Start by backing up important files, recording the update error and timing, and running Windows’ built-in troubleshooter. Then check storage, connectivity, startup apps, drivers, malware, and hardware separately from the update itself. If Windows components may be damaged, run Microsoft’s DISM and SFC repairs in that order. If one recent update clearly matches the start of the problem, uninstall it cautiously; on eligible Windows 11 systems, try the repair reinstall first because it keeps apps, files, and settings. Use Windows Recovery Environment or Reset this PC only after understanding the data and application consequences.
Before changing anything: protect your data and define the failure
A slow or unstable computer that became troublesome after an update does not automatically prove that the update is the cause. Microsoft also lists low free storage, too many startup programs, outdated software, malware, and aging hardware as causes of poor performance. Several can exist at once, so establish what changed before removing anything.

- Back up important files. Copy documents, photos, project folders, browser exports, and any other irreplaceable data to a separate drive or a trusted cloud location. Do this before repair commands, update removal, or recovery work. Reset this PC can remove applications, settings, and, depending on the selected option, personal files.
- Record the symptoms. Write down the update error code or KB identifier, whether the update is downloading, installing, or failing during a restart, and whether the problem began immediately after a particular installation date.
- Check whether Windows still starts. Note whether the desktop loads normally, loads slowly, repeatedly restarts, or cannot start at all. Also record whether the slowdown is constant or appears only while Windows Update is active.
- Do not reset or uninstall yet. A written timeline makes it easier to distinguish a failed update from a coincidental performance problem and gives useful information if you need support.
Use this decision path
| What you observe | Best first move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Windows starts, but an update fails or remains at 0% or 100% | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, then check storage, network, date and time, drivers, VPN, and security software | These low-risk checks address common update prerequisites without undoing changes |
| An installation reaches roughly 51–99% and never completes | Let the restart finish if progress is still changing; after Windows returns, use the troubleshooter and review update history | A failed installation may need a repair pass or may identify a particular update to remove |
| The PC is slow, but Windows Update reports success | Inspect startup apps, storage, running processes, malware, software age, and hardware limits separately | Microsoft identifies several non-update causes of slow performance |
| System errors suggest damaged Windows files | Run elevated DISM, then SFC, and allow both to finish | The commands repair the component store and system files in Microsoft’s documented order |
| Instability began directly after one identifiable update | Try Windows 11’s repair reinstall when offered; otherwise consider uninstalling that update | A repair reinstall preserves the current installation, while uninstalling targets a specific recent change |
| Windows will not start normally | Enter Windows Recovery Environment and use its recovery tools | Recovery tools work outside the normal desktop and include Startup Repair and Uninstall Updates |

Checks that can block an update
- Internet connection: Confirm that ordinary websites or another known service load reliably. If a VPN is active, disconnect it temporarily as a diagnostic test, then reconnect it when finished.
- Free space: Open Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10) and remove only files you have verified are disposable. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page gives at least 16 GB for a 32-bit operating system or 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system for particular insufficient-space upgrade errors. That figure is not a universal minimum for every current installation and does not by itself explain general slowness.
- Date and time: Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and time-zone settings when appropriate, then retry.
- Drivers: Install relevant driver updates offered through Windows Update or the computer manufacturer. A driver problem can make an otherwise successful update look like a stability failure.
- Update services: If an error specifically points to a service, open the Services management console, locate Windows Update, and verify that it is not disabled. Do not change unrelated services blindly.
- Third-party security software: Microsoft notes that some security products can interfere with feature updates. Do not indiscriminately turn protection off. If Microsoft’s advanced guidance identifies your product as the likely conflict, follow its instructions for temporary removal, complete the update, and reinstall a compatible security product immediately.
Find out whether the update is really causing the slowdown
Separate update repair from performance diagnosis. A successful update can coincide with a storage shortage, a new startup program, malware, or hardware that is reaching its limits.
Check resource use and startup programs
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, sort by CPU, Memory, or Disk and observe which program remains at the top when the PC feels slow. Allow a few minutes after sign-in for temporary post-update activity to settle.
- Open Startup apps and disable only programs you recognize and do not need at sign-in. Do not disable security, touchpad, graphics, accessibility, or hardware-control components without knowing their purpose.
- Restart and check whether the same workload still causes the slowdown. A change after one startup item is disabled identifies a conflict more reliably than assuming Windows Update is responsible.
Review storage, software, and malware
- In Settings > System > Storage, identify large temporary files and applications before removing them. Keep working files and recovery data until your backup is verified.
- Install relevant Windows updates and optional drivers when they address the device or application involved. An old application can be incompatible with a newly serviced Windows version.
- Run a Windows Security malware scan. Malware can consume CPU, memory, disk, or network resources and can damage update components.
- Consider the computer’s age and hardware limits. Microsoft cautions that older PCs may not improve substantially from software cleanup alone, and several causes may contribute simultaneously.
Do not promise that an update, cleanup utility, or one setting will make every PC faster. The useful result of this stage is a measurable cause: a process, startup item, storage condition, malware detection, or hardware limitation that you can address directly.
Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when update errors or broader system behavior suggest corrupted or missing Windows components. Microsoft labels the procedure advanced and recommends it for people comfortable with the command line. You need administrator permissions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Let SFC reach 100 percent before closing Command Prompt. Restart Windows and try the update again. These tools scan for corrupted system files and restore missing or damaged components, but a successful scan does not prove that every underlying performance or update cause has been found. If the commands report an error, save the exact message rather than repeatedly running them at random.
When one recent update appears to be responsible
Use update history to compare the installation date with the first crash, boot failure, driver problem, or major slowdown. Timing is useful evidence, but it is not proof by itself.
Try Windows 11’s repair reinstall first when available
On an eligible Windows 11 PC, open Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. Microsoft says this downloads and reinstalls the current Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, personal files, and settings.

