Most SCP: Secret Laboratory authentication errors are failures in the connection between your game, Steam, and Northwood’s authentication servers—not proof that your installation is corrupted. Try a second public server first, completely restart Steam, add --weak-http-security in the game’s Steam launch options, and check whether antivirus or firewall filtering is blocking SCPSL. If every server still fails, capture the exact console message and contact Northwood support with those details.

What the SCP: Secret Laboratory authentication error means
Players describe the same failure in several ways: “authentication error,” “Client failed to authenticate in time,” “Server Verification Failed,” “stuck on authenticating,” or simply “connection failure.” The wording differs, but the common problem is that the client cannot complete the verification exchange required before it joins a server.

SCP: Secret Laboratory depends on Northwood Central Servers for player authentication and the public-server list. Northwood’s EULA, last updated 22 December 2022, defines the Central Server as “a server hosted by Northwood that handles authentication of Players, generation of the in-game list of public Servers, or server-side part of the Anti-cheat System.” A failure anywhere along that path can stop a connection before you enter the game.
Northwood Tech Support Wiki contributor Denty describes the timeout variant this way: “This issue is typically caused by a user’s authentication token being rejected or reassigned constantly by our central servers.” That explanation is why a timeout should not automatically be treated as damaged game files. The fault may be global, limited to one server, caused by Steam’s session, or produced by local filtering or regional internet restrictions.

Do these checks in order
- Try at least two different public servers. A second server that works points toward the original server’s verification path rather than your computer.
- Check Steam’s connection state. If Steam has lost its Friends-network connection or shows an outage, wait for Steam to recover.
- Exit Steam completely. Close the client, verify that it is no longer running, reopen it, and launch SCP: Secret Laboratory again.
- Add the documented launch option. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, select Launch Options, and enter
--weak-http-security. - Review security filtering. Confirm that SCPSL is allowed through Windows Firewall and your security software. Northwood specifically documents allow-listing SCPSL in antivirus software for restriction-related failures.
- Record the exact diagnostic text. Screenshot the red or diagnostic console message shown after the kick or failed connection before contacting Northwood.
These steps move from low-risk checks that identify the scope of the problem to reversible configuration changes and, finally, support escalation. Do not begin by deleting files or reinstalling the game unless support identifies an installation problem.
Step 1: Find out whether the failure is server-specific
Connect to more than one server
Open the public-server list and try a different server, preferably one with a different name and host. If the second server connects normally, the first server may be failing its own verification or may be temporarily unreachable. Steam’s official Server Verification Failed guidance treats a successful connection elsewhere as evidence that the failed server is the likely fault domain.

At this point, repeatedly retrying one server adds little information; continue with the Steam and network checks below.

Step 2: Check Steam and restart it completely
Look for a lost Steam connection
Before changing game settings, look at Steam’s Friends list and connection indicators. Steam’s Server Verification Failed guidance says a lost Friends-network connection is a reason to exit and restart the client. If Steam cannot maintain its own session, SCP: Secret Laboratory may not receive the identity information needed for authentication.
You can also check whether Steam is reporting a wider service problem. A Steam-wide outage can affect many games at once; changing firewall rules on your computer will not repair an outage upstream.

Perform a full restart, not just a game relaunch
- Exit SCP: Secret Laboratory.
- Use Steam’s Exit command rather than only closing the window.
- Wait a few seconds, then confirm Steam is no longer running in the taskbar or system process list.
- Open Steam again and wait until your Friends list is online.
- Launch SCP: Secret Laboratory and test a server.
This is a low-risk, reversible step. It refreshes the Steam session and can replace a stale authentication hand-off without modifying game files.
Step 3: Add --weak-http-security in Steam
Northwood documents the launch option --weak-http-security for authentication-timeout problems and for the government-restrictions case. It changes how the client handles the relevant HTTP connection, so it is a targeted troubleshooting setting rather than a general performance tweak.
Exact Steam path
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click SCP: Secret Laboratory and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General page and find Launch Options.
- Enter exactly
--weak-http-security, including the two hyphens. - Close the Properties window and launch the game.
- Try more than one server again.
Northwood warns that this option may slow server-list loading. That trade-off is expected: the setting can make the authentication path usable in circumstances where the normal request is blocked or rejected, but it does not guarantee that every authentication failure is fixed.
How to undo the setting
Return to the same Properties → General → Launch Options box, delete --weak-http-security, and close the window. Restart the game to test the default behavior. The change is a reversible Steam configuration edit; it does not alter your installation.
Step 4: Check antivirus and firewall filtering
Security software can prevent SCPSL from reaching the services it needs. Northwood’s restriction-specific guidance recommends allow-listing SCPSL in antivirus software. Windows Firewall or another security product may also be blocking the executable or its network traffic.

