How to Fix the 414 Request-URI Too Large Error

A 414 Request-URI Too Large error means a URL target exceeded a limit somewhere between the client and application. Learn how to find the rejecting layer, fix oversized queries and redirect loops, and adjust nginx, Apache, IIS or Kestrel settings safely.

A 414 error means the request target—the path and query string sent in the URL—is longer than a server or intermediary is willing to parse. The reliable fix is to identify the smallest limit in the request path, remove unnecessary data or stop a redirect from expanding the URL, and only then raise a bounded limit consistently across every proxy and server involved. The current HTTP name is 414 URI Too Long; older software and error pages may call it 414 Request-URI Too Large.

What the 414 status means

RFC 9110, Section 15.5.15, defines 414 as a refusal to process a request because its target URI is longer than the server is willing to interpret. The target is not just the domain name. It includes the path, question mark, query parameters, percent-encoded data and, in HTTP/1.1, the surrounding request-line syntax.

RFC 9112 requires a recipient that receives a request-target longer than any URI it wishes to parse to return 414. It recommends that HTTP senders and recipients support request-line lengths of at least 8,000 octets (IETF, 2022). That is an interoperability floor, not a universal maximum. A browser, CDN, load balancer, reverse proxy, web server, security filter or application framework may impose a smaller limit.

Older HTTP/1.1 guidance said the protocol had no a priori URI limit, while warning that older clients and proxies might fail above 255 bytes (IETF, 1999). Consequently, there is no single “maximum URL length” that applies to every deployment. The effective ceiling is the smallest one on the route between client and application.

A 414 is different from an oversized upload. A request body that is too large commonly produces 413, while oversized header fields may produce 400 or 431. Changing upload-size settings will not correct a request-target that is too long.

Why a URL becomes too long

Large GET state

Applications sometimes put serialized JSON, arrays of IDs, signed state, form fields or elaborate filter objects into a GET query string. Percent-encoding can make the transmitted form even longer. A client that converts a POST into a GET while retaining a large payload is one of the patterns identified by RFC 9110.

Redirect growth or a redirect “black hole”

A redirect can create a 414 even when the original URL was short. If each hop appends the previous path, query string or a return URL instead of replacing the intended value, the request grows until a proxy or server rejects it. Repeatedly adding tracking parameters or nested redirect/returnUrl parameters has the same effect.

A smaller intermediary limit

The application may accept a long request while the edge proxy, ingress controller, CDN, web server or security filter rejects it first. Raising a setting on the application alone cannot help if an earlier component has the smallest ceiling.

Fixed-buffer and security protections

HTTP components use bounded buffers and request limits to control memory use and reduce exposure to abnormal-request or resource-exhaustion attacks. A 414 can therefore be an intentional protective response rather than evidence that the application is down.

Diagnose the failing request in the right order

  1. Capture the exact request. Record the HTTP method and complete request-target, including every path segment, query parameter and percent-encoded byte. Measure bytes as transmitted when possible; character count is not always byte count, especially with non-ASCII text and encoding.
  2. Follow every redirect. Compare the URL at each hop. Look for a prefix repeatedly added to a suffix, duplicated parameters, a nested return URL, or state that is appended on every response. Inspect each Location value rather than only the final browser address.
  3. Locate the first rejection. Check browser or client diagnostics, CDN/load-balancer logs, reverse-proxy errors, web-server logs and application-server logs. The component that emits the visible error is not necessarily the component with the smallest configured limit, so trace the request from the client inward.
  4. Distinguish the request line from headers and the body. Confirm that the failing bytes are in the URL target. A large cookie or other header can trigger a different status, and a large upload is a body-size problem.
  5. Check cache behavior while testing. RFC 9110 makes 414 heuristically cacheable unless method semantics or explicit cache controls say otherwise. Purge the relevant intermediary cache or bypass it with an appropriate test request so an old error response does not make a corrected request appear broken.

