Start at Settings > Storage to see what is using space, then review cleanup suggestions in Files > Clean. Remove only items you recognize and no longer need; take extra care with app data and backed-up photos. Motorola does not give one free-space amount that applies to every Android update, so use the estimate or error message shown on your phone.
1. Check what is taking up space
Open Settings > Storage and review the categories using the most space. Menu names and screens vary by Motorola model and software version; on some phones, the storage view may use older labels such as Internal shared storage.

Open the Files app and tap Clean. Review each suggested category, which may include downloads or unused apps, and choose whether to delete, move, or uninstall items. Suggestions are optional; remove only files or apps you no longer need. Motorola’s current storage instructions describe this cleanup flow and the available choices. Manage phone storage

If no suggestions appear, check Files settings for controls related to suggestion notifications. Availability and labels can vary by software version.
3. Remove files or apps you no longer need
In Files, browse categories such as apps, images, and videos. You can delete specific files or uninstall apps you no longer use. Before deleting a file, open or preview it when possible to confirm it is not something you want to keep.

Clear cache only when you need to
For an app using a lot of space, open its storage controls—typically through Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage & cache—and choose Clear cache if that option is available. Clearing cache removes cached files; an app may recreate them later.
Do not confuse Clear cache with Clear storage
Clear storage removes saved app data, not just temporary cache. Depending on the app, that data may include drafts, downloads, offline files, or other information. Check the app and preserve anything important before using this option. Motorola documents the two controls separately. Manage phone storage

4. Make room without losing photos
Review large photos and videos, but do not assume that deleting a backed-up photo in Google Photos removes only the copy stored on your phone. Motorola’s user guide warns that deleting photos in Google Photos can also remove them from your Google account. Motorola user guide
On supported phones, Storage manager can automatically remove local copies of photos and videos after they have been backed up. Depending on the interface, its choices may include 30, 60, or 90 days. Confirm that the items are backed up and that this option appears on your phone before enabling it. Manage phone storage

5. Move eligible media to a microSD card, if supported
A microSD card is an optional way to move eligible photos, videos, or music off internal storage. First confirm that your exact Motorola model supports a card and follow its instructions for moving files. Motorola’s portable-storage guidance says apps cannot be stored on a portable SD card, and card support and options differ by model. Using an SD card on my phone

After cleanup, return to the update screen and try again. Motorola’s update guidance recommends Wi-Fi when available and enough battery charge for the update. It does not set a universal free-space threshold, so follow the space estimate or error message shown by your phone and any instructions for your specific model. Motorola edge+ (2023) user guide

Why the steps may look different
Motorola storage interfaces vary across models and software versions. Current instructions use Files > Clean and app-specific storage controls; older screens may instead show Settings > Storage, Internal shared storage, or Cached data. Storage manager and SD-card features are also model-dependent. If a label or option is missing, use the storage controls available on your phone rather than assuming every Motorola has the same menu.
