How to Fix Webroot SecureAnywhere Blocking a Safe App or Website

A practical, safety-first guide to Webroot SecureAnywhere blocks: website exclusions, quarantined files, process and firewall checks, false-positive reporting, and platform differences.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify what Webroot SecureAnywhere blocked. A browser warning is handled by Web Shield or Web Threat Shield; a stopped Windows program may be quarantined, listed in Block/Allow Files, stopped by process control, or denied a network connection by the firewall. Use the control that matches the symptom, verify the file or site independently, and keep protection enabled whenever possible.

The menu names vary between SecureAnywhere editions, Total Protection, operating systems and software versions. If a path below is missing, use the labels in your installed product and contact Webroot Support rather than disabling protection broadly.

Match the symptom to the blocking layer

Do not start by adding a blanket exception. Record what happened and then work on the layer that produced it. Webroot can make separate decisions about a URL, an executable, a running process and a network connection, so changing one control may have no effect on another.

You are unsure whether the detection is wrong Potential false positive Webroot’s false-positive submission workflow Do not restore a quarantined item merely because it is inconvenient

Record the evidence before changing a setting

Write down the exact website address or the complete application filename and path. Copy the alert text if possible, and note whether the item was quarantined, blocked, or simply unable to connect. Also record your operating system and whether the installed product is SecureAnywhere, Total Protection, or another Webroot interface. Webroot’s false-positive instructions ask for the operating system and filename, and those details also make a support case much easier to diagnose.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • For a website, check the spelling of the domain and whether the warning appears in every browser or only one.
  • For a program, note its publisher, digital-signature information, download source and version.
  • Do not trust an “allow” request delivered by an unexpected pop-up, email attachment or cracked-software installer.
  • Keep the Webroot alert, event time and any error code. Those details can distinguish a scan detection from a connection problem.
  • Write down what happened immediately before the block, such as an application update, browser extension change or new download.
  • Change only one control at a time and test the same action after each change. Otherwise you may not know which exception altered the result.

When Webroot blocks a website

Check SecureAnywhere’s Web Shield settings

In the documented SecureAnywhere settings interface, open Advanced Settings > Firewall / Web Shield. The page includes controls for Enable Web Shield, the browser extension, malicious-site blocking, anti-phishing and the filtering driver. These protections are enabled by default in the documented configuration. Leave them enabled unless Webroot Support specifically directs a controlled diagnostic test.

A block page does not prove that a site is malicious, but it does mean Webroot’s web protection made a risk decision. Before creating an exception, try the site’s official alternate address, update the browser and confirm that the URL was typed correctly. If only one browser is affected, check that browser’s Webroot extension and restart it after any change.

Compare the result in a second browser only as a diagnostic. Do not use an unprotected browser as a permanent workaround. If every browser receives the same warning, the decision is more likely to be at the Web Shield or Web Threat Shield layer. If one browser alone fails, its extension, cached state or browser-specific settings deserve attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the documented Total Protection site exclusion when it is available

Webroot documents a separate workflow for the Total Protection interface. Open Web Threat Shield settings, choose Manage Exclusion, add the trusted site, and select Apply. Webroot says an entry there prevents its Malware Scanner from generating a block page for that site.

This path is specific to the documented Total Protection screen. Do not assume every SecureAnywhere edition has the same exclusion control or that an exclusion in one product applies to another device. If you do not see Manage Exclusion, do not substitute a global shutdown; use the Web Shield labels present in your version or ask Webroot Support which control corresponds to the alert.

Limit an exception to the exact site

Use the narrowest entry possible. An exception for a particular HTTPS hostname is safer than disabling protection for all websites, browsers or traffic. Review the list later and remove an entry if the site changes ownership, begins redirecting to unrelated domains, or no longer needs access.

Before allowing a site, verify it independently through the organization’s known contact information or a previously trusted bookmark. Look for spelling tricks in the domain and unexpected redirects. A familiar brand name in a URL is not proof that the current page is genuine, and an exception can prevent the normal block page from appearing.

When Webroot blocks an application or file

Inspect quarantine and Block/Allow Files

In SecureAnywhere on Windows, open PC Security > Block/Allow Files. The list can include quarantined items. A known executable can be assigned Allow, Block or Monitor. Webroot states that these choices override its default scanning and shielding behavior, so they are powerful exceptions rather than harmless labels.