Keep a before-and-after record of the complete URL, method, redirect chain, responding component and measured length. That prevents a limit change from masking a construction bug.

Choose a remedy: remove the cause or raise the ceiling

Remedy Removes the underlying cause? Components to change Client and cache compatibility Data exposure and security
Delete unused or duplicated query parameters Usually yes Application or link generator Generally broad compatibility; shorter cache keys Less data in browser history, logs and referrers
Move large input from GET to a request body, commonly POST Yes, when the operation is designed for a body Client and API/server contract Requires clients to use the supported method; cache semantics differ from GET Keeps payload out of the URL, but still requires normal body and authentication protections
Store state server-side and send a short opaque identifier Yes Application storage and lookup logic Short URL; identifier expiry and sharing behavior must be designed Reduces URL leakage but adds storage, authorization and lifecycle concerns
Fix redirect construction Yes Redirecting application, proxy or rewrite rule Restores normal redirect behavior Prevents unbounded URL growth and can remove nested untrusted return values
Increase a request-line or URL limit No; only raises the ceiling Every intermediary with a smaller limit Long URLs may still fail for other clients, proxies or caches Increases parsing, memory and denial-of-service exposure; requires a bounded, reviewed value

Prefer an application or redirect fix when possible. A larger limit is appropriate only when the longer request is intentional, bounded and supported by all clients and intermediaries.

Durable application-level fixes

Compact the query contract

  • Remove unused keys, duplicate parameters and repeated path fragments.
  • Use compact identifiers and pagination tokens rather than embedding full records or repeated labels.
  • Do not serialize large JSON documents, arrays, signed state or form submissions into a GET query string.
  • Set a deliberate maximum for user-selectable filters so a single request cannot grow without bound.

Use a request body for substantial input

When an API operation accepts a body, send the filter or form data with the method and content type defined by that API—commonly POST—instead of encoding it into the URL. This is not a mechanical “change every GET to POST” rule: method semantics, authentication, idempotency, caching and client support must match the operation. The point is to keep substantial state out of the request target.

Pass an opaque handle for large state

If a workflow needs a long-lived saved search, export definition or multi-step state, store that state on the server and put only a short, authorization-checked identifier in the URL. Expire or revoke handles as appropriate, and ensure one user cannot use another user’s identifier.

Stop redirects from appending URLs

Build redirects by replacing the intended destination, not by concatenating the current URL with a new path. Inspect rewrite rules and authentication middleware for nested return parameters. Decode and validate a return destination once, then construct one bounded redirect value. A redirect chain should make measurable progress toward its endpoint; a URL that grows on each hop is a construction defect, not a reason to keep increasing limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Increase the limit when a longer request is genuinely required

Apply the change at the component that rejects the request and at every earlier component whose limit is smaller. Use a bounded value justified by the application’s real request shapes. Larger request lines consume parsing and buffer resources and can weaken protections against resource-exhaustion attacks.

nginx

nginx documents a default client_header_buffer_size of 1k and large_client_header_buffers of 4 × 8k. The request line must fit inside one large buffer; increasing the number of buffers does not allow a request line larger than a single buffer. If it does not fit, nginx returns 414.

    large_client_header_buffers 4 16k;
}

Place the directives in the active http or default-server context as appropriate. nginx notes that server-level values can depend on default-server selection, so verify which virtual-server context parses the request. Reload nginx, confirm the effective configuration, then test through the real proxy chain rather than only against a local upstream.

Apache HTTP Server

Apache’s LimitRequestLine controls the number of bytes accepted for the HTTP request line, including the method, URI and protocol version. Current Apache documentation lists a default of 8,190 bytes.

LimitRequestLine 16380

Set it in the server or virtual-host configuration, reload Apache and test through every proxy. Treat a larger value as a controlled capacity change: Apache documents request limits as protection against abnormal requests and resource-exhaustion attacks.

