That distinction helps identify whether to focus on Windows and its wireless adapter or on the router, modem, or internet service. Work through the steps below in order; save driver changes and Network reset for later.
Start with Windows’ basic connection checks
- Run the troubleshooter. Open the Get Help app and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Microsoft says it diagnoses common problems and attempts to fix them. Check whether the taskbar now shows a connection.
- Confirm Wi-Fi is on. Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and the PC is connected to the intended network. Open Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode and turn Airplane mode off.
- Reconnect to a saved network. If Windows will not join a network it has connected to before, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the network, choose Forget, then connect again and enter its password.
- Restart the network equipment. Restart the modem and wireless router using their manufacturer’s instructions. This temporarily disconnects everyone using the network. If the modem and router are one combined device, one restart is generally enough.
Wi-Fi and internet access are not the same thing: a PC can connect to the router’s local wireless network while the router has no working connection to the internet.

Find out whether the problem is this PC or the network
Connect another phone or computer to the same Wi-Fi network and try to use the internet.
- Other devices also fail: check the modem and router status. If the provider’s connection is down, contact your internet service provider. A Windows setting on one PC is less likely to explain a failure across several devices.
- Only the Windows 11 PC fails: focus on that PC’s settings, wireless adapter, and adapter driver.
If signal is weak, move closer to the router and try again. If the router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi and the PC supports both, try the other band. A band may be unavailable because of the router’s configuration or the adapter’s capabilities.

If Windows says “Connected, no internet”
This status means the PC is connected to Wi-Fi but Windows has not confirmed access to the wider internet. Microsoft explains that Windows checks by making a small HTTP request to an internet server; if it receives no information, Windows can report no internet. The message alone does not identify the cause.
- Check whether other devices can get online on the same network, then check the router or provider if they cannot.
- Check proxy settings if this PC uses a proxy. An incorrect proxy can prevent internet access even when the Wi-Fi link works.
- Check the PC’s IP address. A 169.254.x.x address can indicate that Windows did not obtain an address from the router when the PC is not configured to use a static address.
- Renew the address and clear DNS cache using the commands below if the basic checks do not help. Do not change DNS settings at random; first check the connection’s current configuration and follow Microsoft’s documented TCP/IP settings guidance.
Run Windows network commands after simpler checks
If reconnecting and restarting have not resolved the problem, run Microsoft’s command sequence from an administrator Command Prompt. To open one, search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and approve the prompt. Enter each command and press Enter before moving to the next:

netsh winsock resetresets the Windows Sockets catalog used by network applications.netsh int ip resetresets TCP/IP settings.ipconfig /releasereleases the PC’s current IP address lease.ipconfig /renewasks the network for an IP address lease again.ipconfig /flushdnsclears the DNS resolver cache, so Windows can look up addresses afresh.
Check connectivity after the sequence. If the commands do not help, continue with the symptom that matches your problem rather than repeating them.

- Check for a physical wireless switch or key. Some PCs have a hardware switch or keyboard control that disables wireless.
- Check the adapter in Device Manager. Find the wireless adapter and confirm it is enabled. If Device Manager shows a problem code, note it and compare the installed driver’s version and date with the current driver offered by the PC manufacturer.
- Restart WLAN AutoConfig. This Windows service manages wireless connections. If it is stopped, restarting it may restore Wi-Fi scanning and connection functions.
- Check frequency compatibility. If the adapter is detected but cannot see any networks, verify that it supports the frequency band broadcast by the router.
- Install the correct PC-maker driver if Windows does not detect the adapter. Get the driver for the exact computer model and Windows version from its manufacturer. If this PC is offline, download it on another computer and transfer it using a USB flash drive.
Fix “Wi-Fi connection is dropping frequently”
- Check whether the signal is weak where the drops occur; test closer to the router.
- Look for heavy downloads or other bandwidth-intensive apps running on the PC or network.
- Check the adapter’s power-management settings if disconnections happen repeatedly. Power-saving behavior can affect a wireless adapter.
- If several devices drop from the network, investigate the router. Any router channel change requires access to its administration settings and should follow the router maker’s instructions.
Fix “Connected to Internet but very slow speed”
First check signal strength and location, then see whether bandwidth-heavy apps are active. Test another device on the same network: if it is also slow, investigate the router or provider rather than assuming the Windows PC is at fault. Consider router maintenance or replacement only when the checks point to the router.

Fix a Wi-Fi password that Windows rejects
Recheck the password and confirm you are selecting the intended network. If the credentials are correct but the PC still cannot join, check the router’s wireless configuration. Avoid a router factory reset unless necessary: it can erase settings and require the network to be configured again.
Reinstall the adapter driver only if earlier steps fail
If the problem began after a recent update, Microsoft suggests considering an adapter driver uninstall and reinstall. Before removing it, obtain the correct driver for the PC from its manufacturer and keep a copy somewhere accessible. Windows may reinstall the adapter driver after a restart, but having the backup provides a recovery route if it does not.

Use Network reset as a last resort
Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters with default settings after the PC restarts. It can mean setting up VPN software or Hyper-V virtual switches again, and known network profiles can change to Public. Use it only after less disruptive troubleshooting has failed.
