If your dishwasher or dishes smell like “wet dog,” don’t assume the drain hose is automatically to blame. Start by cleaning accessible food residue, then check whether dirty water is returning or failing to drain. A wet-dog odor is a description, not a confirmed diagnosis; the timing of the smell and what you see in the machine can help you choose the next check.
What a wet-dog smell can—and cannot—tell you
People use phrases such as “wet dog” and “pond water” to describe unpleasant dishwasher odors, including in a Reddit discussion. Those descriptions are useful for identifying the symptom, but they do not establish a technical cause. Manufacturer guidance points to food residue and mildew as possible sources. Dirty water collecting in the tub between uses can also indicate a drainage or backflow problem.

Pay attention to when the odor appears: after a wash, after the machine has been sitting, or only on dishes. That timing is a practical way to organize your checks, not a validated diagnostic test.
Start with residue you can safely reach
- Turn the dishwasher off. Check the owner’s manual before removing parts or reaching into the filter or sump area.
- Clean the removable filter, if your model has one. Remove food residue as the manual directs. Take care: debris in the filter area may be sharp.
- Inspect only accessible areas. Check around the sump or pump inlet for visible debris, and look for blocked spray-arm jets. GE advises checking these areas when addressing food or mildew odors; LG also identifies food residue in filters as relevant to cleaning.
- Clean the interior according to the appliance instructions. A dishwasher-cleaning product may help with residue-related odor when used as directed, but it will not fix a blocked drain, damaged hose, or water flowing back into the machine.

Check whether water is draining—or coming back
Look for dirty water that remains or builds up between uses. GE Appliances says this can be associated with an improperly installed drain hose, and advises that the hose have a high drain loop or connect to an air gap. A small amount of water around the filter area can be normal on some models, so use your owner’s manual to judge what is expected rather than treating any visible water as a fault.
As GE Appliances puts it, “The drain hose must have a high drain loop or be connected to an air gap.” The required arrangement depends on the appliance and installation instructions; these sources do not establish one universal hose height.

Inspect the under-sink drain connection
- Look for a kinked, pinched, or damaged hose. A restriction can interfere with drainage. Do not keep using a visibly damaged hose as though cleaning the tub will fix it.
- Check the sink or disposal connection. An obstruction there, or at an air gap if one is installed, can affect drainage.
- If a garbage disposer was recently installed, check the dishwasher and disposer instructions for the required connection. A knockout plug left in the disposer inlet can prevent the dishwasher from draining.

When to get help
Consult the model’s support service or a qualified appliance technician if the dishwasher still drains poorly after basic checks, the hose or another component is damaged, or the odor and drainage problem persist. Avoid treating an online suggestion—including a Reddit comment—as confirmation that the hose is the cause.
