Incoming identification can come from Contacts, your carrier, Apple business data, or a supported caller-ID app, while outgoing number presentation may be controlled by the carrier. Use the symptom-based checks below, starting with the least disruptive fix.
Identify the symptom first
| What you see | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| A saved contact appears only as a number | Contact matching, formatting, or duplicate contacts |
| Every incoming call says “Unknown” | Carrier, network, or caller-ID database |
| Incoming calls say “No Caller ID” or “Private” | The caller or network withheld the number |
| Unknown callers do not ring | Silence Unknown Callers or another call filter |
| Only calls handled by an app are affected | Third-party caller-ID or blocking app |
| Your number appears as Private when you call | Show My Caller ID or carrier provisioning |
| The problem began after a SIM or eSIM change | Carrier account or line provisioning |
“Unknown” is not the same as “Private.” Unknown can mean that a number arrived but could not be matched to a name. No Caller ID or Private generally means the number was withheld. No iPhone setting can normally reveal a number that the caller intentionally hides.
Fix incoming Caller ID on iOS 14
1. Correct the contact record
- Open Contacts and search for the affected person.
- Confirm that the number is saved under the correct contact.
- Remove duplicate entries containing different versions of the same number.
- Save the complete number, including its area code. For international contacts, use the country code, such as
+1for the United States. - Update an existing contact if the person changed numbers instead of creating another duplicate.
- Call again and compare the result with an unsaved number.
This can restore a missing contact name, but it cannot make the carrier supply a name for an unsaved caller. Also check for extensions, extra characters, contacts that are not syncing, and calls arriving through a third-party calling service rather than the Phone app.
2. Turn off Silence Unknown Callers while testing
On iOS 14, open Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers and turn it off. The setting does not repair Caller ID; it can make Caller ID seem broken by silencing numbers outside Contacts, recent outgoing calls, or Siri Suggestions and sending them to voicemail. Apple describes this behavior at Manage unknown callers on iPhone.

Leave it off if you need every unknown number to ring. Turn it back on if spam reduction is more important, understanding that some legitimate unsaved callers may be silenced.
3. Review blocked contacts
Go to Settings → Phone → Call Blocking & Identification → Blocked Contacts and remove the number if it was blocked accidentally. Depending on the iOS 14 point release, you can also review blocking from the caller’s contact card or the Phone app. Apple’s call troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking blocked contacts when calls do not arrive normally: If calls don’t ring and go straight to voicemail on your iPhone.
4. Test Call Blocking & Identification
Open Settings → Phone → Call Blocking & Identification. Enable the caller-identification service you actually use, but temporarily disable third-party identification and blocking apps for a clean test. If several apps are installed, leave only one enabled, restart the iPhone, and test again. Re-enable them one at a time to find a conflict.
An app may have been disabled after an update, failed to refresh its database, or classified a legitimate call as spam and suppressed it. Apps add another identification source; they do not identify every number and cannot normally reveal a deliberately private call. Apple documents supported carrier and app controls in Screen and block calls on iPhone.

Fix outgoing Caller ID
Check Show My Caller ID
On iOS 14, open Settings → Phone → Show My Caller ID and enable it if recipients should see your number. Place a test call to a second phone after changing the setting.
On current iOS versions, the path is generally Settings → Apps → Phone → Show My Caller ID; the Apps submenu was not part of the iOS 14 layout.
If Show My Caller ID is missing or dimmed
Do not keep searching for a hidden switch. Apple says the cellular carrier may control or restrict this feature: How to block my Caller ID on iPhone. Ask the carrier to verify that:
- Caller ID presentation is enabled on the line.
- The account is correctly provisioned and is not configured as private.
- The SIM or eSIM is provisioned correctly.
- There is no billing, account, plan, or network restriction.
- The plan supports changing this setting.
Refresh the iPhone and cellular connection
Restart and run controlled tests
Restart the iPhone normally for its model. Then call the affected iPhone from a saved contact, an unsaved number, and a second phone if available. Also place an outgoing call to the second phone. Comparing these tests shows whether the fault is contact-specific, incoming-only, or present on the line itself.

