A missing Word template is usually a location or loading issue—not proof that the file has disappeared. First identify whether it is missing from the template gallery, is not loaded as a template or add-in, or is Word’s Normal.dotm file. The fix depends on that symptom and on whether you use Word for Windows, Mac, or the web.
Identify what is missing before changing files
These three problems look similar but have different fixes:

- Template absent from New or Personal: Word may not be pointed at the folder containing your personal templates.
- Template or add-in not active: The file may exist but not be loaded into desktop Word.
- Normal.dotm missing or damaged: Word’s global default template may need to be recreated, which can reset custom settings.
The steps below distinguish Windows desktop and Mac desktop instructions. They are not universal instructions for Word for the web. Microsoft notes that its add-in loading steps apply to Word for Windows desktop and may differ on Mac and web.

If a personal template is missing from the gallery in Windows
Microsoft says templates made in earlier Microsoft 365 versions may still be on the computer even though current Microsoft 365 does not show them by default. Point Word to the folder that contains them, then check the Personal tab. Microsoft’s custom-template instructions cover this setting.
#1 Best Overall
- Press Windows key + R, enter
%appdata%MicrosoftTemplates, and press Enter. - In File Explorer, copy the folder address shown for the opened Templates folder.
- In Word, select File > Options > Save.
- Under Save documents, paste the address into Default personal templates location, then select OK.
- Open Word’s template picker and select the Personal tab.
If the template still is not listed, check whether the file is actually in the folder whose address you entered. Microsoft says to repeat the location setup in each Microsoft 365 program where you want personal templates to appear.
If a template or add-in is not loaded in Windows desktop Word
The personal-template gallery and loaded Word add-ins are separate. To load an existing template for the current Word session:
Rank #2
- Select File > Options > Add-Ins.
- Under Manage, choose Word Add-ins, then select Go.
- In the Templates tab, select the item to load it. If it is not listed, select Add and browse to its folder.
This load lasts only for the current Word session. To have a template or add-in load whenever Word starts, find the Startup folder path in File > Options > Advanced > General > File Locations and store the file in that folder. See Microsoft’s instructions for loading or unloading a template or add-in.
Unloading a template removes it from use; it does not delete the file from the computer. Removing an item in the add-ins dialog is not the same as deleting its file.

If Normal.dotm is missing or appears damaged
Normal.dotm stores Word’s global default settings and customizations. Microsoft says that if it is renamed, damaged, or moved, Word creates a new version with original default settings the next time Word starts. Customizations in the old file are not transferred. Before attempting recovery, preserve a copy of the old file if it exists.
Windows
Microsoft lists this folder for Normal.dotm on Windows: C:Users<user>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplates. Quit Word before moving or renaming a file. If Normal.dotm is present and you need to test whether it is the cause, copy it to a safe location first; only then rename or move the working copy. Start Word to let it create a default replacement. Open the template through Word’s File > Open route if you need to inspect it. Do not delete the preserved copy unless you are sure you no longer need its customizations. Microsoft’s Normal.dotm guidance describes the reset behavior.
Rank #4
Mac
Do not use the Windows path on a Mac. Microsoft documents the default Word for Mac templates folder as /Users/username/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Templates. The User templates folder can be checked or changed in Word > Preferences > File Locations. Microsoft also describes a separate recovery case: after a primary-language change, a language-specific backup may be named Normal.dotm-(number). That is distinct from a general missing-template problem. See Microsoft’s instructions for changing the Normal template.
Check the template file type before restoring or replacing it
Word template files can use .dotx, .dot, or .dotm. A .dotm template supports macros, so do not discard or convert one without considering whether its macros are needed. A template provides a reusable structure for creating separate documents; changing the default template and creating a new document from a template are different actions. Microsoft explains these formats and template behavior in its template guidance.

If Word crashes while using a template
A crash is not the same symptom as a template missing from the gallery. Microsoft’s known-issues page, last updated September 2026, listed a fixed issue in which Word could close when a third-party app populated a document template, and an investigating crash during mail merge with .dot or .dotm templates. These incidents may not explain other template problems, and the status can change. Check the live Microsoft 365 known-issues page for current status and any linked workaround.
