Windows may reinstall its network adapter driver after a restart; if Wi-Fi still does not work, use the exact driver for your PC model from the manufacturer’s support page. If the affected PC is offline, download the driver on another device and transfer it by USB.
First, check what happened to the adapter
Before uninstalling anything again or resetting networking, note the adapter name, any Device Manager error code, the installed driver’s version and date, and when the problem began. These details help distinguish a missing driver from a disabled adapter or a separate connection problem. Microsoft recommends establishing this baseline before disruptive troubleshooting.

- Restart the PC after the uninstall. Microsoft says Windows will look for and install the network adapter driver after restart. This can restore the driver, but does not guarantee that Windows will install the correct working driver for every PC.
- Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Look for the wireless adapter and note whether it is present, disabled, or showing an error.

If the wireless adapter is listed
It is disabled
Right-click the wireless adapter and select Enable device. Then check whether Wi-Fi becomes available.

It has an error
Write down the error code shown for the adapter. Device Manager error codes indicate why a driver or device did not load; use the code to guide diagnosis rather than repeatedly removing the driver without recording the result.
The adapter appears normal, but Wi-Fi still fails
Separate a Wi-Fi adapter problem from an internet or router problem. Check whether another device can use the same Wi-Fi network, and whether the affected PC can reach the internet over Ethernet if available. A PC connected to Wi-Fi but without internet access needs a different diagnosis from a wireless adapter missing in Device Manager.

If the adapter is missing from Device Manager
If the wireless adapter is not listed under Network adapters, Windows is not detecting it. That does not, by itself, prove the hardware is permanently broken. Microsoft advises that manual driver installation may be needed.
- Identify the PC manufacturer and exact model. Use the manufacturer’s official support page to find the wireless or network driver intended for that model.
- Check that the driver supports the Windows version installed on the PC and matches the relevant hardware. There is no universal driver package that can be recommended without those details.
- Install the manufacturer’s driver, then restart and check Device Manager and Wi-Fi again.
Microsoft recommends comparing the installed driver’s version and date in Device Manager with the latest version listed by the manufacturer, and checking Windows Update for available driver updates.

Install the driver when the PC is offline
On another computer or internet-connected device, download the correct driver from the PC manufacturer’s support page. Save the installer to a USB flash drive, connect that drive to the affected PC, and run the installer there. The USB drive only transfers the file; it does not restore the adapter on its own.
Why uninstalling may not leave the adapter without a driver
Uninstalling a device and removing its driver package are different actions. Windows may rediscover a device and reinstall its driver, immediately or after a reboot. Microsoft Learn notes: “If the device is uninstalled before it’s unplugged, Windows might then rediscover the device and reinstall drivers for it.” Removing the driver package is a separate option and can remove the package that Windows could otherwise use locally. When to try network resets
Network resets and command-line repairs affect broader network configuration; they are not the first fix for an adapter that is absent or whose driver is not installed. First confirm that Windows detects the adapter and that an appropriate driver is installed. If the adapter is present but connectivity problems remain, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes commands to reset Winsock and TCP/IP, release and renew the IP address, and flush DNS, as well as a Windows network reset.

Use a network reset cautiously: VPN clients or Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be reinstalled or configured afterward. Microsoft’s Wireless network connectivity issues troubleshooting also emphasizes identifying the scenario and recording baseline information before deleting profiles, removing devices or drivers, or resetting the network stack.
