Start by separating a connection failure from a browser-compatibility failure. If the PSP cannot open any page, repair its WLAN connection and saved access-point settings first. If other pages work but one site does not, clear the browser’s stored data, check View Settings, and adjust display controls. When a simple page opens but a current site fails on HTTPS, scripts, layout, or memory, the stock PSP browser may simply lack the protocols and rendering support that site requires.
The sequence below moves from reversible checks to the hard limit of the built-in browser, with separate cautions for PSP model differences and homebrew alternatives.

Identify the failure before changing settings

Do not assume that every HTTPS page is unusable or that a particular error code has one universal meaning. The symptom pattern is more useful than a guessed code.
1. Confirm that the PSP is actually connected to Wi-Fi
If no site can be reached, treat this as a network problem before changing rendering options. Sony’s PSP-3002/3003 troubleshooting guidance lists the following checks; other PSP revisions can have slightly different menus, so use the manual for your exact model when labels differ.

Check the physical WLAN controls
- Slide the PSP’s WLAN switch to the on position.
- As a diagnostic, turn off WLAN Power Save. Power-saving behavior can reduce radio reliability while you are testing a marginal connection.
- Move the console close to the wireless access point. A short-distance test distinguishes a weak signal from a browser problem.
Verify the saved connection profile
- Open the PSP network settings and select the saved wireless connection you intend to use.
- Confirm the network name and security details are still correct. A changed router password or security mode can leave an old profile saved but unusable.
- Check whether the access point uses MAC-address filtering. If it does, the PSP must be allowed by that filter.
- Consider nearby radio interference. Temporarily testing in another room or with other wireless equipment moved away can reveal a signal problem.
The browser can either select the most recently used connection automatically or prompt you to choose a connection each time it starts. If the wrong saved network keeps being selected, set the browser to ask for a connection manually and choose the verified profile.
What a successful network test tells you
Once the PSP can reach a simple, lightweight page, the wireless path is working well enough to investigate browser state and page compatibility. A working Wi-Fi indicator alone is not proof that DNS, authentication, or the selected access point is correct; the page-load test is the useful boundary.
2. Remove stale cache, cookies, and authentication data
Old files or stored session information can make a page behave differently from a first visit. Sony documents deletion commands in the browser menu.

Clear the cache
- Open the browser and press Triangle to display its menu.
- Choose Tools, then the command to delete the cache.
- Refresh the page and test it again.
The cache-size choices are Do Not Use, 512 KB, 1024 KB, and 2048 KB. When the selected limit is reached, the browser removes older files automatically. A larger limit can retain more downloaded material, but changing it does not add support for newer web protocols or scripting.
Delete cookies or authentication information only when needed
If clearing the cache changes nothing, use the same Tools area to delete cookies or authentication information and retry. This can remove remembered sign-ins, preferences, and other site state, so it is more disruptive than clearing the cache alone. If you need a saved session, note that you may have to authenticate again.

After deleting stored data, perform a full refresh rather than judging the result from an already displayed page. If the same site still fails while other sites open, continue to View Settings instead of repeatedly deleting data.
3. Check View Settings for content and memory problems
Open Tools > Settings > View Settings. These switches control what the PSP requests or attempts to draw; they cannot turn the console into a modern browser.

Set Images to On when pictures are missing. Sony notes that turning Images off also turns Animation off, so an apparently missing animation may be a consequence of the image setting rather than a separate fault.
JavaScript
Enable JavaScript for pages that require client-side scripts for menus, forms, or navigation. The PSP’s JavaScript implementation is limited, so enabling the option may allow a basic script to run without making a complex application functional.
Flash and the PSP-1000 requirement
The browser includes a Flash setting, but PSP-1000 systems have an additional prerequisite. On that model, Sony requires Flash Player to be enabled under System Settings and the Internet activation procedure to be completed before Flash content can be used. This requirement does not make newer HTML5 pages work; it applies only to the older Flash feature.

Conserve Memory
For a page containing a large amount of data, turn on Conserve Memory. Sony describes this mode as using less memory to display data-heavy pages while reducing image quality. It is a trade-off: it can help a page get farther through loading, but it is not a general speed boost and does not fix unsupported encryption, scripts, or layout engines.

4. Correct text and layout with the View menu
When a page opens but looks wrong, use the browser’s View menu rather than changing network settings.
Display mode
Switch to another display mode when columns overlap, content is off-screen, or a page is difficult to navigate. The mode changes how the existing page is fitted to the PSP display; it does not rewrite incompatible markup.
Text size
Increase or decrease text size to make a readable page fit the screen. A different size can also expose links that appeared to be missing because they were positioned outside the visible area.

