When Gmail buttons such as Compose, Send, Reply, Archive, Delete, Search or Settings stop responding, the cause is usually local browser or app state—not one universal Gmail bug. The fastest way to identify it is to check Google’s service status, then open Gmail in a private window and compare another browser, device or network before clearing data.
First identify what is failing
“Not working” can describe different problems, and each points to a different remedy:
- A button is visible but clicking does nothing.
- The control is greyed out.
- An icon or toolbar is missing.
- Only one message, conversation or compose window fails.
- Gmail is frozen or continually loading.
- Search accepts text but does not execute.
- Compose opens, but Send, Attach, formatting or link controls fail.
- The website fails, the mobile app fails, or both fail.
Record the exact symptom, the account affected, your browser or app version, operating system and when the problem started. That information makes later comparisons and support reports useful.
Check whether Google is having an outage
Open the Google Workspace Status Dashboard and check Gmail’s current and recent incidents. If Gmail has an active incident, local cache or extension changes will not repair the service; wait for Google’s resolution and use another mail method temporarily. A normal dashboard does not completely exclude a regional, account-specific or newly emerging problem, so continue with isolation tests if the symptom remains.

The quickest diagnostic: private or incognito mode
- Open a private window (Incognito in Chrome, Private Browsing in Firefox or Safari, or InPrivate in Edge).
- Go directly to https://mail.google.com and sign in.
- Test the same button or message.
If it works privately, an extension, stored site data or a browser-profile setting is the leading suspect. Private mode is a test, not a permanent fix: it may disable extensions and change cookie behavior. If the button still fails, continue with the browser, network, account and service checks below.
If Gmail works privately: isolate extensions
Google lists browser extensions and other computer applications among possible causes of Gmail loading and control failures. Temporarily disable extensions, especially ad or tracker blockers, script blockers, privacy tools, grammar assistants, email productivity add-ons, password or security extensions and antivirus browser plug-ins. Corporate web-inspection tools can have the same effect.
- Disable all extensions.
- Reload Gmail and test the failed control.
- If it works, re-enable extensions one at a time, reloading after each.
- Remove or reconfigure the extension that reproduces the failure.
Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled. If security software must be tested, make it a brief, controlled comparison and turn protection back on immediately. User reports describe ad blockers and other extensions associated with missing or inert Gmail controls, but those reports are examples rather than proof that a particular product is universally defective. If private mode also fails: refresh the browser session
Hard-reload Gmail
A normal reload can reuse stale interface resources. On Windows and Linux, commonly press Ctrl+Shift+R or Ctrl+F5; on macOS, commonly press Command+Shift+R. Shortcuts vary by browser. If nothing changes, close the Gmail tab, reopen https://mail.google.com directly and sign in again.
Clear Gmail site data, not everything first
Clear cached files and cookies/site storage for Gmail and the relevant Google sign-in domains, using your browser’s site-data controls. Then close and reopen the browser. Google recommends clearing cache and cookies for Gmail interface and loading problems (official troubleshooting guidance).
Site-data clearing can sign you out of Gmail and other Google services and remove preferences. Before doing it, confirm that you know the account password and can complete any required two-step verification. A site-specific deletion is safer than wiping every cookie and browsing record.

Check browser support and settings
- Update the browser to its latest supported release, then retry Gmail.
- Test another current mainstream browser. Do not assume a particular version remains supported indefinitely.
- Ensure JavaScript is enabled and cookies are not completely blocked.
- If Gmail says the browser is unsupported, temporarily disable extensions that alter scripts or browser identity. Google notes that an extension can trigger this message even when the underlying browser should work.
- On a work or school device, ask the administrator whether Google domains, scripts, cookies or pop-ups are filtered.

Use comparisons to locate the fault

Google recommends trying another supported browser, device and network when Gmail does not load correctly (Google’s troubleshooting steps). A VPN, corporate proxy, DNS filter or endpoint-security product can block Gmail resources while ordinary websites continue to work.

