Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If a Windows 11 update appears stuck or fails to install, start with the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app, then restart your PC and check for updates again. Before trying more disruptive fixes, check whether progress is still moving, confirm your internet connection and available disk space, and note the full error code. Those details help distinguish a slow update from a specific download, installation, or system problem.
Is the update actually stuck?
A progress number that has not changed immediately does not prove that installation has failed. Microsoft says, “The time required to download and install updates depends on connection speed, network settings, and the size of the update.” If the update is at 51–99%, allow for those factors; if the percentage remains unchanged, check again and run the troubleshooter.

Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100%
For an update that appears stuck at 0% or 100%, Microsoft recommends restarting the PC, checking the internet connection, and checking available disk space. Then open Settings > Windows Update and check whether the update can proceed. A stuck percentage by itself is not a diagnosis.

Choose a fix using the full error code
Match the complete code shown in Windows Update to the relevant guidance rather than assuming one code proves a cause. Microsoft associates these examples with possible causes and actions:
| Error code | Microsoft’s troubleshooting association | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| 0x80070005 | Access denied or insufficient permissions | Use the Windows Update troubleshooter first and follow Microsoft’s guidance for this code. |
| 0x800f0922 | Insufficient disk space is one possible reason | Free disk space; Microsoft also suggests disabling a VPN and trying again. |
| 0xC1900101 | An incompatible driver is a possible cause; disk space may also matter | Check available space and investigate driver compatibility. |
| 0x8007000d | Possible Windows Update file or cache corruption | Run the troubleshooter; if appropriate, follow Microsoft’s cache-clearing steps. |
| 0x80070422 | The Windows Update service may be disabled or stopped | Check the service settings using Microsoft’s instructions. |
These are diagnostic associations, not guaranteed explanations for every PC. Consult Microsoft Support’s troubleshooting guide for the exact code and symptom before taking a targeted step.
Clear the update cache only for a relevant file or cache error
Cache clearing is not a first step for every failed download or installation. For certain update-file or cache problems, Microsoft’s procedure is to stop the Windows Update service, delete the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and start the service again. Take care to delete only the specified folder contents and follow Microsoft’s complete instructions for stopping and restarting the service. If the code or symptom does not point to an update-file problem, use the matching troubleshooting branch instead.

Repair corrupted Windows components
If the troubleshooter and relevant code-specific steps do not resolve the issue, Microsoft documents the built-in Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) tools for scanning for corrupted system files and restoring missing or damaged Windows components. Use Microsoft’s current DISM and SFC instructions for the exact commands and order, rather than applying a guessed command sequence to every update error.
Use Windows Update’s repair reinstall if it is available
On supported configurations, Windows 11 offers Fix problems using Windows Update. Microsoft says this reinstalls the same Windows version and repairs system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. To check for it, open Settings > System > Recovery. Availability depends on the device configuration. Keep the PC connected to power and the internet throughout the process; see Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling Windows using Windows Update.
When external storage may help
If limited disk space is the obstacle, Microsoft says a device may need a USB drive to update. A USB flash drive can therefore be useful as temporary external storage in that situation. It is not a general fix for a failed download, corrupted update files, a stopped service, or an incompatible driver. Check the matching error guidance before buying or connecting storage.

Match the next step to the failure
- Download appears stalled: check the connection and available disk space, and allow for update size and network conditions.
- Installation percentage has not moved: do not treat the number alone as proof of failure; run the troubleshooter if it remains unchanged.
- An error code appears: use the full code to select the relevant Microsoft-documented branch.
- Basic troubleshooting does not work: follow Microsoft’s DISM/SFC instructions or check whether the Recovery repair-reinstall option is available.