Uninstall a specific update only when the evidence supports it
For Windows 11, go to Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history > Uninstall updates. Select the update whose date and symptoms match, then follow the prompts.
Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Microsoft also warns that removing a security update has security consequences; use this as a targeted recovery step, not as a permanent strategy for avoiding updates. After removal, restart and check whether the specific symptom has changed. Keep a record of the update name and date so you can explain what was changed.
If Windows will not start: use Windows Recovery Environment
Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) provides recovery tools outside the normal desktop. If Windows still reaches the sign-in screen, you can usually enter it from Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now on Windows 10. You can also hold Shift while selecting Restart from the power menu.

- Startup Repair: attempts to correct problems preventing a normal boot.
- Uninstall Updates: removes an eligible recent quality or feature update when the update is a plausible cause.
- System Restore: returns system configuration to an available restore point; its availability depends on whether restore points exist.
- Command Prompt: provides an advanced route for repair commands when Windows cannot be used normally.
- Reset this PC: reinstalls Windows and should be reserved for a broader recovery decision.
If the computer cannot reach Windows RE, Microsoft documents creating Windows installation media on a USB drive using another working PC and booting from it to reach recovery tools. A USB drive is an optional aid for this advanced situation, not a requirement for ordinary update troubleshooting.
Understand Reset this PC before selecting it
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and is more disruptive than a troubleshooter, component repair, repair reinstall, or targeted update removal. Back up first and make sure you have the BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled.
| Reset choice | What it keeps | What it removes |
|---|---|---|
| Keep my files | Personal files | Installed apps and settings |
| Remove everything | Nothing from the Windows installation’s personal data, apps, or settings | Personal files, apps, and settings |
Reset also asks how to reinstall Windows:
- Cloud download fetches a fresh Windows copy. It requires a reliable internet connection and downloads the installation files.
- Local reinstall uses files already on the device and may not include the latest updates.
Choose Reset only after you have decided which applications you can reinstall, confirmed backups, located license or sign-in information you need, and accepted the time required to restore your working environment.

| Option | When Windows must boot? | Targets | Data and app impact | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Normally yes | Common update configuration and service issues | Designed as a low-disruption check | Will not fix every driver, malware, or hardware problem |
| DISM then SFC | Normally yes; Command Prompt can also be reached in Windows RE | Damaged component store and system files | Does not intentionally remove personal files or applications | Advanced commands require administrator access and do not guarantee a diagnosis |
| Windows 11 repair reinstall | Yes, and the option must be offered | Current Windows files and components | Preserves apps, files, and settings | Unavailable on some managed, older, or insufficiently serviced systems |
| Uninstall an update | No; Windows RE can be used if normal boot fails | One recent update | Reverses that update, but does not undo unrelated causes | Some updates cannot be removed; removing security fixes increases exposure |
| Reset this PC | No; available through Windows RE | Broad Windows installation problems | Keep my files removes apps and settings; Remove everything also removes personal files | Requires backups, reinstalling applications, and possibly a BitLocker key |
Windows 10 support status changes the decision
Microsoft states that free Windows 10 software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. If the affected computer is still running Windows 10, repairing the immediate update problem does not restore ongoing free security support. Check whether the hardware and organization’s policies support moving to a supported Windows release, and plan that transition rather than treating repeated update failures as a permanent Windows 10 maintenance plan.

Common failure patterns and the safest response
Update is stuck at 0% or 100%
First confirm that the machine is still responsive and that the percentage is not merely taking time during verification or restart. If Windows returns to the desktop, run the appropriate troubleshooter, check free space and connectivity, restart, and review update history. Avoid holding the power button unless the computer is completely unresponsive and you have no normal restart route.
Installation reaches 51–99% and then fails
Record the error and KB identifier, check update history, and apply the basic checks before attempting removal. If system-file damage is suspected, complete DISM followed by SFC. A targeted uninstall is appropriate only when the failed update’s timing and symptoms match and Windows offers the uninstall route.
The computer is slow after the update but has no update error
Use Task Manager, Storage settings, startup-app review, Windows Security scanning, and software or hardware checks. Do not keep uninstalling updates when the evidence points to a startup program, low storage, malware, or an aging device.
Files seem to be missing after the update
Stop destructive recovery actions, verify that you signed into the expected Windows account, and check your backup before resetting or removing updates. Record which folders and file types are affected. If the files are not in the expected profile or backup, use Windows support or a qualified technician rather than repeatedly changing the installation.
The Windows 11 repair-reinstall option is missing
Check the Windows release, whether the device is managed by work or school, and whether it has the required servicing update. The missing option is an eligibility or policy condition in Microsoft’s guidance, not proof that the PC has suffered additional damage. Use the troubleshooter, DISM/SFC, or Windows RE route that matches the symptoms.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
- You cannot back up data or do not have the BitLocker recovery key.
- The machine repeatedly loses power, overheats, shows storage errors, or has signs of failing hardware.
- Windows cannot boot and none of the Windows RE options completes.
- Files are missing and no verified backup exists.
- The PC is managed by an employer or school and policy blocks updates, recovery options, or security software changes.
At that point, preserve the error codes, update names, dates, and exact steps already attempted. That record prevents support staff from repeating destructive changes and helps them decide whether the fault is Windows, a driver, an application, malware, or hardware.
