The right checks depend on that implementation: a failed setup command or unsupported PostUp option can stop a manual preshared-key workflow, while an app-managed feature needs provider-specific troubleshooting.
What post-quantum protection changes in WireGuard
WireGuard is not post-quantum secure by default. The WireGuard project describes its optional preshared-key slot as a way to add a post-quantum secrecy layer when a genuine post-quantum handshake generates and supplies that key. As the project puts it, “WireGuard is not, by default, post-quantum secure.” It also says, “The best bet for post-quantum security is to run a truly post-quantum handshake on top of WireGuard, and then insert that key into WireGuard’s pre-shared key slot.” WireGuard project: Known Limitations.

That distinction matters when diagnosing a failure: enabling a provider’s post-quantum option may add a separate handshake or configuration step. It does not mean every WireGuard implementation uses the same setup or failure mode.
Identify how the feature was enabled
Determine whether you turned on a setting in a VPN app or edited a WireGuard configuration to run an external utility. Follow the matching path below; Mullvad’s manual instructions apply specifically to its own configurations, not arbitrary WireGuard endpoints.

If you enabled a setting in an app
Use the VPN provider’s current instructions and status indicator. For Mullvad, the app setting is at Settings → VPN settings → WireGuard settings → Quantum-resistant tunnel. Mullvad announced the desktop feature in 2023; that announcement’s platform availability describes that time, so use its current help guide for present-day instructions: Mullvad: Quantum-resistant tunnel and Mullvad’s 2023 announcement.
If you added a manual command or hook
Check the instructions for the specific provider and configuration. The utility and PostUp commands below are Mullvad’s documented manual method, not general instructions for adding post-quantum protection to any WireGuard VPN: Mullvad: Set up a quantum-resistant tunnel with WireGuard.
For Mullvad manual setups, verify the key setup completed
Mullvad’s manual method uses mullvad-upgrade-tunnel and a PostUp command to obtain and configure the preshared key. Confirm the utility is installed for your platform and that the command in your configuration matches Mullvad’s current guide. Its syntax differs by platform: the guide uses %i on Linux and macOS, and %WIREGUARD_TUNNEL_NAME% on Windows.

After bringing the interface up, inspect the peer with wg. Mullvad says its output should include a line like preshared key: (hidden). If that line is absent, the expected PSK was not configured; recheck the hook, utility, and client support before investigating unrelated routing. If it is present, that confirms a PSK is configured, but does not by itself prove that networking or server-side settings are correct. Check whether your WireGuard client supports the manual method
macOS
Mullvad says its WireGuard client from the Mac App Store does not support the PostUp option required by this manual method. For that Mullvad workflow, its guide recommends installing WireGuard with Homebrew instead. This limitation concerns the manual hook; it is not a reason to assume an app-managed feature behaves the same way.
Windows
Mullvad says PostUp is disabled by default in the Windows WireGuard client. Its manual guide documents enabling it with a registry value named DangerousScriptExecution, and explicitly notes the security concerns. Treat that as a security-sensitive, provider-specific change only if you deliberately choose Mullvad’s manual route and understand the implications. Do not enable script execution as a generic fix; the provider app’s feature is a separate route.

Remove Mullvad’s documented SaveConfig conflict
If you use mullvad-upgrade-tunnel, check whether your configuration contains SaveConfig = true. Mullvad says not to combine this setting with the utility: when WireGuard shuts down, it may save the temporary ephemeral peer accepted by the relay over the regular peer configuration. A later connection attempt can then fail.
Disable SaveConfig and restore the regular provider configuration before reconnecting. Use Mullvad’s manual instructions and utility documentation for the configuration details.

Match Linux errors to the documented checks
RTNETLINK answers: No such device
Mullvad’s troubleshooting guidance for this particular wg-quick error says to check that the configured MTU is not below 1280. This is a specific troubleshooting threshold, not a general recommendation to change MTU whenever a post-quantum connection fails.
Protocol not supported for the kernel module
For this Linux kernel-module error, Mullvad advises checking that the running kernel and installed kernel headers match those used to install the WireGuard packages, then checking whether the module loads. The cited guidance does not identify either error as being caused by post-quantum protection itself. See Mullvad: WireGuard problem solving.

WireGuard sends packets over UDP and uses a Noise_IK handshake. If the interface comes up but no recent handshake appears, a failed hook is one possibility in a manual setup, but there is no single cause established for every connection that stays on “connecting.” Check the configuration first, then use the provider’s current guidance for the exact client, operating system, network, and error. WireGuard’s protocol documentation discusses timestamp checks and server behavior under load, but those details are not a diagnosis unless they match the observed situation: WireGuard protocol.
Use disabling the feature as a controlled comparison
If your provider offers a non-quantum-resistant mode, try the same profile with the feature disabled and compare the result. This can help isolate whether the added setup path is involved; it is a troubleshooting comparison, not a recommendation to leave the protection off. Providers differ, and disabling the option is not guaranteed to fix the connection.
What to include if the checklist does not resolve it
Give your VPN provider or support forum enough information to distinguish a configuration failure from a connection problem:
- Operating system and version.
- WireGuard client and version, plus VPN provider.
- The exact error message and whether the interface comes up.
- Whether a recent handshake appears.
- For Mullvad’s manual workflow, whether
wgshows the preshared-key line. - What changed when you disabled the post-quantum option, if your provider supports that comparison.
There is no universal repair supported for every provider, client, and platform. Use the provider’s instructions for the specific feature you enabled.
