When Wi-Fi, sound, or a printer stops working after a Linux installation, first check simple settings and whether Linux detects the device. Only then investigate drivers or firmware. The right fix depends on your distribution, its version, and the specific hardware—there is no universal package or command sequence for all three problems.
Start by identifying what is failing
Separate a device that is missing from one that Linux detects but cannot use. For Wi-Fi, ask whether the network is absent or whether a connection attempt fails. For sound, check whether the output device is listed and selected. For a printer, determine whether it appears in the printer setup panel. These distinctions help you avoid changing drivers when the cause is a setting, connection, or authentication problem.

- Check basic state first: power, mute, airplane mode, cables, and whether the network or device is available.
- Look for the relevant interface, controller, or printer in your desktop’s settings.
- Before installing a driver, firmware, or package, identify your Linux distribution and release and, where possible, the hardware model.
Fix Wi-Fi problems
If your network is missing
- Check that Wi-Fi is enabled and airplane mode is off. Move closer to the router and confirm that the network is not hidden.
- If other devices can see the network but your Linux computer cannot, check whether Linux detects its wireless interface. Ubuntu’s wireless troubleshooting guide organizes checks from initial settings through hardware, router connection, and modem/router diagnostics.
- If the wireless interface is absent or unusable, investigate the driver and firmware for your exact wireless hardware and distribution release. A network management app cannot make an unsupported or undetected interface work on its own.
If the network is visible but connection fails
Re-enter the password carefully, then consider weak signal or a router problem. Check whether other devices can connect to the same network. This comparison helps distinguish a computer-specific problem from one affecting the router or internet connection.

On Fedora, NetworkManager is the primary network configuration service. Its documentation gives nmcli device status to inspect devices and this example for connecting to a network: nmcli device wifi connect SSID password PASSWORD. Replace the example values with your network name and password. These are Fedora-context instructions, not a universal Linux fix. Fedora’s NetworkManager documentation notes that a relevant driver must be installed for an interface to work and that additional driver or firmware may be needed; it recommends rebooting after installing either. The Fedora Project Wiki also cautions that “Many manufacturers of modems and wireless devices provide limited support for Linux.”

Fix sound problems
If there is no sound
- Check system volume and mute, the application’s own volume and mute, and any laptop mute key or physical switch.
- For external headphones or speakers, check that they are powered on and connected properly.
- Open your sound settings, select the output connected to your speakers or headphones, and test the available outputs. A computer may list several devices, including outputs that are not connected to the equipment you are using.
Ubuntu’s sound troubleshooting guide recommends checking these basic causes and the selected output before investigating drivers.
If the right output is not listed
Identify the audio controller before looking for a driver. On Ubuntu, the guide recommends lspci to check whether an audio controller is listed, or lspci -v for more detail. Then use support instructions for your distribution and device. Do not install an ALSA, PipeWire, PulseAudio, or firmware package based only on the symptom; the appropriate step depends on the hardware and distribution.

If the internal audio hardware remains unusable after diagnosis, an external USB sound card is one possible workaround mentioned in Ubuntu’s guide. Check the specific adapter’s chipset and Linux support before buying one; this is not a routine fix for mute, a wrong output selection, or a correctable configuration problem.

Fix printer problems
Set up a USB printer
- Turn the printer on and check its USB cable and connection.
- Allow the desktop to detect it. If it does not install automatically, open Settings, go to Printers, choose Add Printer, and select the detected device.
- Print a test page to confirm setup and review the available printer options.
Set up a network printer
- Open Settings and go to Printers, then choose Add Printer.
- If the printer is not discovered automatically but you know its network address, enter that address in the add-printer dialog.
- If it still does not appear or cannot print, check whether a driver for that printer model is needed. Print a test page when setup is complete.
Ubuntu’s printer setup guide describes these steps. Printer options and driver requirements can vary; the guide does not establish that every printer needs a vendor driver, CUPS administration, or a particular discovery protocol.

When to seek device-specific instructions
Once basic settings and connections are ruled out, use the exact distribution release and hardware model to find relevant support instructions. Driver availability, firmware, commands, and settings screens vary. Avoid copying a package-manager command or firmware name intended for another distribution or device: the wrong instructions may not apply and can distract from the actual cause.
