; it is an example interval, not a universal requirement. Use an interval that matches the event deadlines and your host’s resource policy.
Prevent duplicate spawning
Once the server scheduler is confirmed to run successfully, set DISABLE_WP_CRON to true so ordinary page loads do not also attempt to spawn cron. Make that change only after the replacement scheduler is active. Otherwise, disabling WP-Cron removes the normal trigger and leaves events waiting.
Validate the new arrangement
- Run the scheduler command manually once and confirm it returns successfully.
- Check the scheduler’s log for failures and the requested URL.
- Run
wp cron testand inspect Site Health. - Confirm that a known scheduled event completes at its next due time.
- Keep the scheduler interval and ownership documented so a future administrator does not remove the only cron trigger.
8. Common symptoms and the appropriate response
Scheduled posts are late, but wp cron test succeeds
The spawn path is responding. First consider traffic: WP-Cron waits for requests, so a quiet site may not trigger the event at the intended minute. An external periodic request or a server scheduler addresses that timing issue. If only one event is affected, inspect that hook’s plugin or theme rather than changing global cron settings.
Site Health reports a loopback error
Capture its HTTP status and timestamp, run wp cron test, and isolate plugins and the theme. If the error remains, provide the details to the host for firewall, DNS, SSL, and authentication checks.

The site has DISABLE_WP_CRON enabled and no scheduled jobs run
Install or restore the intended server-side trigger, or remove the constant if no separate scheduler is required. Re-test after the change rather than assuming the setting itself is the complete diagnosis.
Auto-updates are not happening
Plugin and theme auto-updates use WP-Cron tasks. Treat this as evidence of a broader scheduling problem: inspect Site Health and the WP-CLI result instead of manually running updates as the only remedy.
The dashboard is inaccessible after a change
Use SFTP, FTP, or the hosting file manager to reverse the last plugin, theme, or configuration change. A reversible rename is safer than deleting files. Once access returns, repeat the isolation process one component at a time.
9. A repeatable verification checklist
- Site Health shows no unresolved loopback or scheduled-event warning.
wp cron testreports that spawning is working as expected.DISABLE_WP_CRONis either absent or paired with a documented, working scheduler.ALTERNATE_WP_CRONhas a known reason for being enabled and does not coincide with the failing path.- Plugins, must-use plugins, and the active theme have been tested as possible conflicts.
- The host has confirmed outbound self-requests, DNS, SSL, firewall, and authentication behavior when application-level isolation did not solve the problem.
- A scheduled event has completed after the fix, not merely passed a configuration check.
Keep the successful test output and the final scheduler configuration with your site’s operational notes. That record prevents a later migration or security change from silently removing the only cron trigger.
When to ask for managed hosting help
Escalate when the loopback fails with a default theme and plugins disabled, when you lack access to firewall or DNS settings, or when HTTPS and authentication are controlled by the host. A host that can inspect server logs and internal DNS can resolve issues that cannot be diagnosed from the WordPress dashboard alone. Provide the precise evidence listed earlier so support can investigate the request rather than reset unrelated settings.
The practical fix in one decision
If wp cron test passes, decide whether the remaining problem is simply low traffic. If it fails, identify whether the cause is a disabled constant, an application conflict, or a host-level loopback block. Once the HTTP path works, keep normal WP-Cron for best-effort jobs or use a fixed server scheduler for dependable timing. The reliable configuration is the one that has a working trigger, a reachable wp-cron.php, and a verification result you can reproduce.
