Usually, not through ordinary Google Maps sharing unless someone has access to your account or device. Google’s documented Location Sharing feature is off until a user shares a location with selected people or creates a share link. However, a recipient can see your recent device location, name, profile photo and battery status, including when Google apps are not open. Location Sharing is separate from Timeline, so turning Timeline off does not end a live share.
What “tracking through Google Maps” can mean
The word tracking covers two different Google features. Location Sharing lets selected people view your current or recent device location. Timeline stores places you visited and routes you took for your own Google Account history. They have different audiences, data and controls.

Google says the Location Sharing setting is off by default and that sharing is controlled by the account holder through Google services. Its documentation does not establish that an ordinary Maps share can be enabled secretly without the account holder’s participation or access. That is narrower than saying a phone or account cannot be compromised: someone who can use your unlocked phone, sign in to your Google Account, or control another signed-in device could potentially change settings. Google’s help pages explain the controls, but they cannot diagnose a particular account or phone.
What a Google Maps location recipient can see
When you share through Location Sharing, Google says recipients may see your device’s recent location even when Google apps are not being used. They may also see your name, profile photo and the battery status of the shared device. This is why a live share can reveal more than a one-time pin sent in a message.

A share can be made to an individual Google account or through a link-based sharing option. Anyone who obtains an active share link may be able to use it within the limits Google applies to that link, so treat a link as access that should be revoked when it is no longer needed.
The visibility belongs to the particular Google account and device involved. If you are signed in on more than one phone, tablet or other device, or use multiple Google accounts, a check on only one device may miss a share configured elsewhere.
Location Sharing versus Timeline
| Feature | Who can see it | What it contains | Default and relationship to the other feature | How you stop it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Location Sharing | People you select, or people with an active share link | Current or recent device location; Google also says recipients may see your name, photo and device battery status | Off until you share through a Google service; it can continue while Timeline is off | Open Maps, choose Location sharing, select a person and choose Stop; review and revoke active links |
| Timeline | Your Google Account history, rather than a live recipient list | Saved visits and routes, when the feature is enabled | Off by default and opt-in; it is not live sharing | Review Timeline, then use its controls to turn it off, delete data or configure auto-delete |
Google’s Maps Help states: “Location Sharing works even when Timeline is turned off.” Its separate Timeline guidance says: “Timeline is off by default for your Google Account and can only be turned on if you opt in.” These statements describe different settings, not two names for the same feature.

- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Select Location sharing.
- Review every person listed as able to see your location.
- Review any active link-based share shown in the same area. A link you no longer recognize should be treated as active access until you stop it.
- To end an individual share, select that person and tap Stop.
Repeat the check for each Google Account you use and each device on which those accounts are signed in. Google describes Location Sharing as device- and account-specific, so stopping a share on one account or device does not prove that another account or device has the same setting.
Stop or pause sharing across your Google setup
End a known person’s access
In Maps > profile picture or initial > Location sharing, select the person and choose Stop. This ends that listed share. If several people are listed, handle each one individually rather than assuming one change removes all recipients.
Check other signed-in accounts and devices
Sign in to each Google Account you actually use and inspect Location sharing on the device associated with it. If a family, work or old phone remains signed in, it can have a different setting. Google’s account and device documentation also describes controls for stopping a share or pausing Location Sharing on Android; use the account and device that originally created the share when possible.
Review the services that can share location
Google identifies more than Maps as a possible location-sharing surface. Its settings documentation names Messages, Find Hub, Family Link and Personal Safety alongside Maps. Check those services for a share, link or safety feature you do not expect. A clean Maps list does not by itself prove that no Google service is sharing location.

Timeline is a separate privacy review
If your concern is a record of where you have been, open Timeline and review its own controls. Timeline can save visits and routes when you have opted in. You can turn it off, delete stored entries and configure deletion options such as auto-delete where those controls are available to your account.
Do not use turning Timeline off as a substitute for checking Location sharing. The two features are independent, and a live recipient can continue seeing a shared device location after Timeline is disabled.
Google also warns that turning off or deleting Timeline does not necessarily stop location data from being saved through other Google sites, apps and services. Therefore, deleting Timeline addresses that history, not every location record associated with your Google activity.

Arrival and departure notifications are another setting
A person who already receives your shared location can add a notification for when you arrive at or leave a specified place. Google says the person who created the notification receives an email, and a push notification if Maps notifications are enabled.

These notifications are not the same as the underlying location share. Google says the sharer can turn off arrival or departure notifications while leaving Location Sharing active. If you want to end the recipient’s access entirely, stop the location share; do not rely only on disabling a notification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if you find a share you do not recognize
- In Maps, open Location sharing and stop the unrecognized person or link immediately.
- Repeat the review on every Google Account and device you use.
- Inspect Messages, Find Hub, Family Link and Personal Safety for another location-sharing arrangement.
- Review who can access your Google Account and your devices. Remove access you do not recognize and secure the account using Google’s available account-security controls.
- Review Timeline separately if the concern includes stored travel history, then turn it off or delete entries according to your preference.
- Record what you found, including the account and device, before changing settings if you may need help from an administrator, guardian or security professional.
Stopping a share is the immediate privacy action. It does not establish how the share was created or whether another person had access to the account or phone. If you suspect coercion, stalking or device compromise, use a safer device to seek help and consider local support or law-enforcement guidance; the Maps settings page alone cannot investigate those circumstances.
Common assumptions that lead to a false sense of privacy
“Timeline is off, so nobody can see me.”
False. Google explicitly says Location Sharing works when Timeline is turned off. Check the live-sharing list separately.

Not necessarily. Location Sharing is reviewed recipient by recipient, and a link-based share may be separate. Check the complete list and any active links.
Best Value
“Maps is closed, so sharing stopped.”
Not according to Google’s description of Location Sharing. A recipient may see recent device location even when Google apps are not being used.
“A Timeline deletion removes every Google location record.”
No. Google says other Google sites, apps and services may save location data independently of Timeline.
“A settings check proves my phone is safe.”
No. The documented controls show what Google sharing is configured to do. They cannot determine whether someone accessed your account, manages your device, installed another tracking method or is using coercion. Those are separate security questions outside the cited Maps controls.

The bottom line on secret Google Maps tracking
Google’s documented design does not show an ordinary Maps recipient secretly enabling Location Sharing without the account holder’s participation or access. But once a share exists, the recipient may see recent device location, identity details and battery status, even while Maps is not open and Timeline is off. The reliable check is to inspect Location sharing itself on every relevant account and device, stop unwanted recipients and links, then review Google’s other sharing surfaces and Timeline independently.