Character encoding
If letters appear as boxes, question marks, or unrelated symbols, specify a different character encoding from the View controls. Encoding fixes interpretation of text bytes; it cannot repair a broken script or a layout that depends on unsupported CSS.

That warning is important: a correct display setting can improve presentation of a compatible page, but it is not a promise that every current site will render.

After the connection, stored data, content switches, and display controls have been checked, compare the failing site with a very simple page. If the simple page works but the target site fails with an SSL or certificate message, a highly complex layout, missing scripts, or a memory failure, the problem is likely compatibility rather than a bad setting.
The PSP Developer Wiki’s technical reference attributes this pattern to the stock browser’s legacy TLS and root-certificate support, limited JavaScript, and constrained memory budget. Those details come from that secondary reference, not from Sony’s manual. They explain why clearing a cache cannot make a site that requires newer encryption or a modern JavaScript engine become usable.
Signs that another setting change will not help
- A certificate or secure-connection failure occurs before the page content appears.
- The page depends on a large client-side application and only a blank frame or partial shell loads.
- Text appears, but essential controls never respond even with JavaScript enabled.
- Different display modes and encodings change appearance but not the underlying failure.
- Conserve Memory allows a little more of the page to appear, yet the page still cannot complete its required functions.
At that point, use a simpler, older-style version of the service if one exists, or access the site from a device with a current browser. Do not infer that every secure site fails, and do not attribute a particular universal error number to the PSP when the documented material does not establish one.
6. Advanced alternatives: homebrew browsers
Owners willing to modify their consoles may encounter two alternatives described by the PSP Developer Wiki: Opera Mini running through PSPKVM and Tilefinch. Neither is a routine fix for a stock PSP, and current operation was not independently verified.
Opera Mini through PSPKVM
Opera Mini historically rendered pages through a server-side proxy. That design could reduce work on the PSP itself, but it depends on old Opera services continuing to accept the client. If those services no longer support the connection, installing the application cannot restore access.
Tilefinch
The same reference lists Tilefinch as requiring custom firmware and a compatible 64 MB memory mode. That limits it to PSP models and configurations that provide those conditions. Custom-firmware installation also introduces setup and recovery risks that do not exist when changing a cache or View Setting.
Decide whether the trade-off is worthwhile
- Likely benefit: a different rendering path may handle some pages the stock browser cannot.
- Additional effort: PSPKVM or custom-firmware setup is substantially more involved than changing a browser option.
- Compatibility uncertainty: model support, firmware state, and external proxy services can determine whether the alternative works.
- Risk: modifying firmware is not reversible in the same simple way as clearing cache or restoring a display setting.
Use these options only if you understand the model and firmware requirements and have a recovery plan. They should not be presented as guaranteed fixes.
A practical decision path
- Test reachability: if no page opens, check WLAN switch, WLAN Power Save, distance, saved connection details, MAC filtering, and interference.
- Choose the right saved network: change the browser to manual connection selection if automatic selection is choosing the wrong profile.
- Reset stored state: Triangle > Tools, delete cache, refresh, and only then consider cookies or authentication information.
- Check requested content: Tools > Settings > View Settings; enable Images and JavaScript as required, and verify Flash prerequisites on a PSP-1000.
- Reduce memory pressure: enable Conserve Memory for very large pages, accepting reduced image quality.
- Adjust presentation: use View to change display mode, text size, or character encoding.
- Classify the result: if simple pages work but the target still fails on modern security, scripting, layout, or memory demands, treat it as a browser-compatibility limit.
What each remedy can and cannot fix

Final troubleshooting checklist
- Can the PSP open any lightweight page?
- Is the WLAN switch on, and did a close-range test succeed?
- Did you verify the saved network rather than relying on automatic selection?
- Is MAC filtering or radio interference blocking the access point?
- Did you clear the cache before deleting cookies or authentication information?
- Are Images and, where needed, JavaScript enabled?
- For a PSP-1000, was Flash enabled in System Settings and activated online?
- Did Conserve Memory help a large page, with the expected reduction in image quality?
- Did a display mode, text-size, or encoding change correct a presentation-only problem?
- Does the failing site require current TLS, certificates, JavaScript, or memory beyond the stock browser?
If the last question is yes, the honest fix is to use a simpler version of the site or a newer browsing device. Sony’s warning that some pages may not display properly is a compatibility boundary, not an indication that you missed one hidden PSP setting.