  1. Locate the exact executable in the list, checking its full path and filename rather than relying on a similar name.
  2. Confirm its source and publisher. If it came from an official developer download, compare its signature or published checksum when one is available.
  3. If you are certain the file is legitimate and required, choose the appropriate disposition and save the change.
  4. Restart the application and watch for a new alert. If the behavior changes, record the result instead of adding more exceptions.

Allow tells Webroot to permit the file despite its normal decision. Monitor is useful when you need to observe behavior while retaining visibility, but it is not a guarantee that every related component or network request will be accepted. Block prevents execution or other protected activity. Do not select Allow simply because a program is popular or because another user says it is safe; verify the particular file on your computer.

Check whether the program has multiple executables. A launcher may start a separate updater, service or helper from another folder. Allowing only the visible launcher may leave the helper blocked, while allowing every file in the program’s directory creates a much broader override than necessary. Resolve each alert based on its exact path and role.

Restore from quarantine only when you are certain

Webroot’s false-positive guidance explicitly cautions that it recommends restoring a file only when you are certain it is safe. A quarantined item may be the correct detection, and restoring it can reintroduce an active threat. If the evidence is inconclusive, leave the file isolated and submit it for review instead of forcing it to run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not download a replacement from an unverified mirror simply because the original was quarantined. Use the developer’s official distribution channel, verify the publisher and compare a vendor-provided checksum when available. If a newly downloaded copy is detected in the same way, report the exact filename and source rather than repeatedly restoring copies.

When the app opens but does not work

Review Control Active Processes

Webroot’s process controls are separate from file disposition. Open PC Security and review Control Active Processes (the exact navigation can differ by version). The process guide defines Allow, Monitor and Block. Check whether the program or one of its helper processes was set to Block or is waiting in Monitor.

Do not block a process unless you are certain it is non-essential and unwanted. Many applications use a launcher, updater, service or helper process whose name differs from the visible program. If you are unsure which process belongs to the application, capture the names and ask Webroot Support rather than changing several entries at once.

A process setting applies to the running component, not automatically to every file from the same publisher. If an update changes the executable name or location, the new process may receive a fresh decision. Record the path shown in the process list so support can distinguish the application from a similarly named system process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the firewall separately

An executable can be allowed to run and still be unable to connect. Webroot’s PC troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the firewall when an application is not functioning. Review the application’s network permission and any rule for its updater, service or helper. A file exception in Block/Allow Files does not automatically authorize every outbound connection.

Test one change at a time: first confirm that the program launches, then test sign-in, updates or the specific online feature that failed. If the program works offline but fails only when connecting, concentrate on firewall and network rules rather than repeatedly changing file scanning settings.

Note the exact network symptom: a timeout, an authentication error, a failed update or a message that the server cannot be reached. This helps separate a firewall decision from an account problem or an outage at the application’s server. If the same program fails with Webroot shut down and with it running, Webroot is unlikely to be the cause.

Submit a suspected false positive to Webroot

If you have good evidence that Webroot detected a legitimate file or site, use Webroot’s false-positive submission process. Webroot asks for the operating system and filename; select False Positive detection as the submission reason when that option is presented. Include the exact alert, file path, download source, application version and the steps that reproduce the block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a website, include the complete URL and explain whether the warning appears in one browser or all browsers. For a file, include the publisher and whether it was quarantined, blocked or merely monitored. Screenshots or copied alert text can preserve wording that is difficult to reproduce later.

Vendor review is the safer route when you cannot independently establish that a file is clean. It also avoids creating a permanent local override that could hide a later, modified version of the program. Keep the item quarantined while waiting unless Webroot gives you a specific restoration instruction.

Use shutdown only as a brief diagnostic test

Webroot’s PC FAQ describes temporarily shutting down protection to determine whether the problem persists, but active protection is off during that test. Treat this as a short, controlled diagnostic—not a workaround.

  1. Save your work and close unrelated applications.
  2. Shut down Webroot only long enough to reproduce the one problem you are investigating.
  3. Do not browse to unknown sites, open attachments, install software or perform sensitive transactions while protection is off.
  4. Turn Webroot back on immediately after the test.
  5. If the problem occurs only while Webroot is running, open a support ticket and include the error, operating system, product interface and every step already tried.

If the application still fails while Webroot is shut down, the cause is elsewhere—such as the application itself, Windows permissions, its account or its server—and leaving antivirus protection disabled will not fix it. A successful launch during the test proves only that Webroot may be involved; it does not identify which file, process or firewall rule caused the conflict.

