MacBooks do not have built-in touchscreens, so there is no setting that makes the display respond to finger taps. If you are touching the screen and nothing happens, that is expected. If the cursor will not move or click, troubleshoot the built-in trackpad instead: try moving the pointer with one finger, connect the MacBook to power, and contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the problem continues.
First, identify which input problem you have
Apple describes a MacBook’s built-in input devices as its keyboard and trackpad. You can also connect an external mouse or trackpad, but that does not turn the built-in display into a touchscreen. Apple’s guide to keyboards, mice, and trackpads explains the available input options.

- The display does not respond to taps: This is normal for a MacBook. Use the trackpad or a connected pointing device.
- The cursor does not move or the trackpad does not work properly: Follow the checks below.
Try these checks if the trackpad is not responding
Move the pointer with one finger
Place one finger on the trackpad and move it to control the pointer. Apple notes that two or more fingers do not move the pointer on a Mac laptop. Start with this simple check before changing settings or seeking repair. Apple’s troubleshooting steps for a pointer that does not move cover this check.
Connect the MacBook to power
A low-battery alert may be hidden from view. Connect the MacBook to its power adapter and check whether an alert appears. If you cannot see or interact with the alert, connecting an external keyboard may help reveal it, according to Apple’s troubleshooting guidance.

Use an external pointing device if you need to navigate
A wired or wireless mouse is an optional way to control the pointer while you use the MacBook or arrange service. Check that the device is compatible with your exact MacBook. A wired accessory may need a cable suited to the device or an adapter, depending on the Mac’s ports. Apple documents wired and wireless accessory setup in its keyboard, mouse, and trackpad guide. An external mouse does not add touch operation to the display.
When to arrange service
If one-finger pointer movement and connecting to power do not resolve a trackpad problem, Apple says a hardware issue may be involved. Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for help. See Apple’s Mac service and repair options.

Avoid opening the MacBook or replacing the trackpad based on generic instructions. Internal repair procedures and parts vary by model: for example, Apple’s MacBook Air (M2, 2022) Repair Manual, published April 8, 2025, includes model-specific trackpad troubleshooting and a trackpad/flex cable procedure. That manual is not a universal repair guide for other MacBooks. Check documentation for your exact model and use an appropriately qualified repair provider.
