If a Windows 11 update looks stuck or fails, first give it time if progress may still be active. If it remains at the same percentage, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then find the failed update’s error code in Update history and use it to choose the next check. Back up personal files before advanced repairs; no single fix applies to every failure.
Is the Windows 11 update really stuck?
There is no universal number of minutes after which an update is frozen. Microsoft says download and installation time varies with connection speed, network settings, and update size. If the percentage has not changed, try Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates or run the troubleshooter rather than assuming the update has failed. See Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guidance.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app and follow its prompts.
- If the issue remains, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run.
- Restart the PC when the troubleshooter finishes, then go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates again.
These are Microsoft’s recommended first-line steps for Windows 11. The Windows Update Troubleshooter page provides further instructions.
Find the exact error code
Messages such as “We couldn’t complete the updates” or “Failure configuring Windows Updates” describe a rollback, not its cause. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history, locate the unsuccessful update, and write down its error code. Use the code as a clue: Microsoft lists possible causes and checks, not a guaranteed diagnosis for each code. Its upgrade and installation error guide covers additional cases.

| Error or symptom | Possible cause or next check |
|---|---|
| 0xC1900101 | Often points to a driver issue. Check for compatible drivers, especially network or display drivers, through the PC or component manufacturer. Disconnect nonessential peripherals during an upgrade. Do not use indiscriminate driver-removal tools. |
| 0x800f0922 | Possible explanations include a connection problem with Windows Update servers, VPN interference, insufficient System Reserved partition space, low disk space, or component issues. Check your connection and VPN, available storage, and the error-specific guidance before choosing a repair. |
| 0x80070070 variants | Indicate insufficient available space for the upgrade. Free space on the internal drive and retry. |
| 0x80200056 | The upgrade may have been interrupted by a restart or sign-out. Plug in the PC, leave it on, and retry. |
| 0x8007000d, 0x80070057, or 0x800f081f | Microsoft recommends troubleshooting and, depending on the code, repairing system files with DISM and SFC or resetting Windows Update components. Consult the error-specific guidance before proceeding. |
| 0x80072f8f | Check the date, time, time zone, and time synchronization settings. |
Check power, internet, storage, and backups
- Connect the PC to power and make sure the internet connection is stable.
- Check the internal drive’s available space. Microsoft’s general Windows 11 upgrade guidance says a device may need at least 16 GB free for a 32-bit OS or 20 GB for a 64-bit OS; these are the figures in that guidance, not a promise that every update needs exactly that amount.
- Back up personal files before troubleshooting. A USB flash drive can be used to copy files; if you need removable storage, choose one with enough capacity for the files you plan to back up. An external drive does not, by itself, repair Windows Update.
Microsoft says a USB drive may help update a device with a small hard drive, but that does not mean it automatically substitutes for required internal free space. See Microsoft’s guidance on update prerequisites and troubleshooting.
Repair system files with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when system-file corruption is suspected or the error-specific guidance recommends them. They require administrator permissions. If you are not comfortable using an elevated Command Prompt, use Microsoft’s guided troubleshooting or seek help from a qualified support provider.

- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. - Then run
sfc /scannowand allow the scan to complete. - Restart the PC and check Windows Update again.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions say to run DISM before SFC. DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If the Windows Update client is broken, Microsoft documents using a running Windows installation or a side-by-side repair source instead.
Reinstall the current Windows version through Settings
Eligible Windows 11 PCs may offer Fix problems using Windows Update. The option downloads a repair version of the last successfully installed operating-system update and reinstalls the same Windows version to repair system files and components. Microsoft says this process preserves apps, files, and settings.

- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and keep the PC powered during the process.
The option may not appear on work- or school-managed devices, older Windows 11 versions, or systems without the required February 2024 optional update or a later update. Check Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current version of Windows for eligibility and details.

If the troubleshooter and checks tied to the error code do not resolve the problem, use Microsoft’s error-specific guidance or the eligible Settings recovery reinstall. Setup failures can involve drivers, software, peripherals, network or VPN conditions, storage, or background applications, so choose the next step based on the code and the PC’s circumstances. A clean installation is substantially more disruptive and is not the routine next step for an ordinary stuck update; back up files and seek appropriate guidance before considering it.
