Yes. You can run independent WordPress installations at paths such as https://example.com/site1 and https://example.com/site2 on the same domain and server. Each installation needs its own WordPress files, configuration, database arrangement and rewrite scope. That setup is different from WordPress Multisite: Multisite uses one WordPress core and database to create virtual sites that happen to use subdirectory URLs.

A separate-install setup places a complete WordPress codebase in every physical directory. For example:
/site1contains its ownwp-admin,wp-content, WordPress core files andwp-config.php./site2contains a second, independent copy with its own configuration.- Each copy can use a different database, or both can share one database when every installation has a unique table prefix.
The web server must pass requests for /site1/... to the first directory and requests for /site2/... to the second. Rewrite rules inside each directory then send front-end requests to that directory’s index.php, rather than to the root site.

This is supported by WordPress documentation on running multiple instances. Every instance has its own wp-config.php and installation directory. Separate databases provide the clearest isolation; a shared database is possible only when table prefixes never overlap.
Separate installs versus WordPress Multisite
Both approaches can produce URLs such as /site1 and /site2, but they are fundamentally different systems.

WordPress describes a Multisite network as “a collection of sites that all share the same WordPress installation core files.” A subdirectory Multisite network uses path-based site addresses, but those paths are virtual; they do not represent separate WordPress directories on disk.
Choose separate installs when isolation matters
- One site must use a plugin, theme or PHP compatibility level that another site cannot use.
- Different owners or teams need separate administrator access.
- You want to update, harden, restore or migrate one site without changing the others.
- A failure or compromised plugin on one site should have the smallest possible blast radius.
Choose Multisite when central control is the priority
- A single administrative team manages all sites.
- The sites can share the same WordPress core version and compatible extensions.
- Centralized theme and plugin governance is more valuable than per-site independence.
- You accept network-level migrations and the fact that not every plugin supports Multisite.
How to run independent WordPress sites in physical subfolders
1. Plan directories and URLs
Decide the final paths before installing anything. A typical layout is:

/public_html/site2/ (second WordPress install)Use the exact path in each site’s WordPress Address and Site Address settings. Do not install both copies into the same directory, and do not point both URLs at the root installation.
2. Create a database arrangement
The safest arrangement is one database per site, with credentials limited to that database. If your host requires a shared database, assign a different table prefix to every installation. For example, the first configuration might use $table_prefix = 'site1_'; and the second $table_prefix = 'site2_';. Never reuse a prefix: overlapping prefixes can make one installation read or modify another installation’s tables.

3. Upload a complete WordPress copy to each directory
Place the WordPress files for the first site in /site1 and a separate copy in /site2. Each directory must contain its own wp-config.php. Enter the matching database name, user, password and host in each file, then set the unique table prefix when a database is shared.
4. Run each installer at its own path
- Open
https://example.com/site1/wp-admin/install.phpand complete the first installation. - Open
https://example.com/site2/wp-admin/install.phpand complete the second installation. - In each dashboard, confirm that WordPress Address and Site Address include the correct subfolder.
- Save permalinks in each dashboard under Settings > Permalinks to generate or refresh that site’s rewrite rules.
Use different administrator credentials unless the sites are intentionally managed by the same people. Treat each dashboard as a separate security boundary even when the files share a server.

5. Scope rewrite rules to the child directory
On Apache, each child installation normally needs an .htaccess file whose rewrite base and front-controller target include its folder. A representative configuration for /site1 is:

The parent server must evaluate the child directory’s rules before a root-site catch-all sends unknown paths to the main installation. On Nginx or another server, configure an equivalent location and front-controller rule; Nginx does not process .htaccess.

How WordPress Multisite in subdirectory mode works
Multisite is a network feature, not a collection of full WordPress copies. One core installation serves all sites, while the database stores separate tables for each site and the uploads are separated by site paths. A subdirectory network may show example.com/site1 and example.com/site2, but those names are virtual network paths.
Important eligibility constraint
WordPress documentation warns that you may be unable to select a subdirectory network when the existing installation has been running for more than one month. Existing permalink structures can conflict with path-based site URLs. The main site also normally uses a /blog/ post path in a subdirectory network. Check this limitation before planning a conversion.

Preparation checklist
- Make a tested backup of the database,
wp-config.phpand.htaccess. - Confirm that pretty permalinks work on the current site.
- Temporarily deactivate plugins if the Network Setup screen instructs you to do so.
- Ensure you can edit the server’s configuration and restore the previous files.
Network setup procedure
- Open
wp-config.phpand adddefine( 'WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true );before the line that says WordPress editing is stopped. - Sign in to the dashboard and open Tools > Network Setup.
- Choose Sub-directories when that option is available, then enter the network title and administrator email.
- Click Install. WordPress displays additional constants for
wp-config.phpand rewrite rules for.htaccess. - Copy the generated values exactly, back up the files again, then sign out and back in.
- Use My Sites > Network Admin to create sites and manage network settings.
The generated Apache rules include special handling for /wp-admin, existing files and directories, WordPress PHP paths and the final front-controller rewrite. Do not substitute the root site’s old rules without comparing the generated paths.
Plugin, theme and update differences
With separate installs, each dashboard controls its own themes, plugins, WordPress version and scheduled maintenance. This flexibility also multiplies the work: security updates, backups, staging tests and recovery procedures must be repeated for every site.
In Multisite, the network administrator installs themes for the network. A theme can then be enabled for individual sites, depending on network settings. Plugins may be activated for one site or network-activated for all sites. Some plugins do not support Multisite, and a plugin that assumes a single-site database or upload path can fail unexpectedly. Check compatibility before moving a production site into a network.
Why a subfolder site redirects to the main site
A redirect usually means the request reached the root installation instead of the child installation, or the child site has the wrong URL stored in its database.

Also clear page, object and CDN caches after changing rewrite or URL settings. Test an incognito window and a non-cached URL so an old redirect does not hide the fix.
Backups, security and migration considerations
Separate installs require a backup set for every directory and database. A usable backup includes the database, wp-content, configuration files and any server-level rewrite configuration. Test restoring one site without restoring the others.

Multisite backups are network-wide by default. Restoring a single site can require identifying that site’s tables, uploads and network relationships, so confirm that your backup software supports per-site restoration before relying on it. Network administrators should also limit who can install plugins or themes, because a network-level extension can affect every site.
Keep each architecture on a supported PHP and WordPress version, remove unused administrator accounts, use least-privilege database credentials and monitor file changes. Separate directories do not automatically provide isolation if all sites run under the same server user; a vulnerable plugin can still expose neighboring files when permissions are too broad.
A practical decision checklist
- Need different plugin or theme stacks? Prefer separate installs.
- Need independent release schedules? Prefer separate installs.
- Need one dashboard and one core upgrade process? Consider Multisite.
- Can every required plugin confirm Multisite support? If not, use separate installs.
- Can your team manage network-wide permissions and recovery? If not, avoid Multisite for critical sites.
- Do you control DNS and server routing? You need that control for reliable subdomain Multisite and for correcting parent/child rewrite conflicts.
For two unrelated sites, independent physical subfolders are usually the least surprising design. For a coordinated group of sites with compatible software and one operations team, a subdirectory Multisite network can reduce duplicated administration, provided you accept its shared-core and migration constraints.