Check for a carrier-settings update
- Connect to cellular data or Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings → General → About.
- Wait several seconds for an update prompt.
- Install it if offered, then restart and test again.
Carrier-settings updates are supplied by the carrier and can affect network features; the prompt and availability vary by carrier and account.
Check service, SIM, and carrier status
- Confirm ordinary calls connect.
- Test in more than one location.
- If practical, test the SIM in another compatible phone.
- Ask whether another phone on the same carrier has the same Caller ID problem.
- Note whether the issue started after changing carriers, plans, SIMs, or eSIMs.
- Check the carrier’s outage and account-status information.
If only one contact is affected, start with Contacts. If only unknown numbers are affected, focus on Silence Unknown Callers and filtering. If all incoming calls show Unknown, or the problem follows the SIM to another phone, carrier or network data is more likely. With Dual SIM, test each line separately; a problem on only one line points toward that line’s provisioning. Roaming can also change how newer call-screening features behave, so do not assume current roaming rules describe iOS 14.
Reset network settings only after simpler checks
On iOS 14, use Settings → General → Reset → Reset Network Settings. (Later versions use Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.)
This does not erase photos, apps, messages, or other personal content. It does remove saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets network-related settings, including VPN and cellular-network configurations. Save Wi-Fi passwords and note work-network or VPN details first. The reset may clear a local configuration problem, but it cannot reprovision a carrier account or repair a carrier database, so it is not a guaranteed Caller ID fix.

When to contact the carrier
Contact the carrier when Show My Caller ID is unavailable or dimmed, all callers are affected, the issue began after a SIM/eSIM or plan change, or the problem follows the SIM to another phone. Use this wording:
“Caller ID is not working on my line. Please check whether outgoing Caller ID presentation and incoming Caller ID are correctly provisioned, and verify that my SIM or eSIM and account support the feature.”
Ask the representative to check for an outage, account restriction, incorrect private-line configuration, and any required reprovisioning.
iOS 14 versus current iOS instructions
Apple’s newer documentation places many Phone controls under Settings → Apps → Phone and includes call-screening and filtering capabilities introduced after iOS 14. On an iOS 14 iPhone, use the older Settings → Phone paths shown above; do not expect later features or labels to exist. Apple’s current references are Change your Phone settings on iPhone and Screen and block calls on iPhone.

Optional caller-ID services
You do not need to buy an app or support plan for the built-in checks, a restart, a carrier-settings refresh, or carrier assistance. Services such as Truecaller and Hiya can add spam and business-number data, while carrier services such as Verizon Call Filter, AT&T ActiveArmor, and T-Mobile Scam Shield may provide additional filtering for eligible customers. Availability, permissions, privacy effects, false positives, and plan features vary. None is a reliable way to reveal a caller who withholds the number or to repair carrier-side line provisioning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reveal a private or No Caller ID number?
Normally no. A caller or network can intentionally withhold the number, and changing Contacts or iPhone settings cannot force it to appear.
Why does Caller ID work for some calls but not others?
Different calls may use different sources: your Contacts, a carrier directory, Apple business data, or an optional caller-ID app. Some callers transmit no name, and databases can be incomplete or outdated.
Does resetting network settings delete my data?
No personal photos, apps, messages, or other content are erased, but saved Wi-Fi passwords and network, VPN, and cellular settings are removed.
Why are calls going straight to voicemail?
Silence Unknown Callers, a blocking app, blocked contacts, Focus settings, or carrier filtering can prevent normal ringing. Turn off unknown-caller silencing and third-party filters while testing.
Do I need a caller-ID app?
No. Apps are optional sources for broader spam or business identification and are not required for basic Caller ID operation.
