If TikTok is stuttering, freezing, or responding slowly on Android or iPhone, start by updating the app, then check whether the slowdown is limited to TikTok or follows your connection or phone. Work through these nine checks in order; none guarantees a fix, but each helps narrow down what to try next.
1. Update TikTok
TikTok’s first-step guidance says to make sure you have the latest app version before following its troubleshooting steps. Check for an update in your device’s official app store, install it if available, then reopen TikTok and see whether the lag continues. TikTok’s first-steps guide.

2. Check whether the problem is your connection
Open another app or website that needs internet access. If those are slow too, or if TikTok behaves differently on Wi-Fi and mobile data, connectivity may be part of the problem. This is a diagnostic check, not proof that your network is responsible.

- Note whether videos load slowly, playback stutters, or the app itself is sluggish even when content is already loaded.
3. Close and reopen TikTok
As a basic troubleshooting step, close TikTok and launch it again. Then check whether scrolling, playback, and controls respond normally. The exact way to close an app depends on your phone; this is a general step, not a TikTok-specific official instruction.

4. Restart your phone
If reopening TikTok did not help, restart the phone and try the app again. This is another low-risk general check. It may help determine whether the slowdown persists after a fresh start, but it does not establish the cause.
5. Use TikTok’s cache controls if available
Cache controls may appear in TikTok, but the available guidance does not establish a current menu path or confirm that clearing cache will resolve lag. If you find a cache-clearing option in your version of the app, use it only if you understand what it removes; do not confuse clearing cache with deleting drafts or other personal content.

6. Check storage and background activity
Check whether your phone is low on available storage and whether many demanding apps are active at once. These are useful checks, not evidence that storage or background load is necessarily causing TikTok’s slowdown. Avoid deleting personal files just to test this; first identify what is using space and decide whether it is safe to remove.

TikTok describes Lite as an Android-only app with limited features intended to help optimize performance and use less storage. It is an alternative to consider, not a speed guarantee. If you install TikTok on Android, TikTok recommends Google Play for the latest version and warns against downloading APKs from other websites or QR codes. TikTok’s Android download guidance.
8. Reinstall only after checking drafts and account access
Removing and reinstalling TikTok is a more disruptive step, so do not start here. Before uninstalling, confirm that any drafts or other unsynced content you want to keep are safe; the available guidance does not establish whether drafts will remain after reinstalling. Also make sure you can sign back in, then reinstall from your device’s official app store and test the app.

9. Check account status or report the problem
Check whether the issue is account-specific
If only one account or function seems affected, TikTok’s Account status tool can show certain restrictions involving login, posting, commenting, profile editing, and direct messages. It is not a general test of phone hardware or app speed. TikTok’s Account status guidance.
Report persistent problems to TikTok
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, TikTok’s in-app reporting route starts at Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Report a problem. Menu labels can vary by app version. Describe what is happening, whether it affects one account or several, and whether it occurs on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both. TikTok’s Report a problem guidance.
