A blank Windows Security window does not, by itself, prove that antivirus protection is off. First check which security provider Windows reports and verify protection through that provider or the Virus & threat protection page. Then try the least disruptive app repair steps before considering Windows recovery.
First, confirm whether protection is actually missing
Windows Security’s Virus & threat protection page is where Windows displays current threat information, scan options, antivirus settings, and security intelligence update controls. If that page loads, review its status and run a scan or check for updates as appropriate. A blank window is a display symptom, not a reliable indication of the device’s protection state. Microsoft’s Windows Security overview describes the information and controls available there.

To see the security products Windows recognizes, open Windows Security > Settings > Manage providers. Review the listed providers for antivirus, firewall, and web protection. You can also open Windows Security > Settings > About to check the app version and policy information. If Windows Security will not open or remains unusable, check protection status directly with the listed provider or ask your work or school administrator. Microsoft’s settings guidance covers Manage providers and About. Managed-device policies may limit what you can see or change.

Restart Windows first. If the display problem remains, use the built-in app repair options where available. Microsoft notes that not every app exposes these controls.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Windows Security, open its menu, and select Advanced options if it appears.
- Select Repair, then reopen Windows Security and check whether the pages load.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to Advanced options and select Reset if offered.
Repair is the less disruptive option; try it before Reset. The controls and availability are described in Microsoft’s app repair guidance.
Install applicable Windows and security updates
Check Windows Update for available updates, then check Windows Security again. Microsoft also documents a Windows Security app and underlying service update for Windows 11 build 22000 or later. The page includes this PowerShell command for checking the running app package version:

That package guidance is version-specific; it is not a universal download or fix for every Windows edition. Check the applicability details on Microsoft’s Windows Security app update page before using it.

Microsoft’s Automatically fix Windows security issues page describes a troubleshooter for Windows 10 that checks and enables features including antivirus protection status and updates. It is not a general Windows 11 blank-screen fix.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.

If app repair and applicable updates do not resolve the issue, consider Windows recovery only after checking that you have a separate way to verify protection. Start with the least disruptive recovery choice; some recovery options can remove data. Back up important files before proceeding. Depending on the workflow, you may need recovery or installation media. A USB drive by itself does not repair a blank Windows Security screen.

Avoid risky shortcuts
- Do not turn off antivirus, firewall, or security services as a routine attempt to fix the display.
- Avoid unsupported registry edits and third-party “PC cleaner” downloads.
- Do not assume one command will repair every blank screen; Microsoft does not identify one guaranteed cause or universal fix for this symptom.
- If a work or school policy blocks access or settings, contact the device administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.
