If a video won’t play, shows a black screen, stutters, freezes, skips, lags, or has no sound, first check whether the problem affects one file or every file. That distinction helps separate a file or codec issue from a Windows playback, display, or audio setting. The steps below are for Windows and Windows Media Player where specified; they are not universal instructions for VLC or other players, macOS, or Linux.
Start by narrowing down the symptom
Before changing settings, note the exact behavior and any error message or code. Then compare the affected file with other files and, if available, try that same file in another player. These comparisons help narrow the cause, but do not prove it: a problem with one file points toward its format or condition, while a problem across files may involve the player, Windows, or the audio or display setup.

Check whether Windows Media Player supports the file
A video file’s format and codecs determine whether a player can decode its picture and sound. Microsoft lists Windows video formats including MPEG-4 (H.264), H.263, VC-1, WMV, DV, VP8, and Motion JPEG. A file in another format may need an additional codec; Microsoft puts it this way: “If your file uses a different format, it might require an additional codec.” Microsoft’s Windows Media Player troubleshooting guide also lists optional extensions for MPEG-2, HEVC (H.265), VP9, AV1, and OGG formats.

For Windows Media Player stuttering, freezing, skipping, lagging, or no sound
Microsoft recommends checking compatibility and codecs, installing available Windows updates, and considering whether the Windows Media Player library is corrupted. Its troubleshooting steps include restoring the library and clearing the player’s history. Follow the instructions there for your Windows and player version rather than applying steps intended for a different release.
Check Windows video playback and multiple displays
For video apps covered by Windows’ video playback settings, open Settings > Apps > Video playback and review the available options. The exact settings may vary by Windows version and app.

If playback stalls or repeatedly starts and stops while using multiple monitors, check whether the displays use different refresh rates. Microsoft says, “Different refresh rates on multiple monitors can cause your video display to malfunction.” Its Windows video playback guidance suggests matching refresh rates. This is a targeted check for multi-display playback symptoms, not a general fix for every video problem.
For no sound, check the Windows audio output
A video can play without audible sound because Windows is sending audio to the wrong output or a control is muted. Check these in order:

- Select the intended output device in Windows sound settings.
- Check that speakers or headphones are connected and powered on.
- Raise the device volume and the app’s volume; make sure neither is muted.
- If sound is still missing or distorted, try turning off audio enhancements for the output device.
Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guidance covers output selection, connections, volume and mute controls, and audio enhancements. These checks apply to Windows audio; the controls in another operating system or player may differ.
If audio plays but the screen is black
A missing or unsupported video codec is one possible explanation, but it is not the only one. Microsoft documented a missing-codec case for Windows Media Player 11; that legacy-specific example does not establish the cause for every Windows Media Player version or third-party player. Check the file’s format and the player’s compatibility first, and note whether the same file displays video in another player before changing system settings.

When the problem continues
If only one file still fails, keep its exact error message and any available codec or format details. If the issue affects all files, record which player and Windows version are involved and whether it occurs with one display or multiple displays. That information makes further diagnosis more specific. The available Windows guidance does not establish registry edits, removing drivers, codec bundles, or buying hardware as first-line remedies.