Windows, Mac and Android differences

The detailed troubleshooting paths above are Windows-oriented. Webroot’s false-positive instructions refer to Windows, Mac and Android, but that does not establish that those platforms expose identical menus or controls. A Mac or Android installation may use different names, permissions and quarantine behavior.

Follow the labels shown by your installed version and identify the platform in any support request. The Total Protection Manage Exclusion workflow is documented for that interface; SecureAnywhere’s settings guide instead documents Advanced Settings > Firewall / Web Shield. A missing menu is a version or product difference, not a reason to disable all protection.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a file exception for a website: file controls cannot correct a Web Shield decision.
  • Using a site exclusion for an executable: a browser exception does not release a quarantined file or change process control.
  • Allowing an entire folder: verify the specific executable and helper instead of creating a broad override.
  • Restoring first and verifying later: Webroot recommends restoration only when you are certain the item is safe.
  • Changing several settings at once: make one controlled change, retest, and record the result.
  • Leaving shutdown enabled: active protection is absent during the test, so restore it immediately.
  • Assuming identical menus across products: Total Protection and SecureAnywhere document different paths.

A safe decision checklist

  • Website warning: verify the URL, then check Web Shield or the Total Protection Web Threat Shield exclusion screen.
  • File detected or quarantined: inspect PC Security > Block/Allow Files and verify the exact file before choosing Allow.
  • Program starts but a function fails: inspect Control Active Processes and then the firewall.
  • Uncertain file: leave it quarantined and submit a false-positive report.
  • Need to prove a conflict: perform only a brief shutdown test, restore protection immediately and contact support with the results.

These controls are not interchangeable. A website exception will not repair a quarantined executable, and allowing an executable will not necessarily fix a blocked network connection. Matching the remedy to the blocking layer is what restores access without unnecessarily removing Webroot’s protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Webroot blocking a website I know is safe?

Web Shield or Web Threat Shield may have classified the URL as risky, or the browser extension may be involved. Verify the spelling and ownership of the address first. If your Total Protection interface shows Web Threat Shield settings, use Manage Exclusion for the exact site and select Apply. If that control is absent, use the Web Shield labels in your edition or contact Webroot Support rather than disabling protection globally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I allow a program that Webroot quarantined?

Open PC Security > Block/Allow Files, locate the exact executable and verify its publisher, source and path. Choose Allow only when you are certain the file is legitimate and needed. Webroot warns that restoration is appropriate only when you are certain the item is safe; otherwise leave it quarantined and submit a false-positive report.

What is the difference between Allow, Monitor and Block?

In file and process controls, Allow permits the item despite the normal decision, Monitor lets you observe behavior without treating it as fully trusted, and Block prevents the protected activity. These settings override or influence default shielding, so they should be used for a verified file or process, not as trial-and-error exceptions.

The app launches but cannot connect. What should I change?

Check the firewall and application network rules separately from Block/Allow Files. Review rules for the main executable, updater, service and helper processes. A file exception does not automatically authorize network access. Test one change and then retest the specific sign-in, update or online feature that failed.

Should I turn off Webroot to get around the block?

Only use shutdown as a brief, controlled diagnostic if necessary. Protection is inactive during the test, so do not browse to unknown sites, open attachments or install software. Turn Webroot back on immediately. If the issue disappears only while it is off, report the evidence to Webroot Support instead of leaving protection disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I find Manage Exclusion?

Webroot documents that workflow for the Total Protection Web Threat Shield interface. SecureAnywhere’s settings guide instead documents Advanced Settings > Firewall / Web Shield, and other editions or platforms may use different labels. Follow the controls displayed in your installation and ask support which setting matches the alert.

Does allowing a file also allow its network connection?

No. File disposition, active-process decisions and firewall permissions address different behaviors. An executable may run while its updater or service is blocked from connecting, so inspect the firewall separately.

What information should I send with a false-positive report?

Include the operating system, exact filename and path, alert text, publisher, download source, application version and steps that reproduce the block. Select False Positive detection when that reason is offered. For a website, include the complete URL and explain which browsers show the warning.

The Bottom Line

Identify whether Webroot blocked the URL, file, process or network connection before changing anything. Use the narrowest documented control, verify the item independently, keep uncertain files quarantined, and send suspected false positives to Webroot Support. A short shutdown test can confirm a conflict, but it is not a safe permanent fix.
