Before buying, screen the price and seller, compare the product and packaging with official references, and use Pokémon Support’s bright-light check as a clue—not a guarantee. If a card still looks questionable, ask a trading-card specialist to evaluate it before you pay.
Check the seller and price before you inspect the cards
Start with the listing, not a magnifying glass. Pokémon Support points buyers toward major retailers such as Walmart, Target, and GameStop, as well as reputable local hobby shops. Those are practical starting points, not an absolute guarantee about any individual product or seller. Pokémon’s product-buying guidance lists these channels.

Be especially cautious if a booster pack is priced dramatically below suggested retail. Pokémon Support calls that a near-certain warning sign, while also noting that fake packs can be difficult to distinguish. The guidance gives no current dollar cutoff, and Pokémon says it does not track secondary-market values or maintain a reseller list; there is no official Pokémon price check that can establish a listing’s authenticity. Its buying guidance and product information do not establish a universal market price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Check whether the seller provides a clear product description and retailer details.
- Compare listing photos with official images of the product and its packaging.
- Treat a very low pack price as a warning, not as proof by itself.
Compare the product and packaging with official references
Use official product images to check whether the sealed product, deck, or packaging looks like the item being offered. Pokémon says becoming familiar with the appearance of its products and decks can help buyers avoid knockoffs. Be wary of mismatched, unclear, or missing images; a convincing photo alone does not prove that the item delivered will match it.

- 1 GX, EX, V, VMax, Full Art, Tag Team, or Secret Rare
Format details can help you notice an obvious mismatch, but they are not a complete authentication checklist. Pokémon describes preconstructed decks as fixed 60-card products, with decks sharing the same name containing the same cards. Booster packs are randomized; the support page describes a pack as containing 10 game cards, plus an Energy card and a code card. For sets before Scarlet & Violet, it says a pack guarantees at least one reverse-foil card. These references depend on product era and do not establish that every legitimate pack from every era has the same contents. See Pokémon’s product-format guidance.
Elite Trainer Boxes, collections, and tins may include promotional cards or accessories. Their booster packs are the same packs sold individually; buying a bundle does not mean better odds of pulling a particular card. Pokémon’s product guide describes these product types.

Use bright light as a screening check
For a loose card, hold it up to a bright light and look for unusual see-through quality. Pokémon Support says, “Counterfeit cards are often easy to see through if you hold them up to a bright light, so this is a good way to identify a fake.” The page presents this as a useful clue, not a definitive test that can clear every card. Pokémon Support’s counterfeit guidance was updated May 26, 2026.

Get an expert opinion when the clues are inconclusive
If the light check or product comparison raises doubts—or the purchase is valuable—pause rather than relying on one clue. Pokémon recommends asking a local shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate a potentially counterfeit card. Keep the listing, seller information, and purchase details so you can refer to them if you need to raise a concern.
Pokémon has reported receiving its highest number of instances of counterfeit sales from flea markets, but it provides no count or study period. That reported experience is not evidence that every flea-market seller or card is counterfeit; apply the same checks to any seller.
