Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To fix VR stutter, first find out whether the missed frames come from the game rendering too slowly, the compositor or PC-streaming path, or a physical connection or tracking problem. Check frame timings and dropped-frame counters while reproducing the issue before changing graphics, Link settings, or hardware. The specific steps below focus on SteamVR and Meta PC-VR/Quest Link; menus and diagnostics vary by headset and runtime.
Why are my VR games stuttering?
VR has a deadline for every displayed frame. If the game misses it, the compositor may show an older image and apply rotational reprojection to account for headset movement. That can preserve some apparent motion, but persistent misses can look like judder and add latency.

Meta’s Horizon OS developer documentation, updated March 9, 2026, gives these frame budgets for its documented refresh rates:
| Refresh rate | Time available per frame |
|---|---|
| 72 Hz | 13.9 ms |
| 90 Hz | 11.1 ms |
| 120 Hz | 8.3 ms |
Compare measured frame time—not just GPU utilization—with the budget for the active refresh rate. Meta notes that reported GPU utilization can be below 100% even when GPU work is over budget. Its documentation illustrates a 72 Hz case where application GPU time is 18.05 ms against a 13.9 ms budget; that is an example, not a measurement of your headset.

How do I tell whether it is the game, compositor, or connection?
First note where and when the problem occurs. Does it happen in standalone play, only when connected to a PC, in one title, or across the headset dashboard and several titles? Those patterns help narrow the investigation, but none proves a cause by itself. Compare the same repeatable scene or workload before and after each change.
- Application/rendering evidence: The game’s CPU or GPU frame time exceeds its deadline, or application dropped-frame counts rise. This points toward work the game must complete.
- Compositor evidence: The game appears to meet its budget but compositor timings or compositor dropped-frame counts rise. Investigate the compositor/runtime path rather than assuming the game’s graphics settings are the cause.
- Connection or streaming evidence: The issue appears only over Link or another PC-streaming path, while the game’s render timing remains within budget. Check the relevant Link diagnostics and physical connection; wireless quality may also matter, but a timing pattern alone does not identify a specific network fault.
Use each platform’s own labels and counters; different overlays do not necessarily use “dropped frame” identically.
Where should I check frame timing?
SteamVR
- Open SteamVR > Settings > Performance and enable Display Frame Timing.
- Reproduce the stutter while watching the graph. Look for timing spikes and whether they align with the visible hitch.
- Steam Support says spikes probably relate to CPU performance and specifically calls out high CPU temperatures and case airflow as possible performance factors.
Steam’s frame-timing troubleshooting guide also lists connection checks, USB devices and ports, drivers, power settings, overclocking, and SteamVR tool-cache integrity.

Meta PC-VR and Quest Link
Open Oculus Debug Tool (ODT) from the Meta Horizon installation so its version matches the installed distribution. Its Performance HUD includes views such as Performance Summary, Latency Timing, App Render Timing, Compositor Render Timing, ASW Stats, Oculus Link, Oculus Link Detail, and Network Guardian Info. Meta documents an application frame-drop indicator and Link-related controls.
Use the application and compositor views to see which side is missing frames, and the Link views when the symptom is specific to streaming. Meta’s ODT documentation describes these HUD choices and configurable Link parameters.
How do I fix rendering-related frame drops?
If application GPU time exceeds the active frame budget, reduce the game’s most demanding graphics or render-resolution settings, then repeat the same scene and check the timings again. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it helped. If application GPU time is within budget while stale application frames persist, Meta’s guidance identifies the CPU as a likely bottleneck; GPU utilization by itself is not enough to rule a GPU problem in or out.

On supported Quest applications, Meta documents Dynamic Resolution, which can reduce render scale when dropped frames are detected. Thermal pressure can also dynamically reduce refresh rate on supported platform configurations, increasing the time available per frame. Availability depends on the device and application.

What should I check on the PC and in SteamVR?
Use Steam Support’s checks as a diagnostic list, not as a command to change every system setting. Make one change at a time and retest:

- 3-PORT USB TYPE A HUB — From webcams to controllers to drawing tablets, plug in more devices to the laptop without solely relying on its native USB ports
- Secure the headset, link box if present, and PC connections; try another applicable USB port and disconnect unused USB devices.
- Update the GPU driver, then retest the same workload.
- Return CPU and GPU overclocks to default while troubleshooting.
- Check CPU temperatures and case airflow if frame-time spikes correlate with heat or extended play.
- Verify SteamVR tool-cache integrity using Steam’s instructions.
- Review power configuration. Steam lists high-performance power and NVIDIA maximum-performance settings among its checks, but the relevant controls differ by system and can have trade-offs.
These steps can help isolate system or runtime conditions; they will not fix a game that simply exceeds its render budget unless the underlying limit changes.

When stutter occurs only while streaming from a PC, inspect the ODT Link and performance HUDs, confirm the PC app is current, and check the cable and ports if the connection is wired. ODT exposes codec, encoding-resolution, dynamic-bitrate, and bitrate controls. Treat these as diagnostic options: Meta warns that high bitrate values can cause instability, so do not raise bitrate to a maximum as a default fix. Observe the HUD and adjust only one relevant parameter at a time.

When should I suspect a cable, port, or wireless link?
For wired headsets or Link, reseat the connections and, where applicable, try another suitable port or known-compatible cable. Steam’s guidance supports checking secure connections and trying another USB port; it does not show that buying a cable will resolve CPU- or GPU-driven frame-time overload. Replace a cable only when the observations point to a physical connection problem, and confirm headset compatibility before choosing one.
For wireless streaming, network quality can be relevant, but the official guidance cited here does not establish a universal router, channel, or bitrate recipe. ODT’s Network Guardian Info view is a diagnostic facility, not proof that a network issue is causing a particular hitch.
Why am I dropping frames in SteamVR or Quest Link?
Use the platform’s separate timing and drop indicators while the symptom is happening. If the application counter rises and app frame time exceeds budget, start with game workload or CPU/GPU limits. If compositor timing or drops rise while the app stays within budget, investigate the runtime/compositor path. If only Link play is affected and render timings remain within budget, check Link diagnostics, software status, and the physical or wireless streaming path. Retest the same scene after each change; switching runtimes may alter a particular setup, but one person’s improvement is not a general recommendation.