What to verify
- SCPSL is present in the antivirus product’s allowed or exception list.
- The game is allowed on the network profile you are currently using in Windows Firewall.
- A recently installed security suite, parental-control tool, DNS filter, or managed-network policy has not introduced a new block.
- You are changing the rule for the actual game executable, not an unrelated launcher or an old installation path.
After adding an allow rule, restart the game and retest. Do not disable all protection indefinitely. Make the narrowest exception available, record what you changed, and remove it if testing shows no difference. The documented allow-list step establishes a possible remedy for restricted connections; it does not prove that every authentication error is caused by a firewall.
Step 5: Recognize the government-restrictions case
Northwood’s page titled “Authentication error (government restrictions)” states that “Some players cannot connect to the game due to government internet restrictions in their country.” In this situation, the client may be healthy and Steam may be online, yet the network policy prevents contact with authentication servers.
Indicators that regional blocking may be involved
- The failure occurs consistently on every server.
- The same account connects from another network or location but not from the restricted connection.
- The problem affects players in the same country or network environment at the same time.
- The console message or support response specifically mentions a restriction, blocked host, or inability to reach authentication services.
Northwood’s documented actions for this case are to add --weak-http-security, allow-list SCPSL in antivirus software, and seek localized support. Apply those steps before assuming that a local reinstall will help.
About using a VPN as a test
A VPN can be a conditional network experiment for someone facing a documented regional restriction: if the game authenticates through a permitted route, the comparison provides evidence that the original network path is being filtered. It is not an official universal fix, and no specific VPN service is endorsed by Northwood in the cited guidance. A VPN may also add latency, fail to bypass a particular policy, or conflict with a school, workplace, or local law. Do not treat a successful VPN test as proof that the game installation is faulty; it primarily identifies a path or policy problem.

Step 6: Read and preserve the console message
The visible kick text is often less specific than the diagnostic or red console line that follows it. Capture the exact wording, capitalization, and timing. A screenshot is preferable to paraphrasing because “Client failed to authenticate in time,” “Server Verification Failed,” and a host-unreachable message point to different parts of the connection path.

Do not add --authdebug as an automatic cure. Diagnostic switches are useful only when current Northwood support guidance asks for them or explains how to interpret their output. The practical value of the console is the evidence it gives support staff, not a guarantee that an undocumented parameter will repair the connection.
Step 7: Escalate to Northwood with a complete report
If the checks above fail, use Northwood’s official support site or its Discord technical-support channel. Northwood’s contact page identifies Discord as the fastest support route and directs players to the support site for frequently asked questions.

Include these details in one message
- The exact error and console text, copied or shown in screenshots.
- Your SCP: Secret Laboratory game version.
- Your operating system and version.
- Whether one server fails or every server fails.
- Whether Steam Friends was online or displayed a lost-connection message.
- Whether a full Steam restart changed the result.
- Whether you tested
--weak-http-securityand whether server-list loading became slower. - Which antivirus, firewall, or managed-network allow-list changes you made.
- Whether the connection is home broadband, mobile, school, workplace, or another managed network.
- Your country or region when a government-restrictions error is plausible.
List the steps you already tried in order. This prevents support from repeating basic checks and lets staff distinguish a server-specific incident from a Central Server, Steam, or local-network problem.

Common mistakes that waste time
Reinstalling before identifying the scope
A clean reinstall cannot repair a Steam outage, a Northwood Central Server incident, a server’s verification failure, or a government network restriction. First establish whether another server works and whether Steam is connected. Reinstall only when support or other evidence points to missing or damaged local files.
Changing several settings at once
If you restart Steam, change firewall rules, add launch options, and switch networks simultaneously, you cannot tell which condition mattered. Use one test at a time, record the result, and keep configuration edits reversible.
Assuming a slow server list means a new failure
Northwood warns that --weak-http-security may slow server-list loading. A longer wait after adding the option is therefore an expected trade-off, not by itself proof that the setting made authentication worse. Give the list time to load, then test a server and compare the actual connection result.

“Authentication error” is a family of symptoms. Without the exact console line, server scope, Steam status, operating system, and steps already attempted, support cannot readily separate token rejection from an unreachable host or regional restriction.
After the connection succeeds
Confirm the fix with a second server rather than stopping after one lucky connection. If you used --weak-http-security, decide whether to leave it enabled: Northwood documents it as a remedy for particular authentication and restriction scenarios, but notes the possible server-list slowdown. If an antivirus or firewall exception was required, keep only the narrow SCPSL rule and document why it exists.
If the error returns, note whether it affects every server, whether Steam Friends is still online, and whether the console wording changed. A changed message is useful evidence; it can show that one layer was repaired while another remains blocked.
What is not established
Northwood’s published guidance does not provide a reliable success rate, incident frequency, or average resolution time for authentication errors. Those figures should not be guessed from individual player reports. The practical diagnosis therefore depends on the server comparison, Steam status, reversible launch-option and allow-list tests, and the exact console evidence you provide to support.
