First identify which PC version you’re running: the original 4.04 build or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered. Their requirements and recent fixes differ, so check your installed version and update before treating every crash or frame-rate drop as the same problem. For crashes, CD PROJEKT RED’s recommended order is to check requirements, close nonessential programs, check for malware, verify the game files, then investigate the graphics driver.
Check your edition, build, and PC requirements first
CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for owners on specified platforms. It brings technical and visual changes, including Path Tracing on PC. The developer says existing saves remain compatible, though the changed skill system resets skills; whether you can revert to an earlier version depends on platform. See the official Remastered FAQ.

Before troubleshooting, note the edition and build shown by your game launcher, then check the requirements for that version and the graphics tier you intend to use. Remastered’s requirements distinguish Recommended, Ultra, RT Minimum, RT Recommended, and Path Tracing; they are not interchangeable hardware targets. The developer’s expected frame rates come from its QA tests and can vary by scene, gameplay, system configuration, and settings. RT and Path Tracing targets use automatic upscaling; Path Tracing also uses Frame Generation, while the other configurations are native resolution. See CD PROJEKT RED’s updated PC requirements.
That requirements page says an SSD is required for Remastered’s latest technical enhancements, including smoother asset streaming and faster loading. An SSD can help with storage-related loading and streaming, but it is not a general cure for crashes or every cause of stuttering.

Windows 10 needs a specific caveat: CD PROJEKT RED no longer officially supports or tests it for continued development. The game may still run, but the developer cannot guarantee compatibility or performance on Windows 10 going forward.
Fix crashes in the developer’s recommended order
- Compare your PC with the requirements. Check the requirements for your installed edition and intended graphics settings before changing drivers or other system settings.
- Close nonessential programs. Temporarily exit background applications, including antivirus or antimalware software, to see whether a conflict is involved. Re-enable protection after the test, and check that the PC is free of malware.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-check or repair function in the store or launcher where you installed the game. The exact label varies by store.
- Investigate the graphics driver. If the crash continues, CD PROJEKT RED suggests a clean driver reinstall: download the driver you intend to install, use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to remove previous driver versions, then install the downloaded driver cleanly. The developer cautions that an older driver can sometimes help with crashing, so the newest driver is not automatically the answer. Follow the official crash troubleshooting guidance.
If a crash occurs while loading a save with HairWorks enabled on DirectX 11, distinguish that specific symptom from current Remastered performance reports. A June 6, 2024 PC hotfix addressed that save-load crash; its existence does not establish that it fixes unrelated or current crashes. See the June 2024 hotfix notice.

Diagnose stuttering or low FPS
Install the applicable update before tuning settings
Check for the latest patch or hotfix for your installed version before changing a long list of settings. Hotfix 5.00c, published October 1, 2026, reverted a change that had caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some users. Earlier advice may describe a different build. The Hotfix 5.00c notes explain the change.
Use HairWorks as a controlled diagnostic toggle
CD PROJEKT RED’s HairWorks support notice warns that enabling NVIDIA HairWorks may significantly affect performance and recommends disabling it until the issue is addressed in a future patch. Because Hotfix 5.00c later reverted a related change for some users, treat HairWorks as a test rather than a guaranteed fix: note your current setting, disable it, then compare frame rate and smoothness in the same scene on the same build. Match resolution and graphics tier to your hardware
Higher output resolution can significantly reduce FPS. Compare like with like: check your hardware against the requirements tier you selected, then test a lower resolution or less demanding graphics settings one change at a time. Frame-rate expectations from the official requirements are tied to their specific configuration and rendering conditions, not a promise for every scene or PC.
Check storage and operating-system support
If you are playing Remastered from a hard drive, check the requirements page: CD PROJEKT RED now lists an SSD as required for the latest technical enhancements and cites loading and asset-streaming benefits. If you use Windows 10, factor in the developer’s stated support limitation rather than assuming performance or compatibility is guaranteed.

Why older fixes may not apply to your build
Past hotfixes can be relevant to a specific symptom, but they are not evidence that the same issue exists on a current installation. Besides the June 2024 DirectX 11 HairWorks save-load fix, a February 2023 PC hotfix addressed performance issues after Patch 4.01. That older performance fix does not establish a current low-FPS cause. See the February 2023 hotfix notes.