Compose does nothing
- Test Compose in a private window.
- Disable extensions, especially ad blockers, writing tools and email add-ons.
- Clear Gmail site data if the extension test changes nothing.
- Open Gmail in another browser or a new tab at https://mail.google.com.
- Test a second account in the same browser to determine whether one account is affected.

Send does nothing
Before refreshing or deleting data, check the compose window for an invalid recipient, warning or error. Look in Drafts to see whether Gmail saved the message. Send a short plain-text test to yourself, and remove a large attachment or embedded image if the problem occurs only with one message. Try the website if the app fails, or the app if the website fails. Do not repeatedly press Send; a delayed first request can eventually complete and create duplicates.
Reply, Forward, Archive, Delete or More is inert
Open a different message. If every message fails, use the browser and session tests above; if only one conversation fails, suspect message-specific rendering or data. Keyboard shortcuts are only a workaround when you had already enabled them. If an icon is absent but its hover label appears, incomplete styles or blocked resources are possible; this is a likely rendering conflict, not an official Gmail diagnosis. Search accepts text but does not run
Test private mode, disable extensions, clear Gmail site data and try another browser. Check whether Settings, account menus and other toolbar controls fail too. Simultaneous failure of several controls points to a browser/session, network or service problem rather than Search alone. A user report illustrating that pattern is at Gmail buttons and Search.

Buttons or icons are missing
Distinguish missing from unresponsive. A responsive layout, narrow window, collapsed toolbar, hidden formatting row, browser zoom, display scaling, blocked images or styles, an incompletely rendered compose window, or an unusual Gmail mode can hide controls. Widen the window and reset excessive zoom, then perform the private-window and alternate-browser tests. Do not rely on old instructions for Basic HTML view as a guaranteed solution; its availability and role can change.

- Update Gmail in Google Play.
- Restart the phone and confirm connectivity by opening another app or website.
- Pull down in the inbox to perform a manual sync.
- In Gmail, open Menu → Settings → account → Sync Gmail and verify synchronization.
- Check available device storage and Google Account storage. Gmail shares account storage with Drive and Photos; when the quota is full, messages may not send or arrive.
- Open Android Settings → Apps → Gmail, choose Force stop, then reopen Gmail.
- Use Clear cache first.
- Use Clear storage or Clear data only as a last resort.
Menu labels vary by Android manufacturer and version. Google warns that clearing Gmail storage can remove drafts that have not synchronized, signatures, ringtones and other settings. Its Android guidance is available at sync and storage troubleshooting and Gmail app error steps. Google Play services may be involved when ordinary app troubleshooting fails, but do not remove the account or factory-reset the phone as routine fixes.
iPhone and iPad troubleshooting
- Update Gmail in the App Store.
- Force-close and reopen the app, then restart the device.
- Open Safari and test Gmail at https://mail.google.com. If Safari works, the issue is limited to the app.
- Check the connection and Google’s service dashboard.
- If the app remains broken, reinstall it only after confirming drafts are synchronized.
iOS does not expose Android-style clear-cache controls. Google’s update guidance is at Gmail for iPhone and iPad.
Account, message and storage edge cases
- If one account fails while another works in the same browser, focus on that account’s session, storage quota, managed-account policies or a damaged draft rather than reinstalling the browser.
- A large attachment or malformed embedded content can break one compose window; test a new plain-text message.
- A full Google Account storage quota can affect sending, receiving and synchronization.
- In managed environments, administrators may need to allow Gmail scripts, cookies, pop-ups or Google domains.
- A browser update may expose an extension incompatibility; the update itself is not proof of a Gmail defect.
When to stop and report the problem
Escalate through Gmail Help or your Workspace administrator when the same failure persists across supported browsers, devices and networks, or when an active incident is listed. Include your browser and operating-system versions, device type, account type, exact controls affected, start date, whether private mode worked, and the troubleshooting steps completed. Do not publish your email address, message contents, passwords, verification codes or other personal data in a public forum.