Microsoft IIS Request Filtering

IIS exposes separate controls for the full incoming URL and the query portion. maxUrl covers the URL, while maxQueryString covers the query string. Microsoft documents these appcmd commands:

appcmd set config /section:requestFiltering /requestLimits.maxUrl:8192
appcmd set config /section:requestFiltering /requestLimits.maxQueryString:4096

IIS commonly records URL-too-large and query-string-too-long denials as 404.14 and 404.15, respectively, rather than returning a literal 414. Use the exact hierarchy supported by the installed IIS version, recycle or reload the affected site, and verify the substatus in the logs.

ASP.NET Core Kestrel

Kestrel documents a default MaxRequestLineSize of 8,192 bytes (8 KB). Requests exceeding it return 414 URI Too Long.

    options.Limits.MaxRequestLineSize = 16 * 1024;

Configure the limit during host setup, restart the application and test the public route. If Kestrel sits behind IIS, nginx, a gateway or a CDN, each upstream limit must also permit the request. Otherwise the upstream component will continue to reject it before Kestrel sees it.

Redirect-loop troubleshooting

Redirect problems deserve a separate check because they can turn a valid short request into an oversized one without any user entering a long URL. Capture the response status and Location header for every hop. Compare:

  • Whether the old path appears inside the new path.
  • Whether the complete previous URL is repeatedly placed in a returnUrl, redirect or similar parameter.
  • Whether the same query key is added again on every hop.
  • Whether a scheme, host, slash or path-rewrite rule alternates between two forms.

Fix the rule or application code that constructs the first incorrect redirect. Increasing request limits only delays the eventual failure and leaves clients making unnecessary requests.

Validate the fix across the whole path

  1. Retest the original method and exact request target, not only a shortened reproduction.
  2. Exercise the public hostname so the CDN, load balancer, proxy, web server and application are all traversed.
  3. Confirm that the redirect chain terminates and that no parameter grows between hops.
  4. Check server and intermediary logs for the actual accepted request-line size and status.
  5. Test a request just below the intended bound and one just above it to verify that the limit is deliberate.
  6. Purge or bypass cached 414 responses, then repeat the test from a clean client.
  7. Monitor memory, latency, rejection counts and security alerts after deployment. A limit increase should not become an uncontrolled allowance for arbitrary request sizes.

Common mistakes

  • Changing upload limits: body-size settings address 413-style failures, not a long request target.
  • Changing only the application: an edge component with a lower ceiling will still reject the request.
  • Counting characters only: transmitted bytes include encoding and request-line syntax.
  • Increasing nginx’s buffer count instead of its per-buffer size: one request line must fit in one large buffer.
  • Assuming every 414 is an original long URL: inspect redirects for growth.
  • Ignoring logs after an IIS 404: 404.14 and 404.15 can represent URL and query-string length denials.
  • Testing through a stale cache: 414 responses can be heuristically cached.
  • Putting sensitive data in the query string: URLs may appear in browser history, access logs, analytics, bookmarks and referrer data; moving the data to a body or server-side state can reduce that exposure, but does not replace authentication or authorization.

When should you use POST instead of a long GET?

Use the method defined by the API or form contract. POST is commonly suitable when the operation submits a substantial filter, form or JSON document in a request body. It avoids putting that payload in the request target and is usually more portable across intermediaries than endlessly increasing URL limits. Do not change a read-only GET solely to hide a few short parameters: consider cacheability, bookmarking, idempotency, retries and the clients that consume the endpoint. For genuinely large or sensitive state, a body or a server-side handle is preferable to an ever-growing query string.

Key facts to remember

  • 414 is specifically a request-target length rejection, not a generic outage.
  • The smallest limit anywhere in the client-to-application path wins.
  • Oversized GET state and redirect growth are the first causes to investigate.
  • nginx, Apache, IIS and Kestrel expose different settings and defaults.
  • Moving substantial input into an appropriate request body usually works across more deployments than repeatedly raising URL ceilings.
  • After either an application fix or a limit change, test every intermediary and clear cached error responses.
