If Apple Music says “You’re already an Apple Music member” but won’t let you play songs, don’t subscribe again yet. The message usually means Apple recognizes an existing entitlement, while the app is signed into the wrong Apple Account or has stale account information. Check which account owns the subscription, then refresh the Music app’s sign-in.
Try these checks first
- Verify the plan. On iPhone or iPad, open Music, tap the profile button, then choose Manage Subscription. You can also check your Apple Account’s subscription settings or sign in to Apple Music on the web and open Settings → Subscriptions → Manage. Record the account, plan and status.
- Identify who provides your access. It may be your own Apple Music plan, access through Family Sharing, or Apple Music included with Apple One. If you pay through a carrier, Google Play or another partner, check that provider’s billing account too.
- Refresh the Music sign-in. Sign out of Apple Music or the media/purchasing account—not your entire iCloud account—close the app, restart the device, and sign back in with the account that owns or receives access.
- Test playback. Try a catalog song in the app and at Apple Music on the web. If web playback works but one app does not, troubleshoot that device rather than buying another plan.
- Check Sync Library. Once the right account is signed in, turn Sync Library on if you want your cloud library and playlists to appear on the device.
Signing out can mean downloading offline Apple Music tracks again. It is not the same as deleting personal music files, but keep a separate backup of personal files; Sync Library is not a backup service. Apple’s Sync Library guidance explains its account requirement and setup.
What the message can mean
The wording alone does not prove that a subscription is active on the account currently signed into the device. It can appear while starting a plan, trying to play music, setting up a new device, changing plans or accounts, or encountering an app session that has not refreshed. It can also be confusing when access comes from another person’s plan. Treat it as a reason to verify the entitlement, not as an instruction to purchase again.
- Active individual plan: The subscription may belong to another Apple Account, or the app may have stale sign-in information.
- Family Sharing: You may have access through the organizer rather than your own paid plan. The organizer’s plan must support sharing, and you must use your own Apple Account in the group.
- Apple One: Apple Music may be included in a bundle instead of listed as a separate plan.
- Expired or partner-billed plan: The account state may not match what you expect, or the billing relationship may need checking with the carrier or other provider.
- Device-specific problem: If the account works on the web or another device, the issue is more likely local to the app, device settings or network.
Make sure you are using the subscription account
Apple says to use the Apple Account used to subscribe when signing in to Apple Music on other devices. A person can be signed into iCloud with one account while using a different account for Media & Purchases or Apple Music. Older accounts, changed email addresses, and subscriptions started on Android or the web can add to the confusion.

Compare the account shown in Apple Music with the account shown in the subscription record. A changed email address does not necessarily mean the subscription moved to a different Apple Account. If you cannot access the account that appears to own the plan, do not create a second subscription as a workaround; contact Apple Support.
Refresh Apple Music on each device
iPhone and iPad
In Music, tap the profile button and look for account or sign-out controls. Labels and locations vary by iOS version. If needed, review Settings → Apps → Music for Music settings, and the Apple Account area in Settings for Media & Purchases and subscriptions. Sign out of the relevant Music or media session, restart, then sign in with the verified account. Avoid signing out of iCloud as an initial fix.
Android
In Apple Music, use More → Settings → Sign In. If the app presents a trial screen, choose Sign In rather than starting a plan. Enter the Apple Account that owns or receives the subscription. Apple’s Android sign-in instructions provide the current flow.

Mac and Windows
Open the Apple Music app and check its account or settings area to confirm the signed-in account. Sign out of the Music session if necessary, restart the app or computer, then sign back in with the subscription account. On Mac, Sync Library is in Music → Settings → General. In the Windows Apple Music app, look in its account or settings area for Sync Library.

Sign in at music.apple.com with the same account and try playing a catalog track. Apple’s web guide describes account settings and subscription management. Web playback is a useful comparison: if it works there but not in one app, focus on that device’s session, software, restrictions or network. If playback fails everywhere despite an active plan, the account entitlement needs further investigation.
Check Family Sharing and Apple One
Family Sharing
Apple says an Apple Music Family subscription can cover the organizer and up to five other family members, each using their own Apple Account. An individual or student plan must be upgraded to a family plan to share Apple Music. Confirm that you are in the intended group and that the organizer has an eligible, active plan; do not assume that any plan labeled Apple Music is shareable. See Apple’s Family Sharing overview and plan-sharing guidance.

On Android, Apple’s Family Sharing controls are under More → Account → Manage Family. If the organizer recently changed plans or the group changed, verify membership and plan status before leaving or changing the group. Leaving can affect access to other shared services and purchases.
Apple One
Check whether Apple Music is part of an active Apple One plan and, if access is shared, whether you are in the organizer’s Family Sharing group. If the bundle already includes Apple Music, a separate Apple Music subscription is not the first fix for a join prompt; resolve the account or sharing mismatch instead.

Subscription access and Sync Library are different. The subscription determines whether you can stream Apple Music; Sync Library makes your cloud library, playlists and saved catalog items available across devices. Apple says Sync Library requires Apple Music or iTunes Match and the same Apple Account used for the subscription. On iPhone or iPad, use Settings → Apps → Music → Sync Library; on Mac, use Music → Settings → General → Sync Library. Windows and Android controls vary by app version, so look in the Apple Music settings after signing in.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If one device still shows the error
Use these steps only after confirming the account and plan. They are most useful when web playback or another device works:
- Update Apple Music and the device’s operating system.
- Check the network, device date and time, available storage, parental controls and content restrictions.
- Restart the device and sign in again if the Music session still appears stale.
- Consider reinstalling Apple Music or clearing its Android cache only after noting that offline tracks may need to be downloaded again. Make sure personal music files are backed up and that you can complete Apple Account two-factor authentication.
Clearing cache, reinstalling and refreshing Family Sharing have been reported as workarounds in Apple Community discussions, but they are not a guaranteed diagnosis or fix.

Account, billing and region complications
If no subscription appears, first check whether you are looking at the account that actually subscribed. If billing is through a carrier, Google Play or another partner, the provider may control billing or cancellation, so Apple’s subscription screen may not show the whole relationship. Check the provider’s account and receipt before changing plans.
Apple Music availability varies by country or region. A region change can affect subscriptions, billing and media availability, and may require existing subscriptions to end before the change is allowed. Do not change your region as a routine way to clear this message; use Apple’s subscription and account guidance for the relevant region.
What not to do
- Do not buy a second plan yet. Verify the account and any Family Sharing or Apple One access first.
- Do not cancel and resubscribe as a first fix. Cancellation can end access at the billing-period boundary, affect downloaded tracks, complicate shared access, or risk a promotional rate. It may not address a subscription billed by another provider.
- Do not sign out of all iCloud services unnecessarily. That can affect Photos, Contacts, Find My, iCloud Drive and other device services; target the Music or media account.
- Do not erase the device or change its country or region to test a hunch. These are disruptive steps that do not establish who owns the subscription.
When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple if an active plan is shown but no device can play catalog music, a family member is correctly included but never receives access, charges continue while access is unavailable, the subscription is attached to an account you cannot access, or the message appears while changing an unrelated Apple service. Escalate before taking an action that could create a duplicate charge or disrupt a partner-billed plan.
Have the Apple Account email, subscription receipt or billing record, plan type and billing provider ready. Also note the device model, operating-system and Apple Music app versions, when the problem began, the exact message, and whether playback works on the web or another device. If you have a screenshot, include it with the support request.
